[QC READY 2/3] Politoed

186.png

[Pros]

It is the only Pokemon with Drizzle in OU

Drizzle allows a bunch of Pokemon to become a lot more threatening, even if its temporarily.

Politoed has a pretty good supporting and offensive movepool, and a Water-typing is always useful for both.

[Cons]

The nerf to Drizzle puts a lot of pressure for Politoed to stay alive, as it will run out eventually.

No reliable recovery doesn't help it stay alive.

Outside of Drizzle it is outclassed.

[Set Recommendations]

Politoed @ Damp Rock / Leftovers
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Toxic
- Rest / Encore
- Sleep Talk / Perish Song / Protect

As Drizzle no longer activates Rain permanently, keeping Politoed alive is a top priority.
 • Two different variants - those with RestTalk and those without.
 • Scald is for that infuriating burn chace and STAB
 • Toxic is for wearing down the foe
 • RestTalk is Politoed's only recovery at all if you are using Damp Rock, and those 3 extra turns can come in handy. RestTalk also ensures Toxic won't wear down and destroy Politoed over time.
 • With Leftovers this is less necessary (although still a good option), so if you don't want to rely on RestTalk Encore is very good to allow a sweeper to come in for free. Protect can allow Politoed to get a bit of extra recovery (although this wastes a turn) while Perish Song can put pressure on the opponent, making it more infuriating to deal with.
 • Load up on a bunch of stuff that can take advantage of Rain like Kingdra, Kabutops, Toxicroak, you name it.
 • If you can Wish support is helpful to put some pressure of Politoed surviving, so something like Blissey, Sylveon, or Chansey works. Heal Bell/Aromatherapy works too for RestTalk variants (Bliss/Chans again)

Politoed @ Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Surf / Hidden Power Grass

 • Drizzle gives it even more of a boost to its power, alongside Specs.
 • Specs Politoed threatens every weather starter in OU, making it easier on teammates to sweep.
 • Hydro Pump in the Rain is one of the hardest hitting immediate moves in the game.
 • Ice Beam for Dragons and Grass-types
 • Focus Blast for Ferrothorn and Abomasnow
 • Surf for people who don't like to miss, Politoed doesn't need much coverage anyway
 • Hidden Power Grass is only useful for Water-immune Pokemon, which atm is pretty much Gastrodon
 • Once again loading up on Pokemon that like Drizzle is a good idea.
[Checks and Counters]
 • Gastrodon
 • Abomasnow
 • Goodra
 • Ferrothorn
 • Dragalge
 • Toxicroak
 • Trevenant
 • Tentacruel
 • Blissey
 • Chansey
 • Heliolisk
 • Rotom-W

Add Tentacruel, Chansey, Blissey, and Goodra in the checks and counters section.

Otherwise, great job!

Just saying, with the Sleep Counter not resetting any more, you should probably consider a RestTalk set (especially if you're using Damp Rock) for a more long lasting rain inducer. (Maybe a separate set)

Uh, the set already has RestTalk as its primary options (slots 3 and 4)

Shouldn't there be a Choice Scarf set? Choice Scarf Politoed is a pretty decent revenge killer, and it's rain boosted Hydro Pumps can rip apart faster/frailer Pokemon like Mega Lucario. It's pretty handy against Dragon-types as well. Nevermind.

The 3rd con is inaccurate as there are plenty of reasons to use Politoed outside of a dedicated rain team. The ability to change weather, boost water attacks and nerf fire attacks all on it's own is pretty significant even with the weather nerf.

I'd also agree with adding a Choice Scarf set, given how it is a potent revenge killer and can work rather well on some dedicated rain teams. While I don't think it will garner as much usage as the other two sets, its definitely viable imo and given its huge influence in the past generation merits a set on the analysis imo.

what alexwolf said made a lot of sense

I don't like Choice Scarf on Politoed in 6th gen. In last gen, the main reason to use it was to combine rain + revenge killer. Now, you don't have a rain team by simply slapping a Politoed on it anymore, meaning that Politoed should be able to have a decent amount of longevity. Specs and defensive can do this to a certain degree thanks to HP investment but the Scarf set not really (and the Specs set can be used as an ok nuke anyway, while Scarf is a terrible revenge killer). Lacks switch-in chances and is a bad revenge killer. Not to mention that Rain teams have way better revenge killers with Swift Swim being legal with Drizzle.

After a discussion with PK Gaming we both agreed a Choice Scarf set shouldn't be added, primarily based on what alexwolf just said.
