ORAS OU ORAS OU First Team

Hey, this is for the most part my first OU team. I've been playing it in battlespot and winning against most. Wondering what my main weaknesses are and what to watch out for. I also actually haven't used gengar yet and really just built him off the ou smogon build, dont really understand how to play him and what to switch him into against. I do feel however that he fits on the team and makes it harder for opponents to predict what pokemon I'll choose. Let me know what you think!
______________________________________________________________________________
Charizard X

ZarditeX |Blaze
Jolly | Att 252 Spe 252
Dragon Claw | Flare Blitz | Roost| Dragon Dance

-My sweeper. Has Dragon Dance, takes out other dragons, Strong stab moves against many things Via Flare Blitz and Dragon Claw. Also just is super cool. Runs roost to outlive many threats, especially if dragondancing and abusing roost pre megaevolution to avoid enemy dragon coverage.

Gallade

Galladite | Justified
Jolly | Att 252 Spe 252
Protect | Close Combat | Zen headbutt | Rock Slide

-2nd mega option. Has coverage over dark/fighting/normal/poison/bug/rock/flying/grass. Close combat 1HKO’s most dark, deals with mega blaziken and other fighting/normal megas. Rock slide deals with things such as zapdos, mega altaria, talonflame and other flyers. A good option to deal with levitate users that want to avoid garchomps earthquake (or if garchomp is dead already, since he does run stone edge to deal with flyers).

Garchomp

Life Orb | Rough Skin
Naive | Att 252 Spe 252
Outrage | Stealth Rock | Stone Edge | Earthquake

-Run Naïve + speed Iv’s to pretty much always guarantee going first. Super solid, usually has an coverage move to do massive damage to whatever the opponent sends out with Stone Edge/Earthquake/Outrage. I almost always start with him and have run through entire teams with him more than once. I have stealth rock on him, but find it useless most of the time. Looking for another very strong coverage move to possibly replace with.

Serperior

Light Clay | Contary
Timid | SpD 126 Def 126 Spe 252
Glare | Light Screen| Reflect | Leaf Storm

-I have him as a strong grass tank to deal with things that can kill my zard X. He is one of my checks for opposing counters like most water pokemon. Even useful against things like mega lucario they might be running. Glare is super useful against things that can outspeed my zard X. I was also running him to deal with primal groudon in battle spot. Also has reflect/light screen team support along with glare.

Gengar

Black Sludge | Levitate
Timid | SpA 252 Spe 252
Will-O-Wisp | Taunt | Substitute | Hex

-Feel his ghost and speed typing throw people off a bit. Might change their picks to be less physical. Also makes it harder to predict what I will pick because makes it difficult to see a main team theme that can be countered. He is running taunt and will-o-wisp , substitute for countering physical walls or something, but don’t fully understand usage. Lack of experience for usage is a problem here, but my intuition feels like he is a solid fit though.

Azumarill

Assault Vest | Huge Power
Adamant | Att 252 SpD 252
Knock Off | Waterfall | Aqua Jet | Play Rough

-Solid coverage with water and Fairy typing. Also has some defense against things like Rotom W with assault Vest. Can use things like play rough and knock off to defeat other waters or things that could potentially counter Zard X. Can deal with tank dragon dancers/swords dance that Zard X or Gallade/Garchomp fail to kill before fainting.

Hey Varem, nice team you have here but I think that some improvements could be made.
First off I saw you had a normal Gallade (well just 2 mega stones), and its honestly not very good in the OU meta it doesn't hit very hard and its speed isn't very good either. So I'm gonna suggest that you replace Gallade with Scarf Hoopa-Unbound, this gives you a scarfer that hits hard and still covers all of the types that you mentioned above.

Next I really like the idea of Life Orb Lead Garchomp, it's a really great rocker since everyone expects rocky helmet chomp but I think the set could be changed up a little bit, first off I would replace Outrage with Draco Meteor because it catches so many things off guard like Hippos, Landos, opposing Chomps and other stuff as well you also don't get locked in to it. Next move I would change is stone edge, while hitting flying types for super effective damage I think that hitting steel types that shrug off EQ is even better so I would replace Stone Edge with Fire Blast. Lastly I would give Garchomp an EV spread of of 252 Spa / 4 Atk / 252 Spe, this allows you to really take advantage of Draco and Fire Blast.

Next thing I noticed was the Serperior set and EV's, while the set seems very interesting I think that you should go with Dragon Pulse instead of Reflect, this allows you to hit dragons for super effective damage which is always nice. I would also go with Hidden Power Ground or Hidden Power Fire instead of Light Screen, HP ground primarily is for Heatran and weakening it or killing it can give Zard-X an easier time and HP Fire is for steals which allows Serp to kill most of its counters. I would also change its item to Miracle Seed, Life Orb or Lum Berry all 3 are great options on it and give it an EV spread of 252 Spa / 252 Spe / 4 Def

Last change I would go with is Choice Band Azumarill instead of AV, while AV Azu is a good set I feel like your team just appreciates band Azu's power it fits much better overall on this team since you aren't really weak to any water types or anything that AV Azu checks. That's all I got, hope I help!

Hey Varem, welcome to smogon and good effort at teambuliding in a competitive OU environment.

As Scald previously implied in his rate, two mega stones coupled on the same team is generally a bad idea since one of the two will essentially be lacking an item once the other mega evolves. If you so chose to mega evolve with Gallade for instance, Charizard would be forced to maintain in regular form which is completely unviable in the overused metagame. Scarf hoopa that scald suggested is solid but you may also opt to go with Banded Scizor to reliably check mega Altaria which currently does serious serious damage to your team.

Ahh, interesting. I will definitely be changing my Serperior, I like the build you suggest a lot. Unfortunately as a personal choice I can't take Hoopa however because I don't use legendary pokemon, but I will try out the scizor replacement that Dark mentioned below. I like my garchomp where's he at and found a lot of success with him currently, so I'll keep your build in mind if I start to run into trouble, but for now I'll see if its success continues. I'm wondering if there is something I could take instead of Azumarill. Like a utility pokemon or something that has a Stab move? I kind of feel at the moment that he is not doing much for my team.

I think I will be taking you up on the Scizor idea, although I don't like choice items at all. I think I'll just go for stronger bug STAB move i.e. bug bite and run maybe a focus sash. Also potentially night slash>pursuit? Thoughts on that? Thanks

Full Battle Anecdote ----> That's funny you mention the mega Altaria. I actually just had a very close battle with a girl from Germany that ran Azumarill/Mega Altaria/Absol. I ran Garchomp/Zard X/Gallade. Garchomp turn 1 got azumarill with an eq down to red hp, azumarill hit back with play rough. Garchomp survived with red health and rough skin took the azumarill to like 2 hp. Unfortunately i didnt trust me gut here and used eq again instead of stone edge, they switched to Mega Altaria. Surprisingly I used Outrage on Mega-Altaria to not work because Fairy/Dragon typing?!? lol. I will admit I did not see that coming, it ice beamed garchomp. I brought out Zard X, used typing advantage of not mega evolving and got 2 DD's off with a roost eating 2 ice beams and a moonblast resulting in green health. I thought that would be enough....Mega Altaria's are crazy. I flare blitz'd and it survived in red health and killed me with moonblast. Lol. Anyways I swept the entire team with gallade via rock slide onto Mega Altaria, then rock slide on Azumarill and 1HKO absol with close combat. But yea, i just thought it was extremely funny you mentioned that specific weakness after I had that crazy battle earlier.

First thing is first, find a mega that fits what you want in a team. Is it HO or is it bulky offensive. Then you want to find pokes that suit your mega around what you want. Gallade has a flying and fairy weakness. These two weaknesses are superfluous in OU. Therefore, covering your weaknesses is the first priority.

Gallade Galladite
Ability: Steadfast → Inner Focus
Evs: 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 SpDef
Jolly
-Ice Punch
-Poison Jab
-Close Combat
-Protect

This moveset covers 10 of 17 types. Ice Punch for those Dragons and Flying types, Poison Jab for those Fairies and opposing serperiors, Close Combat needs no explanation and protect for a safe mega. Altaria is an aforementioned problem so you replace Garchomp with

Skarmory @Leftovers/Custap Berry
Ability: Sturdy
EV's 252 Hp/ 252 Def/ 4 SpDef
Impish
-Stealth Rock
-Brave Bird
-Spikes
-Whirlwind/Steel Wing/Filler

This Skarmory move set guarantees rocks and if you want to keep it, checks Altaria well. If you want another hazard and a free switch, Custap, get up spikes, Sacrifice Skarmory and make a switch. This, however isn't an answer for Altaria or Fairies. This is when you pick up what you want that checks Altaria in which Dark is right about Banded Scizor. Now with a Fire weakness, I suggest you pick up either Gyarados, or pick up a qualifying water type sweeper.

Azumarill Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EV's: 252 Hp/252 Atk/ 4 SpDef
Adamant
-Aqua Jet
-Waterfall/Aqua Tail
-Play Rough
-Superpower

That was my two cents and make necessary changes to your team, not to the OU tier. What I mean is make your team unique with a winning formula. I went 16-3 with a team with Cradily on it.
