Hi guys, my first RMT thread. I was trying to create a team featuring Mega-Absol (as it is my favourite mega) aiming for Top 500 on the ladder.
Almost managed it only off by 1 point and it doesn't seem to go any higher. Currently this team is around high-1500 range I know Absol is not the best mega in the tier. But hey it's really fun to use ! and I would love some suggestions for improvement to support him.
Team members:
Building process
Absol @ Absolite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 12 SpA / 240 Spe
Naive Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast
This is the star of team, can be function as both wall-breaker and late game sweeper. Sucker Punch and knockoff is mandatory. 2HKO the most defensive Slowbro after Spikes/Rock. Usually taking out Physical walls for T-Flame to sweep. I have tried Play Rough / Super Power / Substitute / SD to filled the last two slots but this generally set works better.
Only invested 240 Spe EV to outspeed up to Thundurus-I. I'm debating going for 252 Spe EV to tie with Starmie and Raikou. 12 SpA is just the leftovers EV and happens to make the combination of Knock off and Fire blast 100% chance with absolute-minimum roll to knockout standard Ferrothorn without any hazards. Physically defensive skarmory doesn't enjoy Fire Blast neither.
Ice beam is mainly to caught unsuspecting defensive Landorus-T offguard with a chance to OHKO, Specially defensive Gliscor take up to 90% from Ice Beam, has a chance to OHKO Altaria before mega evolve and doing 50% after.
And no one expected Fire Blast and Ice Beam on the same set.
Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Brave Bird
- Overheat
- Bulk Up
- Roost
Quite a standard Bulk Up Talonflame set, but with Overheat. I'm aware that Flare Blitz generally does more damage and should be a better choice in combination with Bulk Up. But I often find myself in a situation where the opposite team is weaken enough to be sweep by talonflame alone and roost is not the best option to use. I will need to use a fire type move but flare blitz will take me down with them.
I don't know if it's my play style or nature of the team this situation came up far too often. This is also the reason I prefer Bulk Up over Sword Dance.
For example, when the opposite team is left with with Mega-Metagross and Conkeldurr and I'm left with 2HP Talonflame and Absol. This is also the reason I invest 252 Spe with Naughty outspeed up to Base-110 which sometime crucial, scarf Magnezone, Mega-gross and sometime to tie with the Talonflame on the opposite side in case my Landorus-T handles too much pressure.
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
IVs: 29 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Rock Tomb
Ok it's everywhere I know...but I need something to deal with roaming Sand offense, Fighting move, Physical dragons or just Rock type in general as well as act as a pivot. I also need a stealth rock, something to takeout Heatran for Absol and my T-Flame to punch a hole. It also act as Talonflame check. Landorus is still the best answer to my requirement.
29 Spe to out-slow the standard 30-31 EV defensive Lando-T giving me a bit more switch initiative. Rock Tomb take out Zard-Y and T-Flame with better accuracy. As the team is more offensive oriented Rock Tomb can also be use as speed control for DD user (namely mega altaria) such that revenge killing is much easier.
Tentacruel @ Black Sludge
Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic Spikes
- Scald
- Acid Spray
- Rapid Spin
My keldeo switch-in and rapid spinner. While starmie might be a better candidate, tentacruel offer Acid spray which is my main tool against Calm-mind staller (namely Sableeye and CroBro) which Absol and T-Flame can't beat.
EV spread is originally 252 SpD but changed to 252 SpA more on the offensive side to allows me to beat Calm mind Clefable and Mega-Venusaur one on one before it takes me out. T-Spikes is nice to have and can become a niche sometime.
It can be a special hit pivot with a great synergy with Landorus-T too.
Gengar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Wave
- Shadow Ball
- Dazzling Gleam
- Trick
Something that is still a problem with this team is the fairy-type pokemon, tentacruel and defensive Lando-T doesn't have enough immediately threathen them. Mega-Gardevoir and Gallade is also a huge threat. I also need a strong special attacker as well.
I'm debating between Specs and Life orb Gengar which both works with the team.
Specs ensure the OHKO on Mega-Diancie after rocks, 2HKO on mixed amoongus and hippowdon (which surprisingly popular in OU) after leftovers.
Trick also neutralise chansey and other setup mon which often doesn't see it coming, but lost the ability to change its move.
Dazzling gleam is there to 2HKO Bisharp and offensive T-Tar upon switch in to pursuit trap without relying on accuracy check of Focus blast.
Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Grass Knot
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Superpower
There's a lot of time during the building process that I want a scarfer. I don't really know what to use really...but Thundurus-T seems like a nice choice. He stops volt-turn shenanigans while complete the volt-turn on my side. Deal with Starmie, Tornadus-T and bulky water type in general .
His main role is to deal Chip damage to other mon as well as provide some switch initiative while add a bit more coverage on the team.
Deal with common rain team since Turn 2. If they lead Politoed -> Swampert predicting Volt switch, Grass knot OHKO Mega-Swampert.

It is a really fun team to use, I think it relied on player's prediction quite a lot. If there is any room for improvement or suggestion I would love to hear it ! Thanks a lot guys !
