Phantasy Star Online

Has anyone else played these games? God, Phantasy Star on XBox took over my life for a long time, and I have great memories of it. I played PSO religiously a couple years back; one of my friends had the Phantasy Star Online Versions 1 & 2 and XBox Live and he showed me the game. Soon after, I got it for myself and it all went down from there.

I'm sure I've spent over 1000 hours of my life on this game. I would stay at my friends house and we would play all day and well into the night, hunting red boxes, killing Boombas, and eventually falling into that state of sleep-deprivation where everything is fucking hilarious.

I always preferred using Hunters myself. They have the coolest weapons.

My avatar might be a bit of a tip off here.

I didn't really have a good way to get my version of PSO (GCN) online so I mostly played it offline with a friend of mine... I had it online for a brief period when LordS and I both had a 'man i really feel playing pso' kick around the time PSO3 came out but we got over it pretty quickly. Definitely a solid game though!

I knew I would get at least one post once I recognized your avatar.

But yeah, I don't have XBL anymore so I don't play. I guess I'm over it now; I haven't felt the urge to pick up the game in years.

This game brings back fond memories. I bought the game on a whim, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and then proceeded to introduce a few of my friends to it. They ended up becoming unreasonably obsessed with it to the point of which each friend I had introduced to it had at LEAST one level 100, and often several characters in the 90's. Considering I had never gotten anywhere past the level 40's (just lost interest), it was a bit crazy to see their immersion in the game escalate. I didn't really want that for myself.

I played a hunter to about... 140 in the GCN version, but honestly there was way too much cheating for my liking... every weapon was duped with + 50s and such, you had level 1s maxed out in every stat because of boosters... Still a damn fun game though, especially with good friends.

I played PSO online with my dreamcast back in the day it completely owned my soul. I liked it alot more than the more recent incarnations, there are just some people you don't ever want to hear talk and that's what made me hate it on the xbox. I had a hunter as well and loved playing him.

wtf, the GCN version could be played offline? I would have gotten it then! The box said it required online play...

Yeah, the GCN version could be played offline. In fact, most players played solely online because hooking the GameCube up to the internet was too much of a hassle.

The XBox version, however, required you to have XBox Live to even play at all.

I love PSO and as you so excellently stated "Played it Religiously". PSO consumed me for the longest time. I always loved just playing through, getting good items, then kicking back and smiling. I got Phantasy Star Universe when it first came out for PS2 and have played it almost nonstop sense. Good times. 8)

PSO was my first real online RPG, was a pretty fun game even though it was so simple. I had a lv90 somthing RaCast with a NUG bazooka and the Yasminkov rifle, he kicked ass. Too bad he was shitty redria so I couldn't do offline runs for most of the guns I wanted, although I did get a lavis cannon which I got the NUG and a dozen other rare/uncommon guns for in a trade.

oh my god I played pso on dreamcast from the fourth day that it came out all the way to the day they closed the servers (with a nine month break due to not being able to afford internet). I first played a Hucast, but got bored without magic, so I made a Humar. Next was a Ramar, and I also played around with forces a bit.

That game had the best music, in fact I just downloaded the soundtrack the other day for nostalgia.

So yeah, you can say I had an unhealthy obsession with that game, I guess.

Oh god damn it, I should have gotten PSO instead of fucking Custom Robo. Beat that shit in like 5 hours and then could only play it when I was drunk.

I still play PSO a lot offline. I couldn't hook my GC up to the internet, but I still hunted non-stop for good items. My RAmar is so fun to play. I bought PSU, but it sucks since you need to have a broadband internet connection to play online, which I won't be able to get for at least another 1 1/2-2 years. The offline mode isn't that great, they should have just kept it like PSO, where online was obviously better and more fun with extra stuff, but offline was just as addicting.

How's that shit compare to Phantasy Star Universe? I own the latter but I assumed it sucked ass and never really played it online seriously.

I've never played PSU so I don't really know how it compares. I expect it has the same general gameplay as PSO, which is pretty much hacking and slashing through rooms full of monsters to get to a boss.

Also in PSO you choose from character classes (Hunter, Ranger, and Force) that contain several races, whereas in PSU you choose a race and the job is based on that race's forte. At least, I think that's how it works in PSU, right?

My biggest gripe with PSU is that you can't take weapons and items that you get from your offline character and use them online, and vice versa. In PSU the offline and online aspects are totally separated, and in PSO they were not.

PSU can't compare to PSO. The game had classic music, great graphics for it's time (hell, PSO on dreamcast still holds up today), amazing bosses and was innovative.

I held off on buying PSU until I could try it, and I'm glad I did wait. I've played it for ten hours at my friend's house, and not only is it not as good because of the above reasons, I also just don't get that same feeling when I play it.

So overall, while PSU isn't a terrible game, they definitely didn't do the original justice.
