Good evening everyone, Rosenfeldius here. I previously only had experience in gen V OU doubles, and as such, my transition to gen 6 OU singles was not a smooth one. After much dicking around with new pokemon, mega evolutions, items, etc., and after many losses, I finally came up with what I believe to be my best team yet, and would very much like thoughts/opinions on improvements/possible alternatives. The main focus of this team is to be able to switch into almost any threat and hit back, hard, and possibly set up some entry hazards. And here they are:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 248 SDef / 8 Spd
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Roar
Your typical specially defensive Heatran here, nothing is special because nothing needs to be. Heatran's main function is to switch into threats to Roserade, being immune and benefited by fire attacks and tanking all psychic ones, and using this opportunity to set up stealth rock as they switch out into a threat to Heatran, such as Rotom-W, Gastrodon, or Gliscor (among others), which I have planned out with the rest of my team. Roar is there of course to get rid of any attempted stat boosters that could be pesky later on.
Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 144 Def / 248 HP / 4 SAtk / 112 SDef
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Recover
One of my main switch-ins to Heatran (and vice-versa,) Gastrodon gets a boost from all water attacks that threaten Heatran and is the perfect Rotom-W staller, immune to his standard set and forcing him to switch out. I opted for a more balanced Gastrodon defensively than just specially, since I wouldn't always get the opportunity to be up against only special attackers. And, when grass-types such as Venusaur try to slaughter him, I can switch into Heatran again. They are one of the best pairs out there, in my opinion. But now let's get on to how one deals with other Heatran threats such as the more-popular than ever Azumarill, mega Blastoise, Rotom-W, etc., presenting my next component:
Roserade @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 Spd
Calm Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Sleep Powder
- Leaf Storm
- Rest
Roserade can demolish all three of these threats without breaking a sweat, provided Azumarill isn't running Ice Punch. When they inevitably switch out, it is excellent to either lay down a toxic spikes layer or Sleep Powder the enemy and try to get in two. And of course, when a psychic, ice, or fire type tries to kill my dear Roserade, switch in to Heatran once more and tank or absorb the hit.
Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 232 HP / 56 SAtk / 220 Spd
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Shadow Ball
Rotom-W fits in seamlessly with my team. The moveset speaks for itself, really, and is quite standard. It functions as my Heatran and Talonflame counters, and can hold its own against a plethora of other threats. With only one weakness, Rotom-W is a huge pain for me to face myself if Roserade has been taken out, and it can be truly lethal, as I'm sure many of you are aware.
Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- U-turn
- Pursuit
Scizor, the fairy-killer. I don't understand the appeal of Mega-Scizor, although bulkier, he's weaker offensively, and really this is still the #1 Scizor set. Pursuit + technician is one of the deadliest combos out there, and it has worked well for me so far.
Porygon-Z @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Spd / 136 SAtk / 120 HP
Timid Nature
- Tri Attack
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Dark Pulse
My somewhat-of-a wild card, Porygon-Z is my Gliscor-killer, my Conkeldurr-crippler, and with a ghost immunity he makes an optimal switch in to Gengar. While doing serious damage to Conkeldurr, it is a guaranteed suicide, but his unexpectedness often leaves many common OU threats unprepared to face it. That and Adaptability makes Tri-Attack absolutely murderous.
...and there you have it! My main concern is that I might not be using the available movepool to the best of my ability, but if you spot anything else, let me know! Thanks for reading. Cheers!
