Melvin was Namemaker's first Pokemon. Before he was found during one of the trainer's quasi-legal mining activities, Melvin spent his time as a Golett guarding an empty treasure room. Once Namemaker showed him it was empty, he was so grateful, he joined Namemaker as his first ever Pokemon, and caused Namemaker to move from the world of illegal mining into the professional battling scene.
The bond he shares with Namemaker is a close one, with Namemaker treating him with a mixture of respect and affection, and Melvin by, as a Golett bestowing on Namemaker the name, as a Golett, "Sir", and now as a Golurk, "Boss-man". Namemaker finds both extremely irritating.
