Pokémon, DLC and Creating a More Immersive Kalos

At E3's X and Y panel Pokémon Company admitted they may start thinking about implementing downloadable content in the future. Many Pokémon fans jumped at this to cry out how they would gladly drop money on downloads of older regions. However, this is a terrible idea that only stunts Pokémon's innovative growth. Gold and Silver were such great games partly because the implementation of time and change made Johto feel so organic and immersive. Through the years this time mechanic has lost its depth because of predictability and game guides. Downloadable content done well allows for a return of unpredictability and allows Kalos to feel just as organic as Johto did almost 14 years ago. I intend to tell you how this can be done and why regions being downloading content is a step in the wrong direction.

I actually have already written the article and it is on my blog. However, my blog has only one follower and I can expand and rework the article as much as deemed necessary.

Can you link us to your blog? We've done something like this before (a re-post from a blog), but it'd be good to see where our content is before we openly allow it.

That article is rather short, and it also ends somewhat abruptly, as it only brings up the notion of DLC and then just leaves that topic hanging (although to be fair it was meant to encourage the readers for opinions). Reasons why Nintendo already haven't done this, an example of another franchise which has had success with this, and whether or not new regions would be required when a new batch of species have been made are just some of the questions I'd like to see answered as well to give the article more substance. Whether or not you need to rewrite or reword what you've already written can be discussed, since we're not keen on simply re-hosting an article that has already gone live. But with that said, I like the topic, so I hope we can reach an agreement.

It is rather short an open ended, though it was meant to bring in comments and I tried to get it out quickly after the X and Y panel, since that's when it would be most topical. I have no problem at all reworking and extending the article to make it better and more suitable for the Smog. I would like to go more in-depth with my generation two analysis and intend to present more of an argument as opposed to an open-ended blog, touching upon the topics Bummer mentioned. The hardest thing will probably be finding another franchise with success with this as I'm not entirely familiar with any and the search terms for research seem to be quite vague, but I will try to find something.

That was more of an example question rather than a requirement, although it would help to strengthen your point so that it's not all theoretical.

Civilization V does a good job of handling DLC. It has major DLC (essentially expansion packs that add new civs, units, scenarios, and game features), smaller DLC (usually a new civ or two paired with some scenarios), and fan-made DLC, which is quite snazzy. Fans are encouraged to mod the game and upload the results for everyone else to download for free. You can create custom maps, units, civs, scenarios, whatever. Whether you want to recreate a specific war or point in history, mess around as Andrew Jackson or the Pope, or create a civilization of aliens or yetis, you're free to mod away. It helps ensure that the game always has fresh new content to try out~

That's a good idea, I'm 99 percent positive Nintendo would never allow player made content, but it is a great example of of what I'm pressing for and shows the potential of such dynamic DLC. Also, with so many fan made games and hacks there are many possibilities beyond just the cannon games, though since these are fans tampering with Nintendo's content I probably won't devote much space to that last bit.
Is there anything else I have to do or anyone else I have to talk to? Or should I start working on a draft, and if so by when should it be completed?

I know it's been a while, but I am still interested in writing this. I've been waiting for a response, and I'm not sure who, or even if, I should PM.

Sorry about that, things sometimes slip through the cracks.

Your article brings up some pretty cool thoughts. I'm definitely for it though I do question your use of the term "DLC." The term is usually referred to for an expansion to a game which would involve new characters, storylines, areas, mechanics, etc. You seem to include things like dialog and event triggers under that umbrella. I realize this is mostly semantics, but I think there is an important distinction here. Things like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood connect to the internet to control aspects pre-programmed into the game (some kind of economy stuff, I don't really remember). In that particular instance, it's more of an annoyance, imo, but I can see the potential uses. DLC, on the other hand, can add so much more. Just some thoughts on the matter.

I'm going to approve this and I look forward to reading.
