Mesprit acts as a great defensive pivot thanks to its solid physical bulk with investment, and it can use its decent bulk to help check physical attackers like Hisuian Sneasel and Passimian. On top of its decent bulk and defensive profile enabling Mesprit to act as a reliable Stealth Rock setter, Mesprit also has good matchups against common entry hazard removers like Sandslash and Hitmontop. However, Mesprit can drop Stealth Rock to fit Healing Wish, a rare and especially good support move that makes burdening a teammate with running entry hazards easy to justify. Psychic Noise is Mesprit's preferred STAB for its secondary effect of stifling recovery from walls like Snorlax and Lanturn. U-turn is crucial for Mesprit to keep up momentum, especially against Dark-type switch-ins like Alolan Persian and Sneasel. Knock Off rounds out Mesprit's moveset, compressing even more utility and punishing Dark-weak or item-reliant Pokemon like Mismagius and Hattrem. However, Mesprit has a handful of other utility options that it can fit over Knock Off, including Encore, which punishes setup sweepers like Coil Orthworm or Shell Smash Minior looking to break through or take advantage of Mesprit. If Mesprit can't afford to fit Healing Wish over Stealth Rock, then it can use Healing Wish in its last slot to compress hazards and cleric support in one slot while still squeezing hazards onto Mesprit's set. As Mesprit tends not to need to stick around as a defensive pivot, it often runs Rocky Helmet to push as much passive damage as possible. Although Mesprit can fit Leftovers for some extra longevity, it has a tendency to lose its item anyway when switching in against Knock Off users like Sandslash and opposing Mesprit. A Relaxed nature doesn't dampen the damage from Mesprit's physical attacks compared to an Attack-lowering nature, and Mesprit often benefits from being slower while using U-turn in mirror matchups. Mesprit can use Tera Steel for fantastic defensive synergy with Levitate on top of a great defensive typing in general to better answer Sandslash and Dipplin as well as surprise physical attackers like Glastrier and Lycanroc. Tera Steel itself comes with its own drawbacks, such as giving Mesprit an unfortunate weakness to Fighting that worsens its matchups against Fighting-types and Fighting-type coverage move users like Virizion and Glastrier, respectively, as well as Heat Crash Snorlax variants. Mesprit can also consider Tera Fairy as an alternative Tera typing to gain useful resistances to Dark and Bug for taking Knock Off and U-turn better from Passimian and Poliwrath, and this can give Mesprit critical breathing room against Sneasel to use U-turn. However, Mesprit's role as a support Pokemon means it often does not want to exhaust a resource as powerful as Terastallization unless it absolutely has to.
As a physically defensive pivot with plenty of utility options and role compression, Mesprit is capable of fitting on a variety of teams and adjusting its set for its team's needs. Bulky offense teams and balance teams alike enjoy Mesprit's capabilities of acting as a midground against physical attackers and bringing in its more offensive teammates. Sandslash is a standout partner with Mesprit, as the two can compress plenty of utility moves between the two of them; Mesprit can run Stealth Rock to free Sandslash up to run coverage moves and Rapid Spin, while Sandslash has Knock Off to free up Mesprit to run Encore or Healing Wish. Wallbreakers like Clawitzer, Hisuian Sneasel, and Choice Specs Whimsicott enjoy free entry provided by Mesprit, and the latter two create pivot cores with Mesprit. Other pivots like Rotom-C, Jolteon, and Lanturn make great cores with Mesprit for their combined ability to keep up momentum and force opponents to get lost in the vortex. Healing Wish variants are appreciated by Pokemon that lack recovery or tend to rely on Rest, including Regirock, Sandslash, and Perrserker. Basculin often wears itself down with recoil damage from Wave Crash on top of repeatedly taking damage from entry hazards as an offensive pivot, and Mesprit can relieve it from KOing itself thanks to Healing Wish. Snorlax, especially Rest variants, greatly appreciates Healing Wish support to stay healthy and shake off sleep, and it can switch into threats like Mismagius and Magneton for Mesprit in return. Mesprit can't do much against Steel-types like Perrserker and Orthworm on its own, so it depends on Fighting-type teammates like Hisuian Sneasel, Passimian, and Virizion in its stead. Conveniently, these Fighting-types also match up well against Dark-types, such as Alolan Persian and Sneasel, that would threaten Mesprit.
