Moves

Hyperspace Fury is Hoopa-U's primary STAB move, smashing through bulky Psychic-types like Slowbro, Cresselia, and Reuniclus as well as nabbing a 2HKO on neutral targets such as Skarmory. Zen Headbutt punishes Fighting-types such as Kommo-o on the switch and threatens Toxapex with an OHKO while also being a safe neutral option to cover Fairy-types. Ice Punch smashes Landorus-T, even after an Intimidate, and threatens out Gliscor after Hoopa-U is revealed to be faster. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-types that resist Hyperspace Fury like Tapu Fini, Clefable, Tapu Koko, and Tapu Bulu. Fire Punch lets Hoopa-U hit targets such as Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Magearna, and Mega Mawile for super effective damage. Finally, Drain Punch can be used to hit Tyranitar, which resists Hoopa-U's other moves, and allows Hoopa-U to heal off residual damage.
Set Details
========
An Adamant nature is preferred to maximize Hoopa-U's damage output, while a Jolly nature is an option to outspeed Timid Heatran. Alternatively, Hoopa-U can run 32 HP EVs to always survive 2 Focus Blasts from Mega Alakazam at full health.
Usage Tips
========
Due to Hoopa-U's poor Defense stat, it can find difficulty switching in safely, especially against physical attackers. Therefore, the best scenarios to bring Hoopa-U in safely are through aggressive switches, getting assistance from Volt Switch and U-turn, and after a teammate is KOed. Since this set relies on physical attacks instead of special attacks, Hoopa-U can't switch into Scald from the likes of Toxapex and Slowbro because its damage output will be reduced if it gets burned. Hyperspace Fury is Hoopa-U's most spammable move due to it being the most immediate STAB option. If Hoopa-U is facing a Pokemon that it can easily force out it can use its coverage moves for predicted switch-ins, such as using Gunk Shot as Tapu Fini comes in expecting Hyperspace Fury. Be careful not to lock into Hyperspace Fury or Zen Headbutt if the opposing team has a Tyranitar or Weavile because they can punish Hoopa-U with Pursuit thanks to its poor Defense stat, the Defense drop from Hyperspace Fury, and their immunity to Zen Headbutt. Hoopa-U must also be wary of U-turn from faster Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Gliscor; even without any Attack investment, they can still OHKO it with U-turn thanks to its typing and poor Defense stat, and if it switches out, they can find easy opportunities to bring in a Pokemon that can threaten its teammates.
Team Options
========
Choice Band Hoopa-U shines best on bulky offense teams, where it is tasked with punching holes for faster cleaners and appreciates the free entry provided by its pivoting teammates. Prominent examples of such teammates are Mega Scizor, Landorus-T, Magearna, and Tapu Koko, as they can bring Hoopa-U in safely with U-turn and Volt Switch. Magearna can also use its typing to check Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Weavile. Heatran sets up Stealth Rock and checks Fairy-types that can revenge kill Hoopa-U, such as Tapu Lele. Since Hoopa-U is very vulnerable to U-turn and Volt Switch, partners such as Zapdos and Rocky Helmet Landorus-T are also appreciated, as they can punish U-turn with Static and chip damage, respectively, and in the case of Landorus-T, block Volt Switch with its typing. Tapu Fini provides support with Misty Terrain, allowing Hoopa-U to switch into Scald without the risk of getting burned. Mega Lopunny is also a great partner, as it appreciates Hoopa-U handling bulkier Pokemon that it struggles with such as Clefable, Slowbro, and Cresselia. In return, Mega Lopunny deals with fast-paced teams, which can give Hoopa-U a lot of trouble. Choice Scarf Kartana is a strong cleaning option that benefits from Hoopa-U breaking through opposing physical walls like Landorus-T, Zapdos, and Skarmory. Tapu Lele can provide Psychic Terrain to block priority moves like Mega Mawile's Sucker Punch and Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch and boost the power of Zen Headbutt. Entry hazard removal is also appreciated, so Hoopa-U enjoys pairing with Rapid Spin Excadrill and Defoggers like Gliscor, Zapdos, and Rotom-W. The latter two can also bring Hoopa-U in safely via Volt Switch, while Gliscor blocks Volt Switch thanks to its typing.
