Gen 7 OU Specially Defensive Kommo-o + (Overview + OO + C&C) [QC 0/2] [GP 0/1]

[OVERVIEW]

With its unique typing, well-rounded stats, two solid abilities in Bulletproof and Soundproof, and a wide movepool, Kommo-o presents itself as an incredibly versatile force to be reckoned with in the OU tier, both offensively and defensively. Its solid coverage, utility options, and item selection can be customized to cater to its team's needs, allowing it to fulfill several different roles. Its signature Z-Move, Clangorous Soulblaze, turns Kommo-o into one of the scariest late-game cleaners in the tier, as its one-time use boosts all of its stats, making it a very effective mixed attacker and harder to revenge kill. Alternatively, it can utilize a Dragon Dance set, which boosts for more than one turn and makes room for Kommo-o to run another Z-Crystal. Kommo-o can also utilize Belly Drum and Salac Berry to become a deadly high-risk, high-reward sweeper for hyper offense teams, cleaning up weakened teams or punching holes through opposing teams for its teammates to clean up later in the game. Its Speed stat lets Kommo-o get the jump on Dragonite before a boost and faster Pokemon like Mega Lopunny and Mega Alakazam after a boost. Its unique typing and solid defensive stats allow it to resist priority moves like Sucker Punch and Water Shuriken and serve as a solid answer to Mega Tyranitar, Heatran, and especially Ash-Greninja. Balance and semi-stall teams greatly value Kommo-o's ability to handle the latter, especially if it invests its EVs in special bulk. However, Kommo-o's typing leaves it with a crippling 4x weakness to Fairy, which is everywhere in the tier, as well as attacking types like Ice and Psychic. To make Kommo-o's weakness to Fairy-types worse, they can block Clangorous Soulblaze and potentially prevent it from cleaning up late-game. Additionally, it is outpaced by common Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Mega Alakazam before a boost and Choice Scarf users like Landorus-T, Tapu Lele, and Kartana after a boost. Kommo-o also can't fit all of the coverage and utility it wants into one set; for instance, the Kommonium Z variant has a much harder time against Fairy-types if it doesn't have Poison Jab and can't do much to Steel-types like Skarmory, Mega Mawile, and Mega Scizor without Flamethrower, and specially defensive variants have to pick between Protect to scout the opponent, Rock Slide to handle Volcarona, and Roar to prevent setup sweepers from getting out of hand.

Moves
=========

Kommo-o leverages its unique typing to scare out Ash-Greninja, Excadrill, and Heatran, allowing easy opportunities to set up Stealth Rock. Drain Punch threatens targets like Ash-Greninja, Mega Tyranitar, and Excadrill, and extends Kommo-o's longevity. Close Combat is another Fighting-type option if you want to more immediately threaten Heatran and Chansey with a 2HKO. Protect allows an additional turn of regaining health from Leftovers and helps Kommo-o scout for Choice-locked Pokemon like Tapu Lele and coverage moves that can pick it off like Ice Beam from Protean Greninja and Psychic from Volcarona. Roar phazes out boosted sweepers like Substitute variants of Volcarona and forces Kommo-o's checks to take extra chip damage from entry hazards that it and its teammates have set up. Rock Slide threatens Mega Charizard Y and foils Volcarona attempting to use Kommo-o as setup fodder. Lastly, Toxic punishes checks that attempt to come in and force Kommo-o out, like Tapu Lele, Cresselia, and Slowbro.

Set Details
========

The given Speed investment allows Kommo-o to outspeed Adamant Tyranitar, while the rest of its EVs are dumped into HP and Special Defense. Alternatively, it can drop its Speed EVs to 16 to outspeed Adamant Crawdaunt, allowing it to invest more EVs in bulk. Leftovers is necessary to extend Kommo-o's longevity and negate the chip damage that it takes from Stealth Rock. Soundproof is Kommo-o's preferred ability to avoid being phazed out by Roar, prevent Mega Diancie and Mega Sableye from bouncing Roar back at it, and, most notably, make it immune to Clangorous Soulblaze, preventing Kommonium Z variants of Kommo-o from revenge killing it.

Usage Tips
========

Specially defensive Kommo-o fills a unique role as a Stealth Rock setter that serves as a defensive check to the likes of Ash-Greninja, Mega Tyranitar, and Heatran. Aim to switch Kommo-o into these Pokemon so that it can nab a free opportunity to set up Stealth Rock. Part of Kommo-o's game plan is to stick around to handle these Pokemon, so try to avoid any scenarios that can negate the recovery it gains from Leftovers, like burn, poison, and item removal, as they reduce its longevity, especially if entry hazards are on the field. This situation is worsened if Kommo-o isn't paired with a Wish or Heal Bell user. Early- or mid-game, you can also use the free opportunity to use Toxic to punish Pokemon that attempt to force Kommo-o out like Landorus-T and Tapu Lele. Try to use Protect to scout for Choice-locked Pokemon like Tapu Lele and any coverage moves that can threaten Kommo-o with major damage, such as Ice Beam from Greninja and Psychic from Volcarona, and act accordingly. Avoid trying to set up Stealth Rock and spreading Toxic if the opponent has Mega Diancie or Mega Sableye on their side of the field, as they can bounce both moves back at Kommo-o. Don't be afraid to make aggressive switches if the opponent sends in a Pokemon like Gliscor and Tapu Fini, both of which can force Kommo-o out and find a free opportunity to get rid of Stealth Rock. If Kommo-o doesn't have Rock Slide or Roar, it needs to be mindful of its passivity, as this allows Substitute variants of Volcarona and Dragonite to come in and turn it into setup fodder.

Team Options
========

This Kommo-o variant excels on bulky offense, balance, and semi-stall teams, which appreciate its role compression of a Stealth Rock setter and a dedicated check to Heatran, Volcarona, and Ash-Greninja. Spikes support from Ferrothorn, Skarmory, and Greninja has incredible synergy with Kommo-o, which forms a hazard stacking core with each of them and pressure shared checks like Magearna and Mega Mawile. Additionally, Ferrothorn can use Knock Off to remove important items like Leftovers from Clefable, Celesteela, and Magearna, and its typing pairs well with Kommo-o, letting it handle Fairy- and Psychic-types like Tapu Fini, Tapu Lele, and Mega Alakazam; in return, Kommo-o handles Fire-types that scare Ferrothorn out like Mega Charizard Y, Heatran, and Volcarona. Greninja is another notable case, as Protean variants can eliminate Toxapex and Magearna with Tectonic Rage and Fairy-types like Clefable with Gunk Shot, while Ash-Greninja handles bulky Psychic-types like Cresselia, Slowbro, and Mega Latias. Toxapex absorbs Toxic Spikes and sets up a layer of its own, putting pressure on targets like Slowbro and Tapu Lele. Roar variants of Kommo-o especially enjoy the hazard support these Pokemon provide, as this forces opposing teams to shuffle through and allows Kommo-o to rack up hazard damage over time. Other Steel-types like Celesteela, Mega Scizor, and Magearna pair well with Kommo-o for similar reasons as Ferrothorn and Skarmory. Instead of Spikes support, however, Celesteela sends Mega Alakazam and Tapu Lele packing with Heavy Slam; Mega Scizor can bring Kommo-o in safely with U-turn and take down Cresselia and Mega Latias with Swords Dance; and Magearna brings Kommo-o in with Volt Switch and provides cleric support with Heal Bell, curing any status ailments that Kommo-o may have. Fairy-types like Clefable, Mega Mawile, and Tapu Fini also work well with Kommo-o, handling Dragon-types that chase it out like Dragonite and opposing Kommo-o. Clefable can also provide Wish support to make up for Kommo-o's lack of reliable recovery; Mega Mawile benefits from the hazard support that Kommo-o provides, letting it wallbreak more easily; and Tapu Fini pressures bulky teams with Nature's Madness + Taunt and summons Misty Terrain to protect Kommo-o from status, but keep in mind that Toxic doesn't work on grounded targets while Misty Terrain is active. Pivot support from Zapdos, Rotom-W, Tornadus-T, and Gliscor is also beneficial, as they grant Kommo-o a safe entry with Volt Switch and U-turn. Additionally, all of these Pokemon remove entry hazards with Defog, especially Toxic Spikes, which puts Kommo-o on a timer. Mega Lopunny synergizes well with Kommo-o's Stealth Rock support, letting it more easily revenge kill boosted sweepers like Mega Charizard X, Gyarados, and Dragonite. Mega Charizard X bowls over Steel-types that aren't threatened by anything that specially defensive Kommo-o throws at them like Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Skarmory. Magnezone is another solid teammate, as it traps and removes these Steel-types, taking some pressure off of Kommo-o. Kommo-o also appreciates Weavile and Mega Tyranitar trapping and removing bulky Psychic-types like Cresselia, Mega Latias, and Slowbro, allowing it to more easily fit Rock Slide or Roar into its moveslot.

Other Options
=============

Dragon Dance Kommo-o can utilize other Z-Crystals like Electrium Z with Thunder Punch to smash Toxapex and Tapu Fini, and Dragonium Z with Outrage to allow the highest possible chance to OHKO Slowbro at +1 after Stealth Rock and a layer of Spikes; however, the use of these Z-Moves is very specific, forces Kommo-o to give up other Z-Crystals like Groundium Z, Poisonium Z, and Kommonium Z, and being locked into Outrage leaves it vulnerable to being revenge killed by Fairy-types. Low Kick is an alternative Fighting-type option over Close Combat and Drain Punch, as it has more PP and still lets Kommo-o threaten targets like Mega Tyranitar and Ash-Greninja without dropping its Defense and Special Defense; however, Low Kick is weaker against neutral targets like Rotom-W and super effective targets like Kartana and Chansey. Dragon Tail is an option on specially defensive variants to phaze targets like Gliscor while dealing extra chip damage against them, and it isn't blocked by Soundproof and Magic Bounce. Keep in mind that this forces Kommo-o to give up a more crucial move like Protect and Roar and makes it less effective at scouting its targets or punishing Fairy-types. Swords Dance turns Kommo-o into a dangerous wallbreaker and poses a threat against bulkier structures, but it is slower than other Swords Dance users like Landorus-T, Mega Charizard X, and Kartana, and Kommo-o prefers the omniboost from Clangorous Soulblaze and the Attack and Speed boost from Dragon Dance to more easily clean up offensive structures. Dragon Dance variants can also run Lum Berry to shrug off attempted status ailments like Toxic from Toxapex and Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-W. A physically defensive spread alongside an Impish nature is an option on bulky Kommo-o if its team has trouble against physically attackers like Landorus-T and Mega Swampert.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Kommo-o's crippling Fairy weakness leaves it preyed upon by a large majority of Fairy-types like Clefable, Tapu Fini, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Magearna, and Mega Mawile. However, Magearna and Mega Mawile's partial Steel typing means they are not guaranteed to switch in safely due to the risk of taking major damage from Close Combat, and they need to be wary of Earthquake and Flamethrower. The other Fairy-types, on the other hand, must beware of Poison Jab from the Kommonium Z and Dragon Dance variants. Additionally, all of these Fairy-types can block Clangorous Soulblaze from the Kommonium Z variant and potentially make it waste its Z-Move.

**Psychic-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Cresselia, Slowbro, and Reuniclus are bulky enough to survive Kommo-o's boosted STAB options and retaliate with major damage in return. Additionally, Cresselia and Slowbro can place heavy pressure on it with Future Sight or even cripple it with Thunder Wave or Toxic. However, all of these Pokemon don't appreciate being shut down by Taunt from the Kommonium Z variant, while Cresselia and Slowbro must be wary of Toxic from the specially defensive variant. Kommo-o must also watch out for Pokemon that can overcome it with Psychic, like Manaphy and Psychium Z variants of Volcarona.

**Ice-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Weavile and Kyurem-B outpace an unboosted Kommo-o and force it out with their super effective STAB moves. Additionally, Ice Beam from Protean Greninja and Mega Latias also threatens to pick off Kommo-o.

**Dragon-types**: Mega Charizard X, Garchomp, and a boosted Dragonite outpace an unboosted Kommo-o and strike back with their super effective STAB options. Mega Altaria deserves a mention due to its Dragon immunity and Fighting resistance, and targets Kommo-o's Fairy weakness with a Pixilate-boosted Body Slam or Hyper Voice.

**Faster Revenge Killers and Priority**: Mega Alakazam and Tornadus-T outrun Kommo-o before a boost, while Unburden Hawlucha and Choice Scarf users like Landorus-T, Kartana, and Tapu Lele outpace a boosted Kommo-o and strike back with heavy damage. However, Landorus-T and Kartana can only pick Kommo-o off if it is either at low HP or drops its Defense stat with Clanging Scales or Close Combat. Additionally, priority users like Mega Medicham, Mega Lopunny, Mega Pinsir, and Weavile can come in and pick off a weakened Kommo-o.

**Status**: Kommo-o despises all forms of status ailments, especially Toxic from Pokemon like Toxapex, Seismitoad, and Gastrodon, as it can render specially defensive Kommo-o useless and put even offensive variants on a timer. While none of these Pokemon enjoy being shut down by Taunt from the Kommonium Z variant, they can also cripple it with Scald. If Kommo-o lacks Taunt and isn't running Substitute, Rotom-W can also threaten it with Will-O-Wisp.
