Pokemon MMORPG?

Hello everyone!

I am here to tell about something I'm planning to do, but I would like to hear about your opinion, if you have one, or sugestion, or doubt, whatever. Well, this game is in the very, very beginning, but I have alread did a pokémon game in IRC before, so I have some experience with pokémon, and I hope this will be handy in the future. But IRC gaming is very different than a MMORPG, and I don't know if this is going to work...

Here is a screenshot:

Everything that I can do, for now, is to move the player inside a small map that I've made. Well, now, the next step, is to make the battle system and the wild pokémon, finally. Is this looking good? Is this going to work? Oh, dawn, too many questions... too few answers!

See ya!

I wish you the best of luck. I've been part of the community for two, and very large, Pokemon MMORPG's now and both have just given up the ghost. It is a massive project to simply copy a single player Pokemon game with all the mechanics and whatnot, but adding a MMO option just doubles this.

So I repeat, good luck!

This definitely sounds like a very cool idea. I hope your able to pull it off and make it into a great game for everybody. Good luck!

This idea was thrown around quite a few times back in the old Nintendo Nsider forums when I hung out there, but it was always given up on.

It's kind of like the holy grail of pokemon games.

I wish you the best of luck

It'd be pretty cool, I guess you get to interact more with other people and pokemon which is fun. Good luck with it!

I realy REALY want to think this will work..... but i doubt one person can do it without devoteing 4-8 hours a day for years... i think this kinda progect needs at least 5 good programers to have any real chance of sucseding.

So many have tryed... so many have failed... but I think if you can get the help of smogon's best programers, you may have a good chance.

If you are indeed good at programming, and you can get other good programmers to help you, sure, it can work.
Sure, it looks good.

But let me warn you... look at Shoddy. Look at the programming involved. A MMORPG is going to take a lot more programming then that, and Shoddy is already tough enough to program.

Other then that, good luck.

Is the text gonna be above the player all the time?

The only problem I see with that is if there are a lot of people at once, then the text may just get in the way.

If this is in a familiar programming language as what I have dabbled in, I could be some of a help.

Looks good so far though.

I'm using python to make it, but I'm still novice on it. So, I just expect that works, but it won't be perfect, I guess, and must have many bugs to be solved. But the plain is to just making it and updating it until it gets good enough to everyone.

The alpha will be released as soon I solve the primary bugs and a wild pokémon be ready...
I still have to think how's going work the npcs on the map... Oh, too many things! Any suggestion?

I'm sorry to be new on this, but I feel great with your support. That's what makes me keeps doing it, even if I can't see light on the end of tunnel yet.

Yes, that's for sure. Man, that is just the very beginning. All I have is a map, and when you step in the grass, it moves and leafs appears, just like in game. So, that's not too much, but it is something. Oh, the flowers are moving synchronically in the map. I still have to make many, many things...

Well, about the "saying system", it is just a sketch. I couldn't think anything better than that... But it will be changed as soon as possible. I don't like the idea of showing those messages on the map and having the risk of being blind for a flooding...

I will try to make it, no matter what happens, right?

I personally don't think it's possible to make a pokemon MMORPG except if one the following requirements are met.

1. You get Nintendo's help, or Nintendo makes a pokemon MMORPG.
2. You are a VERY skilled programmer (as in, you could even work in the game industry and you have a degree in it) and you get help from a large community.
3. You rip the engine off the actual pokemon game, like done in emulators. And yes, that's illegal (I think). But it would mean you have a solid foundation to base your MMORPG off. I have yet to see a big project of it, everyone seems to want to recreate pokemon, but thinking one can do it is naive.

Don't get me wrong, I wish you very, very good luck in making this game, but I would be very surprised if you'd succeed, as there are so many big and even more small things to work on, it's virtually impossible to recreate such a complex game.

Nintendo probably won't be making a Pokemon MMO anytime soon, considering that would require them to use their wifi and we all know what that's like.

It looks great, but every Pokemon MMO project I've seen has dropped off the face of the earth. And you have to be continually afraid Nintendo is going to shut you down through a C&D order.

Well, let me make me clear then. I don't have any intention of selling the "pokemon" image, so I don't expect to be alarmed by nintendo. It's just something I want to do, for free, for people, in my free time, of course.

If this is not legal, how explain the pokemon fansites around the internet? Some of them have their own games in the website and some others gains money with them (publicity). I can't see how they're "out of law" here.

That looks great, but you have to stay committed. Another Pokemon MMORPG that i had tried it was only in its beta. Then it gave up.
