Overwhelming

So I decided to dip my toes into competitive Pokemon battling, simply because I have played to death EVERY single generation.
Except its all so overwhelming and I have no idea where to start. Help?
I didn't know where to put this. I couldn't find an "Introductions" thread or similar.

No introduction threads, they're a waste of time and just pc++. This forum has something like 75,000 members now, you honestly think each one is going introduce themselves?
Yes, competitive pokemon is fucking complicated. The sheer amount of information you have to know is ridiculous.
Lurk, it's the only way. I lurked the analysis's on smogon for a good six months before I even registered, then I didn't post for another five months after that. Lurking is the best teacher. Read a lot of the gen four analysis's, read potw on serebii, go onto pokemon online and get your ass handed to you a couple of times.

we don't do introduction threads just because they mostly go down like this, but if you want to get introduced to the community and ingrain yourself your best bet is to get on irc, where most of the community interacts. we have a guide on getting yourself connected and onto the appropriate channels here

vkca has already linked you to the articles, so you know there's a good place to start. you'll also no doubt want to read/lurk the pokemon and competitive forums

also please be sure to read the rules of every subforum you use (ours are here) and you can't go too far wrong
