[SET]
Toxapex @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Rocky Helmet / Black Sludge
name: Physically Defensive (Water)
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish / Bold Nature
- Poison Jab / Sludge Bomb
- Recover
- Haze
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes
[SET COMMENTS]
With its incredible bulk and Grass neutrality, Toxapex provides an essential check to many physical attackers such as Meowscarada and Sneasler. Its Poison-type STAB moves enable Toxapex to take on threatening Grass- and Fairy-types such as Meowscarada, Hisuian Lilligant, Primarina, and Hatterene, with Poison Jab being preferred over other Poison-type STAB moves thanks to its ability to beat bulky Calm Mind users such as Primarina and Hatterene. Haze prevents setup from Skarmory and Zamazenta, forcing them to attack into Toxapex's Rocky Helmet and take chip damage. Toxic can be used to force bulkier foes such as Sinistcha and Iron Hands onto dangerous timers; alternatively, Toxic Spikes can be used to force immediate pressure onto targets such as the Ogerpon formes upon entry and punish teams without solid entry hazard removal like Dragon and Water. Heavy Duty-Boots prevents Toxapex from being worn down, so it can continually find safe entry into foes like Meowscarada and Iron Boulder. However, Rocky Helmet punishes the plethora of contact attackers such as Scizor and Kleavor, while Black Sludge racks up recovery over time, enabling Toxapex to stay in longer against threats like Gouging Fire.
Swampert and Gastrodon make for an excellent defensive core, being able to take on many of the Electric-types that are tasked with removing Toxapex such as Raging Bolt, Magnezone, and Iron Hands and wear down Toxapex's checks like Kyurem with Stealth Rock support. Empoleon can similarly provide Stealth Rock support along with more reliably taking on the special Grass-types that Toxapex struggles against like Sinistcha and Hydrapple and being able to check Kyurem. Greninja provides a crucial Psychic immunity, threatens foes like Latios and Metagross, and uses its colorful coverage and blazing Speed tier to remove problematic offensive threats like the Ogerpon formes and Dragonite while apprecating Toxapex's ability to switch into faster physical targets like Meowscarada and Dragapult. Alternatively, Hisuian Samurott can take the role of the team's Dark-type attacker, being able to set up Spikes with Ceaseless Edge and more reliably remove targets like Hoopa-U and Gallade. Ogerpon-W is able to take on foes like Sandy Shocks and Rotom-W that check Toxapex otherwise while apprecating Toxapex's ability to wear down Grass-types that wall it such as Hydrapple. Keldeo and Urshifu-R are powerful wallbreakers that can handle Steel-types like Heatran, Hisuian Goodra, and Gholdengo that hardwall Toxapex otherwise. Primarina enjoys Toxapex being able to put targets like Ting-Lu and opposing Primarina onto timers while absorbing Poison-type moves from the likes of Sneasler and Alolan Muk, and in return, Primarina can take on powerful Dragon-types like Roaring Moon and Garchomp that can overwhelm Toxapex.

Liquidation and Surf allow Toxapex to not be countered by opposing Steel-types, being able to hit targets like Scizor and Skarmory. Of course, this gives up one of Toxapex's valuable utility options or even its Poison-type STAB moves, which can hinder Toxapex in other matchups.
