Original Black Sabbath line up reunion and new studio album in 2012.

We have a metal thread already, but I figure this deserves its own discussion.

  • Original Black Sabbath line up will release a new studio album in 2012
  • Rick Rubin will be producing the new 2012 studio album.
  • Black Sabbath will be headlining 2012's Download Festival.
  • A full world tour is to follow

I'm not really convinced that this will be good. More often than not, when bands get back together well out of their prime, it's not really that good.

Heaven & Hell turned out pretty damn good live, so I will disagree on that point. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward can still play, Ozzy Osbourne... well, check out his recent 2010-2011 Black Sabbath covers. Scream was your usual Ozzy Osbourne solo same old rehash trash that he has been doing post-Bark at the Moon, it did have "some" decent stuff on it like the "Let Me Hear You Scream". I actually enjoyed the song he did vocals on for Slash's self-titled album, "Crucify the Dead". I'll be the first to say that I LOATHE Slash.

When Osbourne is backed by good musicians he can make something listenable, the problem is that for the vast majority of his solo career Ozzy wants to stick to the same rehashed boring pop metal. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward are still phenomenal musicians on their instruments. As long as Tony is writing all the music and Geezer is writing all the lyrics again the new album has some potential. I'm just excited that the original line up is even recording a new studio album at all, it surely can not be worse than Never Say Die!, but it very likely will not be better than The Devil You Know.

Leave it to Rick Rubin to "come to the rescue." We'll see how this turns out, because they very well could have been out of the game too long.

The last three "metal" albums Rubin produced were awfully produced, and too add insult to injury Christ Illusion, Death Magnetic, and World Painted Blood were pretty awful. Those albums contained your typical modern "Hey let's boost the volume up as high as possible and leave out any uncompressed sound!" production. It's a shame because Rick Rubin was known for his clean sound once upon a time. Ex: Trouble - Trouble

Out of the game too long? Heaven & Hell was essentially the Dio Black Sabbath line up, The Devil You Know sounded real average but it wasn't a bad album. It did have some gems like "Bible Black". Too add, the solo project Tony Iommi did back in 2005 with Glenn Hughes titled Fused was a pretty damn cool album. I have faith in this as long as Tony Iommi is at the helm of the writing (which I assume he is).
