Azelf is the main screener for the team, it's mainly there as when screens are up, AV Azumarill is basically invincible on the special side and Pinsir can set-up Swords Dance without fear, unless the opponent has a move which hits super effectively. To prevent others from stopping Azelf, taunt is used along with its great speed to taunt other taunters without prankster first. Explosion is there so that screens aren't wasted waiting for Azelf to die while damaging the opponent's lead as well.
