Pokemon Contest Discussion

I have been participating in the contest these days rather than breeding. In fact, my Gligar parents have a baby but I'm too bored to check if they have a 31 Iv or not so I decided to go into the contests, only to find out that it makes you more angry than IV breeding.

I beat Normal, another level which I can't remember the name of, and Ultra positively easy. When I reached the Master Rank though, it seriously got 100x tough. I have yet to beat it with my Palkia, which is maxed out in toughness because I fed Lv. 50 Poffins to it hehe.

In the Dressing Round, I still seem to get like 4-6 hearts while the AI gains about 8. I seriously do not know why this happens. I dress up my Pokemon up nice(I even bought a Cape worth 250 Cornn Berries...woot Emerald cloning!) and all but I think it has something to do with "matching the theme" . Does it really matter what background you choose? Does the background defines the theme? I don't get it.

Dancing round is easy but it also has its share of leaving you frustrated. Sometimes you forget what color is where because they are too spread out imo. And some other time, you think you touched the color only to find out that you touched the blank screen and not the button lol.

I thought the AI cheats a lot(Master Rank obviously...), in the Acting Round. It's like everyone picks the same judge as me and I haven't been in a round where I'm the only person that picks that specific judge. And then comes the round where a judge has four voltage and you did better in the last round so you're the last person BUT you still want to pick that judge and find out everybody picks it so you end up getting added 0 hearts.

So discuss and share your experiences. I need the questions from the Dressing section answered though, preferably.

I'm a little annoyed they've changed all the moves for contests. I brought across my contest teams from Emerald, expecting to breeze through the rounds. Hyper Beam, Explosion and Self Destruct have been totally nerfed (arguably these were broken anyway). Some of the combos I have (Peck/Drill Peck, Ice/Fire/Thunder Punch) don't give their bonuses. Most of the staple moves from RSE have been reduced in power and/or have different effects.

Guess I'll have to train some new guys from scratch!

I can't beat the Master Rank, Beauty Contest with my Milotic. If I do better then everyone in the first two rounds, even by a little, I can win. That's not going to happen .... :^(

I am using 5 Smeargle in Contests, one for each type. I've only won a few Cool contests with my cool Smeargle, and only maxed out the coolness of my cool Smeargle and I forgot the other one who has a maxed-out stat thing.

I also brought over an Aggron from Emerald. I was trying to get as many ribbons as possible on Emerald, so he had mixed moves (Take Down, Protect, Fire Blast, and Metal Claw), but he does even better in D/P.

I agree with Cullen about being annoyed with the move changes. Now, without move combos, we have to make up our own strategies, which are usually worse.

It's hard.

I have a Cute Riolu that won Ultra, but can't beat Master.

For the dancing, you can use the A/B/X/Y buttons.

And certain items match certain themes. There should be a list on the internet somewhere.

Buy the guides. They are mostly useless but if you want to see the movepool without spending 10 minutes googling it can be useful.

Oddly enough the porygon Z standard moveset does very well in the Beauty Contest. I made it past ultra without feeding it poffin so I think that if I feed it i can win.

In the Visual round, I don't think that the AI cares how well you dress up your Pokemon. I just randomly put on stuff and as long as I reach the maximum number of allowed decorations, I always get lots of hearts. But I HATE HATE HATE the Dance round; I can never get the dances right, and I can never trip up the other dancers.

Somehow I was able to beat Master Rank in one try with a Smart Venusaur with Green Scarf running Sleep Powder/Energy Ball/Sludge Bomb/Leech Seed. I must have been really lucky.

It seems to work well. It's from Nsider apperently. Thank You Emospace.

Nice.

And Unown, I wouldn't buy the 'National Pokedex' guide. It lists Brave Bird as special. After I read that I refused to trust it.

You made me smile.

I got Master Rank with an Entei I brought over, full Beauty and all beauty moves. (Yay fire.)
I'm currently working on Tough with Regirock, I got some easy rock moves on it that are all tough, and I have almost max Tough, just a few more berries...

EDIT: Anyone know any good Cute pokes?

I find smart contests quite easy with calm mind+psychic or shadow ball (they do the same things. It's also nice to have a basic 3 star move in there just in case you don't get to go first after calm mind.

By the way people, if my assumptions are correct on how the accessories work, then you mostly need to focus on getting as many on there as you can in the time alloted.

I've only done Normal Rank contests so far, as I'm not really fond of wasting the few berries I currently have. Maybe once I start getting less lazy and start planting them around, but not now. Anyway, I got into the Ribbon Syndicate with my SpecsMence, so it's not like getting more ribbons would be particularly worthwhile.

A wild Togepi I caught has all cute moves, so that might fare well in Cute contests. I dunno.

The standard Pory-Z moveset works great in Beauty contests. Use Nasty Plot first, then either Ice Beam or Tri Attack the next turn depending on whether you go first or not. Not to mention it likes dry Poffins because of its preferred nature, Modest. Mine won the Master Rank that way.

Just so you guys know, the type of the moves doesn't really matter. All it's good for is getting the judges bonus, and at the master rank (at least in the smart one), there are a lot of moves that lower the voltage of all the judges. I still like the calm mind+psychic combo or any of the moves with the same effects.

Since you people seem to be experts, I should probably ask this here.

How feasible is it, to have a pokemon with 200+ in every contest stat? Obviously, I'm going to need poffins made with multiple people.

Speaking of poffins, how much exactly does that poffin given out by that guy in the contest hall raise? I fed 3 of it to my eevee, and I'm curious how much it raised all of my stats by and such.

Quite feasible, seeing as you can use the Spelon, Pamtre, Watmel, Durin, Belue, Liechi, Ganlon, Salac, Petaya and Apicot berries to fully max out a stat with te Poffins they make. It's extremely easy with the pinch berries though, seeing as they give about Lv40 poffins.

Any tips on poffin making? AKa, what combination of berries work the best, especially when i'm trying to get 200+ on every contest stat?

they got rid of move combos??

Certainly for the ones I tried, don't know about all of them. Basically contests work totally different to RSE. I'm surprised they changed it so much - it would be like altering the base power, accuracy and secondary effects of every move for normal battling. But then again contests aren't nearly as popular as normal battling.

I also recommend the Gamefaqs guide for poffin making linked above. It not only lists the poffins you get ingame playing against the computer, but gives you the formulas so you can work out what berries will make monster poffins when playing with friends.
