[Pre-Bank] On The Rise (1800+)

Introduction:
A relatively new battler, I entered the competitive Pokemon scene immediately after the release of generation 5. Being new and completely clueless as to the process of team building, I generally used teams created by other people for online play. With generation six out and my knowledge of competitive play having grown, I set out to create my very own OU team from scratch. The results seem to be positive, as I just hit 1800 on PokemonShowdown, but this is by no means a finalized team. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

The Team

184azumarill.gif

Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 168 HP / 84 Spd / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Superpower
- Waterfall

As soon as I heard Azumarill was getting the Fairy typing I knew he was going to shoot straight up to OU. He primarily serves as a revenge killer (though he can occasionally pull off a late game sweep) and a counter to dragon types. Play Rough and huge power is a wonderful combination, as it will almost undoubtedly OHKO anything weak to Fairy and can often do over 50% to switch ins (even when resisted). Aqua Jet allows him to effectively pick off anything with relatively low health that Bullet Punch might just not have the power (or typing) to deal with. Waterfall and Superpower can also be used to deal higher damage to predicted switch ins, if needed.

212scizor.gif

Scizor @ Iron Plate
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics

Scizor has two jobs; setting up and forcing out. The traditional Swords Dance and Bullet Punch combination has only received an increase in power with the Fairy type weakness to it, and allowing Scizor to set up can end the game. He serves as a wall for Mega-Venusaur and Breloom, both pokemon that could otherwise wreck havoc on my team. Even unboosted, it can OHKO Breloom with Acrobatics, and a Venusaur will either be forced to switch or try (in vain) to hurt him while setting up.

472gliscor.gif

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 224 Spd / 40 Def
Impish Nature
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Protect
- Earthquake

With Gliscor being my favorite Pokemon of all time, I was delighted to put him on my team. While mainly a physical wall, Toxic Stall remains an extremely effective tactic to dispatch opponents. He is also blessed with a fairly high attack stat, so Earthquake was given for a nice STAB. Lastly, I've noticed that he's an excellent lead against a team which uses Smeargle (a rising trend), as a protect will block spore and activate the toxic orb, allowing for Smeargle to only set up one entry hazard before a second Earthquake KOs or forces a switch. Gliscor is also a natural wall against Aegislash

479rotomwater.gif

Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Trick
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Blessed with relative bulk, high Sp.A, and speed, Rotom poses a huge threat to the opposing team. With access to Hydro Pump and Volt Switch STAB, he can outspeed and OHKO threats such as Excadrill and Mamoswine, and survive a +2 Brave Bird from Talonflame (then proceeding to KO with any move). Trick also allows for effective crippling of walls such as Quagsire and Vaporeon (see below) if done correctly.

goodra.gif

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Gooey
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Dragon Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Bomb

With 150 base Sp.D and Assault Vest, Goodra is the ultimate Pre-bank special wall. He'll be taking almost nothing from any sort of special attack and counter with an unpredictable attack of his own. Fire Blast will OHKO Ferrothorn (which was wreaking havoc on this team) and 2HKO an Aegislash while being able to live a +4 Shadow Sneak. Sludge Bomb can also weaken obvious Fairy Switch ins.

094gengar.gif

Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute

With 170 Sp.A and 130 Spd, Gengar hits fast and hard. Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, and Thunderbolt give him excellent coverage and getting him behind a Substitute will almost ensure at least one opposing Pokemon is getting KOd. He can also serve as an excellent revenge killer if the opponent is physically defensive or just might not be KOd by an Aqua Jet or Bullet Punch.

Notable Threats (sorry I'm lazy. No nice format and gifs for this)

Quagsire: This thing can dance circles around my team if not dealt with immediately, which is why both Rotom and Goodra have Hidden Power Grass (and trick). Scald can cripple all of my physical attackers, destroy Gliscor, and his natural bulk + recover can make KOing near impossible. However, an effective trick (or HP Grass from Rotom) can usually neutralize him).

Vaporeon: Same as above. Scald, protect, and Wish can effectively cripple most of my team. However, with a weakness to electricity, Volt Switching can often deal with this.

Gengar: Ironically, someone on my own team is a huge threat. If swapped in while Gliscor is out, there is literally nothing I can do to prevent subbing and doing a rather large amount of damage to my Goodra (or worse if Goodra is KOd).

Feedback welcome!

Man I feel your pain about Quagsire.

Also the above post is right.

Your team seems pretty good, nice and balanced but one problem I notice your Rotom is scarf, not so much as a problem but a hole is left in a check for a huge threat pre bank- Talonflame. Your only thing that can take it on without much fear is Rotom and with no bulk it's going to be whittled down fast, and after you lose that scarf you're going to get whittled even faster against a u-turn talonflame which is increasingly becoming more popular. So I suggest dropping Scizor, it seems like massive dead weight right now (honestly I would use a sub disable gengar and mega scizor) so I would drop him for a specially defensive tyranitar with rocks as your team also needs them. Stone edge vs talonflame isn't where it's at- pursuit is. You can trap it and deal a consistent 40-50+% depending on their EV spread. I have no trouble with talonflame whatsoever thanks to TTar. Perhaps your team does not have that much trouble with it right now, but cutting dead weight to eliminate a top threat is never bad. :)

I actually never thought of using a Tyranitar, but I think I might give him a shot considering I have noticed Scizor doesn't do a whole lot and saving Rotom exclusively for Talonflame when he shows up is annoying.

Lets see how it does for a few matches.
