With sand becoming a more established playstyle over the last few months, Excadrill has come back into the metagame as the archetype's main form of speed control and entry hazard remover all in one. It can outspeed and threaten common speed demons such as Choice Scarf Enamorus and Booster Energy users like Iron Valiant and Iron Moth. Iron Head's strong neutral hit against Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Rillaboom can be forgone for Rock Slide to hit would-be checks in Zapdos and Moltres. Air Balloon flips its matchup against the aforementioned checks in Landorus-T and Gliscor, lets it take on the likes of Dragonite and Glimmora that run Ground coverage, and makes it sturdier at removing Spikes. Tera Ghost lets it deal with Zamazenta more effectively. As the sand-setting sidekick, Tyranitar can also provide Stealth Rock support or wield a Choice Band to overwhelm shared checks like Zamazenta, Great Tusk, and Corviknight. A Grass-type like Hydrapple or Sinistcha is valuable to check Ogerpon-W and Ground-types like Landorus-T and Gliscor for the sand core; the former takes care of balance teams, while the latter checks Zamazenta, both of which Excadrill struggles with.

Mit Sand als immer etablierterem Spielstil in den letzten Monaten ist Excadrill ins OU-Metagame zurückgekehrt, als zentrale Speed Control-Option und als Entry-Hazard-Remover dieses Archetyps. Es outspeedet und bedroht verbreitete Speed-Monster wie Choice Scarf-Enamorus sowie Booster Energy-Nutzer wie Iron Valiant und Iron Moth. Iron Head trifft zwar Landorus-T, Gliscor und Rillaboom sehr solide neutral, kann jedoch zugunsten von Rock Slide weichen, um potenzielle Checks wie Zapdos und Moltres sicher zu treffen. Ein Air Balloon dreht außerdem das Matchup gegen Landorus-T und Gliscor komplett um, erlaubt Excadrill, sich gegen Pokémon wie Dragonite und Glimmora mit Boden-Coverage zu behaupten und macht es zuverlässiger beim Entfernen von Spikes. Tera Geist hilft Excadrill dabei, deutlich besser gegen Zamazenta zu bestehen. Der Sand-Setzer und Sidekick Tyranitar kann zusätzlich Stealth Rock legen oder mit einem Choice Band gemeinsamen Checks wie Zamazenta, Great Tusk und Corviknight massiven Druck machen. Ein Pflanzen-Typ wie Hydrapple oder Sinistcha ist ebenfalls wertvoll, um Ogerpon-W und Boden-Typen wie Landorus-T und Gliscor für den Sandkern abzufangen. Hydrapple glänzt gegen Balance-Teams, während Sinistcha Zamazenta verlässlich checkt, beides Probleme, die Excadrill allein nur schwer löst.
