Rock Slide threatens boosted sweepers like Mega Charizard X and Volcarona. U-turn provides strong wallbreakers like Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile with safe entry and forces out Mega Alakazam and Ash-Greninja, allowing Greninja to chain momentum off of forced switches and mitigate the momentum loss from being Choice-locked. Ice Beam threatens clean OHKOs on the likes of Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp that otherwise wall Choice Scarf Greninja. Gunk Shot is Greninja's strongest neutral coverage option and smashes Fairy-types like Clefable, Tapu Fini, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Koko. Greninja can take advantage of Pokemon that it scares out, like the aforementioned Ground-types, to set up Spikes. Finally, Waterfall lets Greninja threaten Ground- and Fire-types like Landorus-T, Gliscor, Heatran, and Victini with one moveslot.

Set Details
========

The given Special Attack investment allows Greninja to OHKO Kartana with Ice Beam, while the rest of its EVs are dumped into Speed and Attack. A Hasty nature is preferred over Naive to enable Greninja to handle Ash-Greninja and Magma Storm Heatran more easily.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Scarf Greninja is best utilized as a fast revenge killer that can threaten unexpected KOs on boosted sweepers like Volcarona and weakened Mega Charizard X. Greninja should use U-turn as much as possible to avoid losing momentum and locking into a move, including against Pokemon that it easily scares out, such as Gliscor. However, this can be risky if the opponent has contact punishers like Ferrothorn, Rocky Helmet users like Skarmory, and especially Zapdos on their team, as Greninja will get punished with chip damage and, in Zapdos's case, paralysis from Static. Greninja should only use Spikes for risky predictions if it struggles to make progress, especially against bulkier teams. It is at its most unpredictable if it is used earlier in the game before its set is revealed, so make the most of its unpredictability early-game with pivot support via Volt Switch and U-turn or aggressive double switches. However, once the opponent figures out that Greninja has a Choice Scarf, it will become easier to play around due to its inability to switch between moves.

Team Options
========

This Greninja set functions best on teams ranging from offense to bulky offense that enjoy its capabilities as a revenge killer and the momentum it provides with a fast U-turn. Strong wallbreakers like Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham love the free entry that it provides with U-turn. Mega Lopunny is a great partner for similar reasons and can put sweepers like Mega Swampert, Mega Charizard X, Gyarados, and Dragonite in KO range for Greninja with Fake Out and Quick Attack. Pivots like Magearna, Tapu Koko, Landorus-T, and Tornadus-T complement Greninja beautifully, as they provide it free entry with Volt Switch and U-turn while continuing to chain momentum. Heatran provides Stealth Rock support and is a solid answer to Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Magearna. Swords Dance variants of Kartana, especially those with Fightinium Z, benefit from Greninja removing Fire-types like Volcarona and Mega Charizard X, and they put heavy pressure on Magearna. Ferrothorn appreciates Greninja stopping the aforementioned Fire-type sweepers from winning on the spot if they nab a free setup opportunity, and it sets up Spikes, pressuring the likes of Magearna and opposing Ferrothorn while allowing Greninja room to run Gunk Shot. Kommo-o appreciates Greninja luring in and removing Mega Alakazam and Tapu Fini with U-turn and Gunk Shot, and the free switches provided allow it opportunities to set up with Dragon Dance or Clangorous Soulblaze. Additionally, Kommo-o pressures and forces chip damage on Toxapex with Taunt, especially with the Spikes support that Greninja provides.

Rock Slide threatens boosted sweepers like Mega Charizard X and Volcarona with an unexpected KO 176 Atk Protean Greninja Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Charizard-Mega-X: 168-200 (56.5 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO -- Using just "KO" here is misleading. . U-turn provides strong wallbreakers like Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile with a safe entry it's also a way to chase out stuff like zam and ashgren and safely chain momentum off of that to mitigate the momentum loss from being choice locked. Ice Beam threatens a clean OHKO on the likes of Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp could mention that these mons otherwise wall it. Gunk Shot smashes Fairy-types like Clefable, Tapu Fini, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Koko. can also mention its grens strongest neutral option Finally, Greninja can take advantage of Pokemon that it scares out, like the aforementioned Ground-types, to set up Spikes.

do you think waterfall deserves to be mentioned here? it compresses grounds, heatran, and volcarona. just curious what you think

One of the best things about Choice Scarf Greninja is the surprise factor that it
brings, thanks to its high Speed stat, amazing coverage, Spikes, and U-turn. the surprise factor is due to it being relatively uncommon and seemingly counterintuitive due to already being pretty fast. i wouldn't even say it has that much surprise factor since you can mostly tell when its coming, so i really dont know about this opening sentence Therefore, it is best utilized as a fast revenge killer that can threaten unexpected KOs on boosted sweepers like Mega Charizard X and Volcarona. i think the unexpected part sort of cheapens gren. it doesnt need to have surprise for its emergency checking to be useful. If Greninja is facing a Pokemon that can easily scare out, it can use the opportunity to bring a teammate in with U-turn, set up Spikes, or use a coverage move against a predicted switch-in, such as using Gunk Shot against Tapu Fini expecting Ice Beam last part is typically impractical. this sentence should probably just say that you should use u turn mostly to avoid (conjoin with green sentence). Be careful not to use U-turn if the opponent has a Zapdos on their team, as Greninja will potentially get paralyzed, which will leave it deadweight for its team. contact punishers like zapdos and ferrothorn idk how to phrase In this case, it is preferred that Greninja either switches out manually or uses Rock Slide or Ice Beam. Because it is locked into a move after switching in, it cannot switch moves freely and is forced to switch out if the opponent sends in a Pokemon that can take a hit from a move that Greninja is locked into, such as Magearna coming in against Rock Slide. Greninja is at its most unpredictable if it is used earlier in the game before its set is revealed, so make the most of its unpredictability early-game with pivot support via Volt Switch and U-turn or aggressive double switches. However, once the opponent figures out that Greninja has a Choice Scarf, it will become easier to play around due to its inability to switch between moves.

This Greninja set functions best on teams ranging from offense, bulky offense, and balance, which enjoy its capabilities as a revenge killer and the momentum it provides with a fast U-turn. you'd have to show me an example of scarf gren balance, im not familiar. also, one of the main draws of scarf gren on say psyspam is mitigating the horrible rona/zardx mu Strong wallbreakers like Mega Mawile, Mega Medicham, Tapu Lele, and Mega Alakazam love the free entry that Greninja provides with U-turn. Additionally, they also enjoy the Spikes that Greninja lays on the battlefield, making it easier to break past troublesome checks like Magearna and Toxapex. the examples don't match well at all. none of the wallbreakers are incorrect idt but you would probably be better off trimming down/editing the list and finding better examples of what spikes help against Mega Lopunny is a great partner for similar reasons and can aid Greninja in dealing with weather put sweepers like Mega Swampert, and boosted sweepers like Mega Charizard X, Volcarona, Gyarados, and Dragonite into range of Greninja with Fake Out and Quick Attack., all of which can give their teammates a lot of trouble. Pivots like Magearna, Tapu Koko, Landorus-T, and Tornadus-T complement Greninja beautifully, as they provide a free entry with Volt Switch and U-turn and can continue chaining momentum, making up for Greninja's frailty; with Spikes support, they can pressure and overwhelm shared checks like Ferrothorn. Heatran provides Stealth Rock support and is a solid answer to Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and non-Focus Blast Magearna. Greninja also enjoys partnering with Clefable and bulky Psychic-types like Cresselia and Mega Latias, as they can handle Fighting-types like Mega Lopunny and Kommo-o. Additionally, Clefable can lay Stealth Rock, provide Knock Off support to remove items like Leftovers from Ferrothorn, and soak up status moves aimed at Greninja, especially Thunder Wave, as paralysis is detrimental to Greninja's game plan. yea just not sure about scarf gren balance
i dont use this mon a lot but i'll try to suggest some stuff to make up for the removals
-kartana, especially like fightinium z
-ferro to free up spikes + gren can stop fires from winning on the spot if they get a free setup on ferro
-kommo-o? it seems like it benefits from any surprise shenanigans gren can pull against zam or fini but also can help break walls with taunt or benefit from a momentum free turn with DD or something
