Moves
========

A strong Low Kick is the main draw of this set, allowing Greninja to surprise its specially defensive checks such as Ferrothorn, Chansey, Gastrodon, and Assault Vest Magearna when used in conjunction with Fightinium Z. It also allows Greninja to have the coverage to hit Heatran, Tyranitar, and Kyurem-B while dealing the most damage to Celesteela and preventing Mega Gyarados from setting up freely once Mega Evolved. Gunk Shot allows Greninja to hit Grass- and Fairy-types such as Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Clefable, preventing them from walling it with ease. It also has a decent poison chance, which can be useful to wear down the likes of Gastrodon and Mew. Ice Beam exploits the weaknesses of certain bulky foes, such as Landorus-T, Zygarde, and Zapdos. It is also an accurate move that scores guaranteed 2HKOs on Tornadus and Mega Latios. Spikes is utilized in the last slot to provide excellent team support by chipping down grounded targets. Dig instead of Low Kick can be used with Groundium Z to allow Greninja to OHKO Toxapex and Magearna that may try to switch in while still hitting Heatran, but Dig being an unreliable move afterwards is a major downside. U-turn is also a possibility, as it allows Greninja to pivot, scout your opponent's switch-ins to Greninja, and bring in teammates safely. Toxic Spikes is a decent option, but its effectiveness entirely depends on the opponent's team composition, making it inconsistent.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment allows Greninja to be as fast as possible while hitting as hard as possible. A Hasty nature is used over a Naive nature to better take hits from the likes of Heatran and other Greninja and to not reduce the damage output of Ice Beam. Protean allows Greninja to have a STAB boost on every attack it goes for, and this is what makes it so threatening to deal with. Fightinium Z allows Greninja to use All-Out Pummeling, which lets it break past its checks more easily. Alternatively, Groundium Z can be used with Dig to let Greninja KO Toxapex and Magearna.

Usage Tips
========

Attempt to bluff using Ash-Greninja because it is much more common, and utilize this to try to blow back typical Ash-Greninja answers using coverage moves. Since Greninja is excellent at forcing switches against foes such as Heatran and Tornadus-T, use this to your advantage to easily set up Spikes and slowly wear down the opposing team. Greninja is also able to beat most Defoggers in the tier, letting it keep up entry hazards. Don't use up Greninja's Z-Move right away, as your opponent might scout for it and try to pivot around it; instead, try to first put your opponent into a false state of security. Play aggressively and try to get Greninja in through double switches and the use of VoltTurn tactics to maximize its offensive presence.

Team Options
========

Strong wallbreakers, setup sweepers, and cleaners such as Mega Alakazam, Choice Band and Dragon Dance Zygarde sets, Swords Dance Mega Mawile and Gliscor, and Shift Gear Magearna all enjoy the Spikes support that Greninja provides, which puts their checks into range of their attacks. Utility Heatran is a great partner for Greninja, as it's able to beat Toxapex and Mega Venusaur while setting up Stealth Rock, and it also enjoys Greninja's ability to lure in Gastrodon and KO it with All-Out Pummeling. U-turn and Volt Switch users such as Tapu Koko, Landorus-T, and Assault Vest Magearna can help Greninja get onto the field safely. Common Choice Scarf users such as Landorus-T and Kartana are able to clean up much more efficiently when Grass-types and other roadblocks such as Tornadus-T, Clefable, and Zapdos are either weakened or removed by Greninja. Special wallbreakers that struggle with Chansey, such as Mega Alakazam and Mega Latios, enjoy Greninja's luring capabilities, as Chansey usually fears little from it. Reuniclus pairs well with the Toxic Spikes variants of Greninja, since it wears down Dark-types that Reuniclus would otherwise struggle with.

[Set]

Mention Z-Dig and U-turn in moves.

[Set Details]
  • Life Orb is also an option to let Greninja have all-around good damage output at the cost of recoil.
  • Expert Belt is another viable option, although it lacks the extra damage against neutral targets.

Not really because if you are running Physical Greninja, its either gonna be Low Kick or Dig, which require Z-moves, Life Orb and Expert Belt are more suited for special sets, if you are going to use them.

[Usage Tips]

Don't reveal that you're Protean Greninja for as long as possible, as this set can blow back typical Ash-Greninja answers using coverage moves.

Reword this because you always reveal it once Greninja attacks, this makes it seem like you shouldnt use Greninja for aslong as possible, which just doesn't work.

Take note that Greninja changes its type whenever it attacks due to Protean, so this can be useful against Grass-types and Clefable to resist their STAB moves, as you turn into a Poison-type with Gunk Shot.

This is far too basic and almost hand holding the user, ofcourse you're gonna be clicking Gunk Shot against Grass-types and Clefable.

Not even a mention on how you shouldn't use Z-Low Kick right off the bat, and should attempt to set up a Pokemon such as Heatran switching/staying in?

[Team Options]

Strong wallbreakers, set-up sweepers, and cleaners such as M-Alakazam, Choice Band and all the Dragon Dance sets of Zygarde, Swords Dance M-Mawile and Gliscor, and Shift Gear Magearna all enjoy the Spikes support that Greninja provides that puts their checks into range of their attacks.

Just as a note, we don't use M-Alakazam. We use Mega Alakazam, Mega Mawile etc.

and both share a common check in Gastrodon which can be worn down with the combination of Greninja's Spikes, and Heatran's Taunt and Toxic.

252 Atk Protean Greninja Low Kick (60 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Gastrodon: 108-127 (25.4 - 29.8%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Protean Greninja All-Out Pummeling (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Gastrodon: 286-337 (67.2 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Add VoltTurn users.
Also mention Pokemon that struggle with Chansey.

Ping me when this is implemented, I want to look over it again before I stamp.

[Moves]

  • Dig can be used with Groundium Z to allow Greninja to nuke Toxapex and Magearna that may try to switch-in, the main downside being that Dig is an unreliable move afterwards.

It also still hits Heatran.

  • Spikes is utilized in the last slot to chip down grounded targets that Greninja still struggles to break through, such as Toxapex and Mega Venusaur.

It's moreso that it provides very good team support.

Add Toxic Spikes to Moves aswell.

[Set Details]

Talk about Groundium Z being an alternative aswell.

[Usage Tips]

Take note that Greninja changes its type whenever it attacks due to Protean, as you can use the type change to your advantage.

We're on a Pokemon website, people will know what Protean does, so remove this.

  • Play aggressively and try to get Greninja in through double-switches to maximize its offensive presence.

And the use of VoltTurn

[Team Options]

  • Utility Heatran is a great partner for Greninja, as it's able to beat Toxapex and Mega Venusaur.

Also sets up Stealth Rock.

1/3, good job.

set - hasty over naive (explained below)

set details - hasty over naive to retain the mixed attacking but to better take on moves from tran + other gren and even stuff like zapdos/clef when you change types

otherwise looks good

qc 2/3

mention somewhere in zfight targets that it can dispatch a weakened av mag which can usually switch into special gren a couple times in a game.
Your opponent will naturally think that the Greninja on your team is Ash-Greninja as it is the much more common pick, so utilize this to try to blow back typical Ash-Greninja answers using coverage moves.
i wouldnt be so confident about this with protean gren being such a big threat rn, i do think “bluffing” ash gren is worth mentioning just try a different way

qc 2/3

Is Hasty>Naive unique to the Physically Based Protean set, or does it apply to the Specially Based one as well?

What about handling priority moves better, such as Extreme Speed, Bullet Punch, Sucker Punch, Ice Shard? I'm bringing this up because I feel like Naive should at least be slashed.
taking moves better from tran and the other threats abr mentioned is more relevant than those priority moves in this meta
