Protect/Detect drawbacks?

Today in a Wi-Fi battle I used protect with my Yanmega to get a Speed Boost, and it worked. It did the animation and said Yanmega protected itself. Well, the Frosslass I was facing used Blizzard, and it connected with my Yanmega and killed it. How did this happen? Is there some new way to hit past Protect that I am unaware of?

Well I've heard that Thunder in the rain hits through Protect, so I suppose Blizzard could do the same in a Hailstorm. Was it hailing in your battle?

So would moves like Aerial Ace work too, or is it only things that get more accurate with the weather?

I doubt AA would work. I think it's just because of the weather affecting the accuracy. Regardless, this needs some testing and confirmation...

Wow, my BP team can no longer have ninjask sub/protect for speed in front of kyogres and such. I didn't know about this either..

Well, they said that Blizzard was 100% accurate in Hail now. I suppose they took it to the max. Does No Guard work like this also?

I'm in the battle tower with a no guard machamp, and clamperl's protect just stopped dynamicpunch, so no... I thought people were talking about this in another thread on Smogon, and were hypothesizing it was like 50% chance of hitting for thunder in rain etc...

We should have some extensive tests on these...

Thunder in Rain, Blizzard in Hail, Solarbeam in Sun, and lesser powered moves as well... also if there's any difference between Detect and Protect for rate of "breakthru" failure...

I've encountered similar problems with Machamp's no guard. Many times Dynamic punch has gone straight though protect and detect.

All of these are 101% acc effects, so there might be something about 101% effects that can get through protect (swifts excluded)

I don't think there's a question that some of them CAN get through, it's just how often they do. And it's kind of weird aerial ace and swift don't work this way. I think I hit something using FLY with stone edge this morning -- quite satisfying (no guard of course). I assume aerial ace doesn't do that?

On a side note, I also noticed intimidate works for underground pokemon.

And why is there a move like bounce which is the same type and so similar to fly?

If your opponent is airborn in Fly, Thunder never misses and does x2 damage (not calculating the part flying they most likely have).

the only move i can think of that will go thourgh a protect/detect is Giratina's Shadow Force. ive never had a problem like that. maybe it was used twice in a row and you thought it said it worked but maybe it didnt. I've done that before.

If these reports are true, I suspect there's a certain accuracy for Thunder/Blizzard in the rain/hail...if only we knew what it was. =o
