Congrats to gum for winning this weeks PU Matchmaking with her Mesprit submission! The Psychic-type continues proving its place in the meta for its splashability and great array of options and its pairing with the Christmas Tree is not an exception! Also congrats to Oathkeepre for winning runner up with his Raichu-Alola submission. Great offensive power is achieved with those two! Thank you to everyone who submitted!

Week 6

Gurdurr has proven to be a powerhouse in the tier due to its great array of options such as its great physical bulk, priority, its ability to restore health as well as the possibility to boost up its Attack and Defense due to Bulk Up. This Pokemon has been a threat and a staple of the tier for a long time and its option for partners seems almost limitless thanks to its splashability. Even then its glaring weaknesses such as a low special bulk, reliance on Eviolite and how easily walled it is by threats such as Mesprit and Oricorio Pom-Pom do give it trouble. Which partner will help Gurdurr break through the tier with the great power of love *o*? This is a pairing that can go a lot of ways so Im really excited for this one!

Good luck!

Haunter @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Dazzling Gleam
- Destiny Bond

Haunter breaks shit for gurdurr and vice versa, most notably the duo deal with Tangela and Alolan-Sandslash respectively. Also, Knock Off from Gurdurr makes Haunter more threatening in general between the loss of evoiltes and lefties.

Scyther @ Eviolite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Roost
- U-turn
- Aerial Ace

Gurdurr and Scyther complement each other extremely well both offensively and defensively. First of all, Gurdurr is able to switch into threatening Rock-types such as Lycanroc and Aggron for Scyther while Scyther can make use of its decent bulk to switch into Pokémon like defensive and Scarf Mesprit if Stealth Rocks aren't up. Secondly, Scyther is able to bring Gurdurr in safely via U-turn against threats that Scyther invites in for free, such as Regirock, Alolan Sandslash, and Aggron. Finally, they both have very similar checks, such as Oricorio-E. In particular, Toxic Gurdurr works extremely well with Scyther as it allows Scyther to pressure Quagsire and Oricorio-E easier, and also potentially sweep late-game.

Simisear @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Grass Knot
- Nasty Plot

Simisear just compliments everything that Gurdurr can't deal with. Quagsire, Sableye, and Tangela all just give Gurdurr issues. Simisear can easily deal with all of them! Grass Knot is also there to give Gurdurr an easier time with Regirock even though Gurdurr can handle Regirock on its own.

252 SpA Simisear Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Quagsire: 408-484 (103.5 - 122.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Simisear Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Sableye: 208-246 (68.6 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Simisear Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Regirock: 398-470 (109.3 - 129.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

A Tangela calc isn't needed for obvious reasons lol

I chose Fightinium Z over Firium Z to help Gurdurr deal with Guzzlord

252 SpA Simisear All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 60 SpD Guzzlord: 510-602 (86.8 - 102.5%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

► For Gurdurr I decided to go with one of the most intuitive cores for PU ever. With Mesprit, not only do you have a great defensive backbone to check the whole physically offensive metagame, you form an offensive core that is very annoying to beat. But let's go in detail!

176535

@ Eviolite / Guts
252 HP / 44 Atk / 212 Def /Adamant
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Bulk Up
► Gurdurr only has two sets in the current metagame: Bulk Up or Toxic. For this core, Bulk Up is the best way to go. The reason is being explained in the Mesprit paragraph.
Gurrdur is able to beat many of Mesprit's checks: Skuntank, Sandslash and Audino for example.
► Defensively Gurdurr helps Mesprit to take on threats like the 2 Normal types (Kangaskhan, Stoutland), as well as the two Rock types (Lycanroc, Aggron).

176536

@ Colbur Berry / Levitate
252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe /Bold
- Stealth Rock
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Healing Wish
► Mesprit on the other hand supports Gurdurr defensively because it can pivot into Psychic Type attacks and one Flying STAB (coming from Dodrio, Oricorio, Swanna and so forth. But only once ofc).
► On paper, it doesn't seem impressive when it comes to the things Mesprit can take on for Gurdurr but the reason I chose it anyway is the following: Healing Wish is so nasty to deal with when combining it with Buln Up Gurdurr. Gurdurr often comes into situations where it takes percentages over percentages to deal with mons (Kangaskhan, Stoutland, (sometimes) Dodrio, Kabutops, Primeape, Skuntank, Golurk...).
► All of those mons are 1v1ed by Gurdurr but all of them do chip damage that heavily pressures Gurdurr because of it having no passive recovery in Leftovers.
► Additionally, dealing with 2 Gurrdurs that tried to setup (thanks to Healing Wish) in one battle is so hard to deal with if you don't have enough fighting resitances.

176537
176538
► If you ask me, that core alone is the reason I don't leave the teambuilder without having at least two good Fighting resists. So in conclusion, Mesprit is the best partner because of the impact they have on the metagame.
► If I had to build a team with those two, I'd personally slap Toxic Skuntank on there. You need a switchin to Mesprit - a way to kill it especially, as well as a way to pressure Silvally-Fairy, Clefairy, Jellicent and Quagsire. The latter one is the reason I'd put use Toxic Skunk. Why that Pokemon works well with Gurdurr in general can be looked up in Squash17 ^_^ 's post! :D

Banned deucer.
Reversing shiinotic

Cause it's sick

If You want to not worry about knock off for a whole team and spread really stupid coverage for anything to have a free switch, You might need that isn't a knock off in return? shiinotic is just more often the perfect grass or fairy pick which can handle a banned scyther u turn for only 60% (ps every stronger u Turner has a parting shot or volt switch partner shiinotic can abuse)

With rocky helmet/eject button You're often bulky enough to free click, heal+cripple, cripple, or coverage nuke on the tier

Gurdurr doesn't mind have random switch in from anything in the tier and shiinotic likes not eating status but often can do so better than average

Shiinotic @ Eject Button
Ability: Effect Spore /eject button
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Modest Nature / Bold
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Strength Sap
- Giga Drain /spore
- sludge bomb/leech seed / hidden power fire

rocky helmet dorio loses 12%+ 40% and will be in mach punch range easy, be careful of Z sets

Great job with the submissions, everyone! As I expected, the variety of partners that could be posted for Gurdurr was as unpredictable as I thought but that only made this pairings the more interesting! With such a diverse cast of characters, which of these will be the one to compliment this.....humanoid Fighting-type..(?) in love and in battle? *_*
