Physically Defensive (Gligar) @ Eviolite
Ability: Immunity
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 40 SpD / 16 Spe
Tera Type: Water / Steel
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock / Spikes
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Knock Off / U-turn
[SET COMMENTS]
Gligar breaks into the scene as one of PU's top utility Pokemon, able to support a variety of teams with entry hazards and serviceable bulk. In addition, its excellent defensive typing allows it to stand up to many key threats, such as Flamigo and Golurk. Stealth Rock is generally preferred but can be swapped for Spikes if the team already has another Stealth Rock user. Toxic prevents bulkier foes like Bellibolt and Mudsdale from sticking around for too long while also putting setup sweepers like Delphox and Florges on a timer. Knock Off gives Gligar an extra layer of utility by removing items from foes like Galarian Slowbro, Flamigo, Florges, and opposing Gligar, while U-turn is an alternative that allows it to function as a slow pivot that can bring in powerful wallbreakers like Toxtricity and Flamigo and also lets it exit poor matchups without having to switch directly. The added momentum also pairs well with Gligar's reliable ability to set entry hazards. The given EV spread allows Gligar to outspeed Adamant Golurk and avoid a 2HKO from Rotom-C's Leaf Storm after Stealth Rock while still having the maximum amount of physical bulk possible. Tera Water gives it key resistances to STAB moves from foes such as Bruxish and Paldean Tauros-W, while Tera Steel shores up Gligar's matchup into Toxtricity and Galarian Slowbro. Both also remove Gligar's large weakness to Ice. Tera should be used with caution, however, as Tera Water turns Gligar's Electric immunity into a weakness, while Tera Steel removes many of the positives of Gligar's defensive typing, such as its resistance to Fighting and immunity to Ground.
Gligar fits best on bulkier offense and balance teams that appreciate its ability to consistently set entry hazards and assist in making long-term progress. Pokemon such as Staraptor, Delphox, and Arcanine that can capitalize on Gligar's ability to cut into bulky foes through status and item removal make great partners for this reason, with the utility options Gligar provides making it much easier for them to find opportunities to close out games. Gligar also appreciates pivots such as Scyther, Rotom-H, and Milotic to help bring it in safely, and it can form a VoltTurn core with these Pokemon if it chooses to carry U-turn. Due to relying on Eviolite for a large portion of its bulk, Gligar is quite weak to Knock Off and therefore appreciates teammates like Scrafty and Virizion that can dissuade or switch into it. In return, Gligar can utilize its immunities to poison and paralysis to absorb any status conditions that may stop these Pokemon from sweeping effectively. This status absorption also comes in handy when paired with Wish users such as Scream Tail and Florges, as Gligar lacks any form of recovery and appreciates having teammates that can provide this for continued use as an effective stopgap. Florges, as well as other special walls such as Assault Vest Galarian Slowbro, can also partner with Gligar to form a strong defensive backbone and wear down each other's checks. Gligar is also almost entirely useless against opposing Gligar, especially if it opts to carry U-turn over Knock Off, so Pokemon that can threaten it such as Tatsugiri and Alolan Sandslash are appreciated. Gligar's matchup into hazard removers is also very poor, so Ghost-types to block Rapid Spin, like Decidueye, and Taunt users to stop Defog, like Bombirdier and Skuntank, also make great partners.
