Hey Guys. This is my first warstory, of the many logs I’ve saved. This is of my Mono-Type Psychic team, vsing a standard OU ladder opponent. I think it shows the powers of Azelf not as a suicide lead; And just read the log to see what a comback Azelf made even in the face of the enemy being a choice band scizor! Yes, this is a very short warstory. Short and sweet!
This was on Smogon Shoddybattle server. If you want to battle and I'm free, go ahead and send me a private message.
This team all started as I raised the question to myself; which is better, having a lead to set up screens, or having a pokemon to come in midgame and set up screens? The answer was, BOTH! After putting two screeners in, I think; I need to make use of these screens, who are good psychic pokemon? I chose Azelf and noticed I had three psychic pokemon. Screw it, I was over halfway there; lets just make a monotype team!
My Team Is:
Alakazam (M) @ Light Clay
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 Spd
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Taunt
- Reflect
- Light Screen
Alakazam is the lead. He outspeeds all other leads except Aerodactyl and beats them to the taunt. Alakazam beats most other leads except for Jirachi with Scarf, and Metagross who outpredicts you and attacks instead of using stealth rock. Psychic is there for some attacking off his high Special Attack.
---
Azelf @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Trick
- Psychic
- Grass Knot
Azelf is the greatest special sweeper in the game (in my opinion, at least) (in OU). Suicide Lead Azelf are wasted Azelf. Psychic is there for sweeping, Flamethrower mainly for scizor and Grass Knot for bulky waters. Trick is for whatever thinks they can tank Azelf: Blissey, Bronzong… whatever.
---
Bronzong @ Light Clay
Ability: Heatproof
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SDef
Careful nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Reflect
- Stealth Rock
- Light Screen
- Explosion
The second of my Screeners. And you didn’t read wrong, I use heatproof Bronzong. When heatran finds its flamethrower not scratch bronzong, and having it put up light screen in its face is a good feeling. I’ve never had anyone use a ground-type move against it BEFORE using a fire-type move; and I’ve only been hit by ground type moves a few times EVER with this team. If I need to switch because of Earthquake, I have Latias.
---
Espeon (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 Spd/252 SAtk/4 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
EspyJump makes a return from R/S/E! With Burn support from Latias and Screen Support, Espeon’s substitutes can take less than 25% from most attacks (and most special attacks after a calm mind). Espeon can deal decent damage by itself, or switch to Azelf.
---
Gyarados (M) @ Liechi Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Flail
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Substitute
I don’t think this is the most effective Gyarados. It is, however, the most fun! Normal and Water are only resisted by Empoleon (And after one dragon dance, Empoleon takes approximately 40% from waterfall anyway.) and Shedinja (When was the last time YOU saw a shedinja?) He is partially only here to switch into physical attackers that are too strong for latias to switch into.
---
Latias (F) @ Flame Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP/126 Def/132 SDef
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Psycho Shift
- Trick
- Recover
- Dragon Pulse
Go Latias! Latias takes those attacks and sends you a nice burn status, then recovers in your face! It is great to see super effective Ice Punches to do less than 30%. Max Attack Choice Band Ice Shard from Mamoswine does 18% with reflect and burn, as an example. If Blissey comes out to wall this set, and switch out to cure its burn, give it the Flame Orb! Same goes for RestTalkers. (Keeping in mind that you can trick the flame orb but still retain the Burn Status to place on another enemy later on.) Dragon Pulse to speed up the stalling of others so your screens don’t run out.

acaciastrain's moves will look like this.
jahikoi's moves will look like this.

Leftovers will be removed.
Scores will be shown after each KO.
Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause, Soul Dew Clause
acaciastrain sent out Aerodactyl (lvl 100 Aerodactyl ?).
jahikoi sent out Alakazam (lvl 100 Alakazam ?).
Aerodactyl is exerting its pressure!
My lead is an Alakazam; max speed with dual screen. He sends out Aerodactyl, which is one of the only leads that Alakazam does not outspeed. It is important that I get it down, otherwise it can deal a large amount of damage to my team with taunt. I know Psychic is a clean 2hko, so I choose to use it.
Aerodactyl used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!
Alakazam used Psychic.
Aerodactyl lost 54% of its health.
---
Aerodactyl used Rock Slide.
Aerodactyl's attack missed!
Alakazam used Psychic.
Aerodactyl lost 46% of its health.
acaciastrain's Aerodactyl fainted.
(5-6)
Rock Slide missing did not matter unless he had gotten major hax. His suicide lead dies.
---
acaciastrain switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Alakazam used Reflect.
A barrier was formed!
Scizor used U-turn.
It's super effective!
Alakazam lost 100% of its health.
jahikoi's Alakazam fainted.
(5-5)
acaciastrain switched in Rotom-h (lvl 100 Rotom-h).
And… Scizor appears, who is very dangerous to this team. Alakazam is not a suicide lead; but as my other team members don’t like a bullet punch or U-Turn, then I chose to set up Reflect. He U-turns, OHKOing Alakazam through Reflect which shows it is standard Choice Band.
---
jahikoi switched in Espeon (lvl 100 Espeon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Espeon.
Espeon lost 12% of its health.
Rotom-h used Shadow Ball.
It's super effective!
Espeon lost 88% of its health.
jahikoi's Espeon fainted.
(5-4)
And I brought out Espeon out. Because Alakazam is gone, I did not want to bring out my second screen users until later on. As long as Rotom wasn’t scarfed, Espeon is fine. But he did have a choice scarf, which allows me to send in Gyarados.
---
jahikoi switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's intimidate cut Rotom-h's attack!
Pointed stones dug into Gyarados.
Gyarados lost 25% of its health.
Rotom-h used Shadow Ball.
Gyarados lost 34% of its health.
Gyarados used Dragon Dance.
Gyarados's attack was raised.
Gyarados's speed was raised.
---
Rotom-h used Shadow Ball.
Gyarados lost 34% of its health.
Gyarados's Liechi Berry raised its attack!
Gyarados used Dragon Dance.
Gyarados's attack was raised.
Gyarados's speed was raised.
---
Gyarados used Waterfall.
Rotom-h lost 100% of its health.
acaciastrain's Rotom-h fainted.
(4-4)
Although I knew Scizor was going to switch in and Bullet Punch me for the KO, but Rotom is generally threatening as well to this team; I decided that sacrificing Gyarados was my best option; as I still did not want to reveal Bronzong.
---
acaciastrain switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Scizor used Bullet Punch.
It's not very effective...
Gyarados lost 7% of its health.
jahikoi's Gyarados fainted.
(4-3)
---
jahikoi switched in Azelf (lvl 100 Azelf).
Pointed stones dug into Azelf.
Azelf lost 12% of its health.
acaciastrain switched in Swampert (lvl 100 Swampert ?).
Azelf used Flamethrower.
It's not very effective...
Swampert lost 15% of its health.
If only killing Scizor was so easy. Scizor’s Bullet Punch does not KO Azelf behind a Reflect, which was a bad thing for him if he did not know. My Azelf is specs’d into Flamethrower so I flee to my staller.
---
jahikoi switched in Latias (lvl 100 Latias ?).
Pointed stones dug into Latias.
Latias lost 12% of its health.
Swampert used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Latias lost 36% of its health.
Latias's reflect wore off!
Latias was burned!
Ouch. A critical. It did not matter much, as this Latias is bulky and wont die to one more ice punch. After burning him, I can simply recover back to full health and steal his leftovers!
---
Latias used Psycho Shift.
Latias's attack missed!
Swampert used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Latias lost 52% of its health.
jahikoi's Latias fainted.
(4-2)
Wait, What? He got a crit, then I missed with Psycho Shift, and then he got another crit? Good night, sweet prince.

jahikoi: ...
jahikoi: ouch
acaciastrain: yeah
jahikoi: whats the chances of that lol
acaciastrain: sorry
jahikoi switched in Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
Pointed stones dug into Bronzong.
Bronzong lost 6% of its health.
Swampert used Curse.
Swampert's speed was lowered.
Swampert's attack was raised.
Swampert's defence was raised.
Bronzong used Reflect.
A barrier was formed!
Well, with only Bronzong and Azelf left, I switch Bronzong in. If I switched in Azelf, I could kill his swampert and then get killed by his scizor… Or, I could flamethrower and then get walled by one of his other remaining secret Pokemon. He uses curse as I set up a reflect; which was great! Now my Azelf wont be as squishy. As Azelf doesn’t kill max/max swampert with grass knot without any boosts (Planning to trick my specs), I explode to get that small bit of damage.
---
Swampert used Curse.
Swampert's speed was lowered.
Swampert's attack was raised.
Swampert's defence was raised.
Bronzong used Explosion.
Swampert lost 45% of its health.
jahikoi's Bronzong fainted.
(4-1)
Boom.
---
jahikoi switched in Azelf (lvl 100 Azelf).
Pointed stones dug into Azelf.
Azelf lost 12% of its health.
Azelf used Trick.
Azelf obtained Leftovers!
Swampert obtained Choice Specs!
Swampert used Ice Punch.
Azelf lost 27% of its health.
Uh Oh. I know I can survive a Scizor bullet punch at full health, but I just lost 39%... is that enough?
Keep in mind the leftovers recovery has been parsed.
---
Azelf used Grass Knot.
It's super effective!
Swampert lost 62% of its health.
acaciastrain's Swampert fainted.
(3-1)
One down, three to go!
---
acaciastrain switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Infernape used Mach Punch.
It's not very effective...
Azelf lost 13% of its health.
Azelf used Psychic.
It's super effective!
Infernape lost 100% of its health.
acaciastrain's Infernape fainted.
(2-1)
Uh oh. That 13% could mean life and death!
---
acaciastrain switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
He switches in Gengar… I hope he isn’t scarfed or then Azelf is gone.
Azelf used Psychic.
It's super effective!
Gengar lost 100% of its health.
acaciastrain's Gengar fainted.
(1-1)
Phew.
---
acaciastrain switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Azelf vs Scizor. Do I have enough health remaining to survive a bullet punch? Will 58% be enough? Scroll down to find out!
Scizor used Bullet Punch.
Azelf lost 44% of its health.
Azelf used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
Scizor lost 100% of its health.
acaciastrain's Scizor fainted.
(0-1)
jahikoi wins!
acaciastrain has left the room.
jahikoi: gg
Azelf survived on approximately 10% health.
If I had lost like that, then I wouldn’t be happy either. He leaves straight away.
Azelf saves the day, again! Another reason why you should not use Azelf as a suicide lead!
I admit, this warstory does not show extreme prediction; but I enjoyed this battle nonetheless. I hope you enjoyed reading it.
