Deoxys-S is a threatening mixed attacker with diverse coverage and an exceptional speed tier, being able to outpace a majority of the unboosted metagame. Psychic Surge powers up Expanding Force while providing protection from priority such as Sucker Punch and Ice Shard from Kingambit and Chien-Pao. It can also disrupt opposing terrains and strategies which rely on it, such as the Seed Items and Surge Surfer. Ice Beam hits potential checks like Roaring Moon, Ting-Lu and Landorus-Therian. Thunderbolt is an alternative to threaten non-Volt Absorb Corviknight and Manaphy. Superpower flips the matchup targets such as Kingambit, Iron Treads and Empoleon while being a stronger option into RegenVest Roaring Moon. Knock Off is able to threaten opposing Deoxys-S, Latios and Azelf while punishing potential switch-ins with item removal, which weaken RegenVest users such as Swampert and Roaring Moon. Scream Tail and Volt Asorb Corviknight are able to check Deoxys-S, so it benefits from teammates like Moltres, Iron Moth and Gholdengo. Choice Scarf users that outspeed Deoxys-S, such as Roaring Moon and Latios, are able to consistently threaten it. Great Tusk, Iron Treads and Corviknight are great defensive partners who are not only check these threats but also remove entry hazards. This is especially helpful due to passive damage from Life Orb and entry hazards accumulating quickly.

Focus Sash and Taunt complements this, ensuring Deoxys-S is able to get at least one entry hazard up. Choice Specs offers more immediate power while sacrificing the flexibility of non-Choiced sets. However, its generally outclassed by Sheer Force + Life Orb or Hadon Engine sets which offer similar power without the drawback of a choice lock.
