A Shoddy Battle

WARNING: The following warstory is long and contains both fluffy writing AND off-tier pokemon. I kind of hope some close play and (hopefully) some clever moves will alleviate these faults. If not, well... hello to the mods and goodbye to my post :p

Its might not be the ideal Smogon warstory, but this is the first of dozens of matches that I've had that was worth committing to writing. Enjoy it if you wish, close it if you must and I hope you have a little fun.

My beloved team (also known as "We Die To Standards")...

Its a tough world out there for a trainer like me. Out in the world, there are monstrous beasts like Tyranitar and Salemence whose powers far outstrip those of my beloved pokemon. Yet, my team has been with me through thick and thin, and we've won many a rough battle. Against the best and the brightest, we might often falter, but we never go down without at least some sort of fight. We would give it our all to win.

AndrewRogue sent out Ninetales.
Notty sent out Rampardos.

My fox was ready and raring to go, and as soon as I saw this, I knew my first move right off the bat. A lead Rampardos meant a Focus Sash, so Hypnosis was my best move. A miss would be fatal, but Niney rarely let me down, and her Wide Lens was nice and shiny.

Ninetales used Hypnosis.
Rampardos fell asleep!
Rampardos is fast asleep!

Easy as cake. The Rampardos was at our mercy. Still, despite the reliability of Niney, my own faltered slightly. A Nasty Plot would be excellent, but a gut feeling told me a dual resist was coming in.

Notty switched in Staraptor.
Staraptor's intimidate cut Ninetales's attack!
Ninetales used Energy Ball.
It's not very effective...
Staraptor lost 21% of its health.

Oof. I was right. Although Niney was powerful in her own rights, a Nasty Plot would have gone completely to waste. Her chances of surviving anything from the cruel bird was unlikely. So, I'd have to take the small damage and wish I had a better resist. Still, no reason to expect a Close Combat, so...

AndrewRogue switched in Mawile.
Mawile's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Staraptor used Brave Bird.
It's not very effective...
Mawile lost 32% of its health.
Staraptor was hit by recoil!
Staraptor lost 9% of its health.
Mawile's leftovers restored a little health!
Mawile restored 6% of its health.

Not too big a dent, and some added wear and tear on the bird of prey. Of course, durable as she was, my intimidating Mawile probably would not think kindly on a Close Combat, so, the obvious option is to weaken his bird a bit more to protect my team.

AndrewRogue switched in Gardevoir.
Gardevoir traced Staraptor's Intimidate!
Gardevoir's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Notty switched in Azumarill.

Mrm. An unexpected turn of events. Gardy would have taken the CC with ease, but now an unweakened Azumarill... I hate surprises. Trusting in Gardy, I set out to cut down on the physical danger to my team.

Notty switched in Gallade.
Gardevoir used Will-o-wisp.
Gallade was burned!
Gallade was hurt by its burn!
Gallade lost 12% of its health.

Gardy's counterpoint! Another unexpected turn, and another devastating physical pokemon. Thankfully, he switched right into her flames. His physical threat was definitely minimized. Time to bring in some of my own muscle. I was half expecting him to predict the switch and Wisp back. My own error.

AndrewRogue switched in Flareon.
Gallade used Thunder Wave.
Flareon is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Gallade was hurt by its burn!
Gallade lost 12% of its health.

And my beloved and prized Flareon is rendered almost useless by one attack. Paralyzed, her Choice Scarf was completely negated, and considering the physical prowess of his team... Well. That simply meant no reason to switch out. I could at least count on her to do her job before she went out.

Gallade used Close Combat.
Flareon lost 85% of its health.
Gallade's defence was lowered.
Gallade's special defence was lowered.
Gallade lost 10% of its health.
Flareon used Return.
Gallade lost 110% of its health.
Notty's Gallade fainted.

6-5

Oof. Admirable effort from him, but I run two different WoW's for a reason. My team is physically fragile and needs to survive those hits.

Notty switched in Azumarill
Azumarill used Aqua Jet.
It's super effective!
Flareon lost 114% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Flareon fainted.

5-5

Flare was basically useless at this point, paralyzed and low on HP, and showing her dedication, was willing to take one for the team. I didn't want to risk Azumarill denting whatever I could have sent in. Time to set up for a revenge kill.

AndrewRogue switched in Leafeon.
Notty switched in Staraptor.
Staraptor's intimidate cut Leafeon's attack!
Leafeon used Swords Dance.
Leafeon's attack was sharply raised.

Generally a bad call by him. I should have anticipated the return of Staraptor and simply chipped away at his annoying resistances. Fearing for Leafy, I fell back to old tricks.

AndrewRogue switched in Mawile.
Mawile's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Staraptor used Brave Bird.
It's not very effective...
Mawile lost 35% of its health.
Staraptor was hit by recoil!
Staraptor lost 10% of its health.
Mawile's leftovers restored a little health!
Mawile restored 6% of its health.

Mawile's resistances and surprising physical durability were helping me wear slowly at the fierce bird. If I could get it to dent itself again... after his decision last time, I expected him to hit and run once more.

Notty switched in Azumarill.

Mawile used Iron Head.
It's not very effective...
Azumarill lost 13% of its health.
Mawile's leftovers restored a little health!
Mawile restored 6% of its health.

I hate being right sometimes. Despite her best efforts, Mawile's gaping appendage just wasn't going to cut it against Azumarill. To top it off, I was blanking on just what he could do...

AndrewRogue switched in Leafeon.
Azumarill used Substitute.
Azumarill lost 25% of its health.
Azumarill made a substitute!

Azumarill is tightening its focus!
Leafeon used Leaf Blade.
It's super effective!
The substitute took damage for Azumarill!
Azumarill's substitute faded!
Azumarill used Focus Punch.
Leafeon lost 59% of its health.
Leafeon's leftovers restored a little health!
Leafeon restored 6% of its health.

Well. Shit. I was stuck here. I really doubted he'd stay in to get Leaf Bladed, but if he outpredicted me, I WOULD be losing a pokemon to Focus Punch in all likelihood. Trusting Leafy, I did the safest thing I could.

Notty switched in Staraptor.
Staraptor's intimidate cut Leafeon's attack!
Leafeon used Leaf Blade.
It's not very effective...
Staraptor lost 22% of its health.
Leafeon's leftovers restored a little health!
Leafeon restored 6% of its health.

And pleasantly dent the Raptor. Yay. Of course, once again, I'm stuck in a pretty poor place. A Brave Bird will eat Leafy alive, but a Close Combat will ruin anyone who comes in. I decide to play it slightly safer and fall back on my old strategy.

AndrewRogue switched in Mawile.
Mawile's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Staraptor used Close Combat.
It's super effective!
Mawile lost 84% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Mawile fainted.
Staraptor's defence was lowered.
Staraptor's special defence was lowered.

4-5

Fool you once, shame on me. Fool you twice, shame on you. But I guess I can't fool you three times. Poor Mawile, even with his surprising durability, just can't endure a Close Combat, and considering I've run from the fierce raptor every time to protect my weaker pokemon. Mawile... I will avenge you.

AndrewRogue switched in Gardevoir.
Gardevoir traced Staraptor's Intimidate!
Gardevoir's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Notty switched in Rampardos.
Gardevoir used Will-o-wisp.
But it failed!

In my haste and anger at the harm that the bird inflicted on my Mawile, I walk into a ridiculously easy prediction. At the same time though, my Gardevoir didn't exactly have better options. A losing switch over all. With my pokemon wearing out from their constant swaps, I needed to end this fast. Knowing I would need Leafy's durability, I sent Niney back out.

AndrewRogue switched in Ninetales.
Rampardos is fast asleep!
Ninetales used Energy Ball.
It's super effective!
Rampardos lost 110% of its health.
Rampardos hung on using its Focus Sash!
Rampardos is fast asleep!
Ninetales used Energy Ball.
It's super effective!
Rampardos lost 116% of its health.
Notty's Rampardos fainted.

4-4

Knowing that my slumbering foe had a Focus Sash to protect him, I couldn't risk him waking up. Any blow would break my fragile fox. So, I instead opted to simple pound the sleeper to death and avoid any risk.

Notty switched in Azumarill.
Azumarill used Aqua Jet.
It's super effective!
Ninetales lost 90% of its health.
Ninetales used Hypnosis.
Ninetales's attack missed!

...my shock was apparent as not only did my precious fox move slower than the aqua rabbit, but her hypnotic attack also failed. My entire plan was thrown to hell, leaving me with one choice.

AndrewRogue switched in Leafeon.
Azumarill used Aqua Jet.
It's not very effective...
Leafeon lost 13% of its health.
Leafeon's leftovers restored a little health!
Leafeon restored 6% of its health.

Leafy provides a much needed wall against the powerful aqua jet. But, once more, I'm stuck with the risk of a sub-punch set-up. Trusting Leafy, I barrel forward.

Notty switched in Staraptor.

Staraptor's intimidate cut Leafeon's attack!
Leafeon used Leaf Blade.
It's not very effective...
A critical hit!
Staraptor lost 38% of its health.
Leafeon's leftovers restored a little health!
Leafeon restored 6% of its health.

More chipping! I once more mourn the fall of Mawile, but know what is coming up. Feeling in sync with Gardy, I send her out to absorb the blow that even the raptor won't survive.

AndrewRogue switched in Gardevoir.
Gardevoir traced Staraptor's Intimidate!
Gardevoir's intimidate cut Staraptor's attack!
Staraptor used Brave Bird.
Gardevoir lost 78% of its health.
Staraptor was hit by recoil!
Staraptor lost 26% of its health.
Notty's Staraptor fainted.
Gardevoir's leftovers restored a little health!
Gardevoir restored 6% of its health.

4-3

Notty switched in Heracross.
Heracross used Megahorn.
It's super effective!
Gardevoir lost 211% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Gardevoir fainted.

3-3

And once again, I have no choice. My beloved teammates, knowing this, are always willing to lay themselves down and buy me the time to avenge them.

AndrewRogue switched in Ninetales.

Notty switched in Azumarill.
Ninetales used Fire Blast.
It's not very effective...
Azumarill lost 25% of its health.

He could afford to risk his moves, but I couldn't. I had to hit hard in the hopes he wouldn't switch, and dent his pokemon if he did.

Ninetales used Energy Ball.
It's super effective!
Azumarill lost 43% of its health.
Notty's Azumarill fainted.

3-2

Ah hah. I KNEW he couldn't really be faster than Niney. They must have been equals, or a Quick Claw was involved somehow. We were still in this battle.

Notty switched in Heracross.
Ninetales used Fire Blast.
Ninetales's attack missed!
Heracross used Megahorn.
It's not very effective...
Ninetales lost 65% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Ninetales fainted.

2-2

He was mi... oh no. Outspeeding the bug was not enough, as Niney was failed by her Wide Lens, the searing heat of her flames going wide and leaving her completely open to the vicious counter. The game had gone from close to practically over. No! I couldn't give up! For Mawile! For Flare! For Gardy! For Niney!

Absol used Psycho Cut.
It's super effective!
Heracross lost 83% of its health.
Heracross used Megahorn.
Heracross's attack missed!

Absol used Psycho Cut.
It's super effective!
Heracross lost 73% of its health.
Notty's Heracross fainted.

2-1

This battle was demonstrating exactly how important every single one of our moves were. I had gone from winner, to loser, back to a competitor in a matter of turns. But he still had one pokemon left, and I still had no idea what it was...

Notty switched in Dragonite.
AndrewRogue switched in Leafeon.
Dragonite used Dragon Dance.
Dragonite's attack was raised.
Dragonite's speed was raised.
Leafeon's leftovers restored a little health!
Leafeon restored 6% of its health.

Shit. Locked into Pyscho Cut, Absol wouldn't be able to do anything. I had no choice but to switch... straight into a Dragon Dance. My hops of victory were vanishing before my eyes. I had to win though. I had to! I couldn't let them down.

Dragonite used Fire Punch.
It's super effective!
Leafeon lost 75% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Leafeon fainted.

1-1

I couldn't risk my last chance. I needed Absol to take Dragonite down. Thankfully, he bought into the kill Leafy plan. With a heavy heart, and a prayer for luck, I couldn't let my team down.

AndrewRogue switched in Absol.
Absol used Me First.
Absol used Outrage.
Absol went on a rampage!
It's super effective!
Dragonite lost 94% of its health.
Dragonite used Outrage.
Dragonite went on a rampage!
Absol lost 189% of its health.
AndrewRogue's Absol fainted.
Notty wins!

0-1

With unmatched fury, Absol leapt forward, taking the soft dragon by surprised as its scythe-tuft hardened and she turned Dragonite's own attack against it. The surprise was devastating as, aided by the Choice Scarf, she delivered enraged blow after blow against the resilient beast, knocking it to its back feet, sending it reeling, nearly finishing it with devestating cut after cut... but at the last moment Notty's final hope caught itself and retaliated with ground-shaking blows, the floor of the arena cracking as Absol was hurled away to the ground.

I knew it was over from the first blow as I rushed to the aid of my companion, dropping to my knees beside him, ignoring the triumphant cheer of Notty as he clapped the dragon on the shoulder. Patting Absol, I quietly commended her and the rest of my team for their incredible endeavor.

"You guys... thank you."

I smiled a small and pained smile as a I congratulated Notty, my hands shaking as I patted the containers of my wounded companions. In the end, I had let them down.

The reason why Azumarill went first is because of Aqua Jet, which is in fact a first turn move. I'm just surprised that it didn't use it again. Choice item, maybe?

Edit: I take it back. He must have used a wrong move. -_-

Really? How weird. My bad for not double checking that. The only thing I can think is he misjudged how fast Ninetales is. A shame, that kinda lames this battle up a lot more.

I liked it, but you sounds waaaaaaaaaaaaay too cheesy.

I'd advise putting Scores when teammates/enemies die, to keep people in the game.

i agree with SD, way too cheesy, but other than that, it was okay. don't feel you will be looked down upon for using your favorites. I know u didn't win this time, but when you do win, that is really all that matters.... It doesn't matter who you do it with.

Its less a "being looked down on" thing and more a "Smogon is the premiere competitive battling site, so this might not quite be in tune with what they consider an acceptable warstory." ^_~

Anyhow, I definitely agree that I filled this to the brim with cheese. But, really, isn't feel good, friendship based cheese what the franchise is all about?
