Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
This thread will serve for general discussions about the tier's metagame so feel free to talk about anything you want as long as it is related to ORAS RU!
Aerodactly Spikes HO - - another team i really like. Aerodactyl HO is just really good. Can also run taunt here on 1-2 mons. I like running drain punch > cc on gallade to make it harder to revenge (e.g. flygon outrage doesnt kill into dpunch kills after rocks and recovers a ton)
I think like for samples, at least:
1 Camel team (honestly we can keep the current camel sample team by Aldo)
1 Fletch team
1 Aero HO
1 Uxie HO
1 Stall
At least 1 Virizion team
At least 1 Scrafty team
From Piyu's post:
This team showcases a good reigvenu build in an offensive way w/ scrafty + spikes and is very standard
From pastes shared in the discord:
Lighthouses - - like the most standard 6 ever
Lighthouses - - a pretty standard/good fletch
Real FV13 - - growth venu + np slowking is pretty standard now and i like this
https://pokepast.es/b9cf8859a0703628
my variation on the standard formula, people have made many variations of this in the past with movesets and whatnot like running waterfall on alo for camerupt and some other stuff but this is how i like to run it atm
https://pokepast.es/8f20e484c4dec0c0
diancie slowking flygon steel type is extremely standard and one of the best archetypes to use in the tier, similar teams with magneton over escavalier have been used as well and also work well
https://pokepast.es/f1ab6452c2fd857c
psychic type attacker/setup sweeper + omastar or barb is the most standard and straight foward form of HO in this tier, made this team for evi to use in rupl semis
https://pokepast.es/06d6d66ed908c8bc
my personal fav team, i used to get memed on back in the day for being the only person to use jolteon and i believe the best way to use it is alongside additional ways of pressuring and removing opp flygon, its usually the only ground type on peoples teams and specs volt switch is immense pressure. running hp water on jolteon is a valid edit
https://pokepast.es/f8612daa90936a77
my most reliable team as the title suggests, fletch is really good and underused in this tier, willo is op and so is non trapper non choice magneton as it doesnt get abused by deffensive teams clicking protect, volt can be used in place of subs
https://pokepast.es/419c19a62f8d2d9d
my take on camerupt i made for rugl, my fav way to use it atm but can be a bit funky. i think alo + camerupt is bait personally and granbull without alo definitely is but i kinda make up for it by making it offensive
i have more stuff but all more for fun in a way and gimmicky that i decided to not share(bait people into losing games) hf if you wanna try oras!!!

I've realized that Rindo is necessary on Slowking to make the Virizion matchup (and misc. mons like Leaf Blade Gallade and Delphox) manageable. You need double Heal Bell on this stall, otherwise you'll be out of status healing in the Registeel mu, as you need all 8 to PP stall Toxic. However, without Dazzling Gleam on Audino, both Gallade and Medicham become much worse matchups. You can't drop Knock either, since it's mandatory for Sigilyph and Hoopa. Taunt Golbat does help because then you don't need to PP stall Registeel out of Stealth Rock (hence you can save Heal Bell PP on Articuno), but without Toxic, Jellicent outright wins. Neither is Xatu over Golbat a solution, as your matchup is worsened against Venusaur and Scrafty.
This stall is very much a matchup fish (even if it's a successful one), no matter what techs you choose.
Moving my post-RUPL post from last year to the discussion thread as requested.

I had a lot of fun playing and building ORAS this RUPL so I decided to make a post with the teams I used and share some personal thoughts about the tier right now. I'm not very good at explaining my building thought process so I'll just post the teams but feel free to ask me about anything that sparks your interest!
I didn't build the team I used in week 2 so I haven't included a link for that and week 7 I played SM but everything else was built by myself. I'll just talk a bit about my week 5 team I used vs. atomicllamas because that is by far my favorite team I used. I always thought Accelgor was pretty underrated but I really didn't like the sets people were using on it, Specs seemed very promising. The original core I had was Accelgor + Specs Magneton + Eject Button Slowking/Alomomola; the entire team ended up being fairly offensive-ish so Eject Button was to give me one of Accelgor or Magneton an extra opportunity to come in safely. Then etern gave me the idea of pairing Xatu with it so I could volt on Regi into it to scout EQ + deny rocks which sounded great so I slapped that, ultimately ended up with Mola > Slowking so Band Flygon didn't maul me and Healing Wish felt like a great fit on this for late-game Virizion/Accelgor action. Accelgor is also faster than +1 Scrafty which is super cool and I had Modest on this for the extra power because we weren't expecting Aero/Jolteon but Timid is probably better in general.

Some general thoughts on the tier —
I think the balance/fat teams structures are the best in the tier at the moment and will continue to be so, the tier has a lot of great defensive staples for them to not be good and having a great wish passer is perfect too. Although, hot take but I think Venusaur is a bit overrated? I only used it twice in the whole tour and my teams turned out just fine; it's a great Pokemon and needs to be accounted for at all times but I don't think its as metagame-warping as people make it seem. The Sludge Bomb sets with no Giga Drain can be taken advantage of by a bunch of Pokemon too which is a bit annoying.
All the megas (bar Glalie maybe) are underrated and need to be used more. Mega Camel in particular is amazing and offers a lot of defensive utility as well if you pair it with the right partners and sets; 3 atks + Rest or 2 atks + Rest Talk or no Rest with wish support are all perfectly valid and are great in different ways depending on the rest of the team. Having Rest and being able to switch in to Venusaur/Registeel etc. without worrying about status is always nice. Mega Banette and Audino also have their uses on the right teams.
Pokemon like Escavalier and Braviary are kinda underrated too now imo and they capitalise on balance/fat being good although just simple changes like Thunderbolt on Registeel makes them easier to deal with. Escavalier is a bit harder because of its really good defensive typing and stats in general but the reliance on Rest and slow speed can hold it back sometimes. Nonetheless, cool mons that should be used more.
Same with Jellicent, very underrated; Jellicent was used only 8 times the whole tour which is a bit wild but I never used it either so who am I to judge... although, competition with Slowking and Alomomola as defensive Water-types is a bit annoying sometimes. Taunt/WoW/Scald/Hex are all great and can annoy some teams, I had nascar Molas on some of my teams just so I didn't get completely bodied by lead Jellicent. Unsure what to make of Slowking, tried to use it on a bunch of teams but always ended up with different variations without it that felt better; maybe I'm just building wrong with it. Competition with Alomomola as a regen Water-type is annoying too and given my high Mola usage, it probably had a hard time finding its way onto most of my teams.
Flygon is by far the most splashable Pokemon in the tier and fits on all kinds of teams although not sure if I'd call it the best Pokemon in the tier. But still very good and customizable depending on what the team needs. On another note, my thoughts about Scrafty from this post are still the same as well.
There are some other Pokemon that I think could be cool but never got a chance to or couldn't come up with a team that I liked with them: Clawitzer, Emboar, Mantine, Hitmonchan, and Aurorus are some of them at the top of my head but probably more that I'm forgetting. I've also put together some other teams I made but didn't end up using either because I didn't like how they turned out or they didn't feel great in tests but could probably be good with some tweaks: https://pokepast.es/991662a02cee6788
Overall I had fun playing this tier after I randomly had an urge to lock myself to and play ORAS this tour. Big shout-out to everyone on the Hustlers (SantuBeraldoMetallica and others ) that were constantly talking in my channel and keeping things going and making sure I wasn't going too outlandish with my ideas sometimes like my week 1 Mega Glalie + Mega Banette team....
Post RUCL set dump
Had lots of fun this RUCL, particularly the weeks where I could dedicate some time to building. I was out of commission for 3 weeks due to busy irl, so I didn't really load that many unique teams. Instead, I'll post a set dump of some cool sets I loaded or was experimenting with.
I wanted to experiment with different steel types other than Registeel. Bronzong has a severe 4MSS issue. EQ is nice for Registeel, Skill Swap is nice for Xatu, and Protect is really nice too. But I think these 4 moves are mandatory tbh.
The problem with Bronzong instead of Registeel is that its not bulky enough to ward off offensive mons as most of the threats 2HKO it and it doesn't do much back, especially without twave. Toxic is too slow without protect. Enter this set, which makes it significantly less passive which prevents pokemon from setting up on it. This set is my go to nowadays on medium tempo teams that dont use wish or heal bell
248 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. -1 0 HP / 0 SpD Barbaracle: 180-213 (63.1 - 74.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
248 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. -1 0 HP / 4 SpD Omastar: 211-249 (75 - 88.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
248 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. 152 HP / 0 SpD Fletchinder: 178-210 (58.7 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
248 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. 248 HP / 16 SpD Venusaur: 206-246 (56.7 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
248 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. 252 HP / 168+ SpD Braviary: 100-118 (24.7 - 29.2%) -- possible 5HKO
@ Black Sludge
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Atk / 96 SpD / 136 Spe
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Synthesis
- Knock Off
- Power Whip
SD Venu is nothing new, but it usually goes with EQ which is better usually, but in the team I brought to finals I found Knock Off surprisingly better. Taking advantage of Venusaur's SpD, being able to take a hit from Sigilyph from full and KO back is huge. Knock Off in general is a great neutral option that is great and can hit weird pokemon like Bronzong.
@ Black Sludge
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 24 SpA / 16 SpD / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Roar
- Synthesis
- Sludge Bomb
- Knock Off / Giga Drain
Finding a scrafty answer is really hard. It's especially disheartening to run Diancie as your scrafty answer only to lose to Iron Head. Roar Venusaur is a decent bandaid to a team that doesn't have solid switchins to Scrafty but is not too passive to let it up set up all the time. It is also particulary nice since Venusaur switchins often end up being fire/fyling/ice types and roar is really nice if rocks are up.
@ Choice Specs
Ability: Sticky Hold
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature - Spikes / Encore
- Energy Ball
- Bug Buzz - U-turn
I think Accelgor is extremely underrated. A super fast threat that hits hard can be quite difficult to handle and a great end game sweeper. So fast it outspeeds everything +0 and even some scarfers like Magneton, Emboar, and Medicham. The traditional thing is you usually go Focus Blast and HP Ground or Water, but I'm really not a huge fan of hitting Focus Blast, especially against a Registeel. I'm more fond of U-turn and bringing a threat instead. This is particularly nice on Accelgor as it forces many switchins.
Spikes is not new as a 4th on Specs, I think it's great to take advantage of the Registeel switch. However on high tempo teams I find myself greatly enjoying Encore 4th for pinch situations like DD Scrafty or SD Virizion which tend to be hard to revenge kill.
Clawitzer is another underrated mon. Like Accelgor, I value momentum quite a bit and with these mons that force switches, doubling down on that momentum advantage can be really great. I don't think Specs is its strong point, as often times the opponent likes to bank on being locked into the wrong move (e.g. Dark Pulse on Diancie or water move on Venusaur). Also, Clawitzer is one point faster than Scrafty which is honestly huge. Water Pulse 2HKOs DD Scrafty which is why its my preferred option. U-turn is being slotted over Aura Sphere but I think Aura Sphere is actually great for Scrafty, it just depends on the team.
Timid Wise Glasses instead of Modest Specs does mean Alomomola is not 2HKO anymore, but between hazards, status, and flinch chances, it's much easier to get past it in practice, especially if you go Scald route for burns.
