Draft Quagsire

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 7 onwards

**Price Range**: 5-6 points

**Overview**: Reliable recovery, multiple entry hazards, an amazing defensive typing, and two great defensive abilities make Quagsire seem like a fantastic wall that can effectively deal with many physical setup sweepers. Unfortunately,its crippling weakness to Grass-type moves and Freeze-Dry as well as its passivity can hold it back against foes with coverage or moves like Taunt. Quagsires's access to Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes allows it to be an competent hazard setter in most matchups, and Unaware enables it to check and disrupt many physical setup sweepers despite its mediocre stats.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Unaware Wall**: Setup sweepers without Grass-type coverage or Freeze-Dry can often be walled by Quagsire through Unaware, since it can use Recover to stay healthy enough to deal with them. It can also use these opportunities to set its entry hazard of choice or spread status. Quagsire's low stats require it to invest heavily to deal with either physical or special attackers, and it generally is only able to deal with one of the two.

**Defensive Utility**: If Quagsire is needed to check Water-type attackers or block Flip Turn, forgoing Unaware for Water Absorb can be effectivewhile still using similar utility moves. Passing on Unaware makes it susceptible to setup sweepers, giving the Water-types it is meant to check even more options to get around it, and most high-tier Water-types also have Grass-type coverage.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, Liquidation, Earth Power, Surf, High Horsepower

**Setup Moves**: Curse

**Utility Moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Recover, Toxic, Yawn, Encore, Haze, Seismic Toss

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Ice Punch, Sludge Bomb, Body Press, Stone Edge, Iron Tail (RC)

Niche Moves
========
**Whirlpool**: Whirlpool can be effective at trapping and damaging foe over time, especially ones that resist Quagsire's STAB movesand are immune to Toxic.

**Counter**: Sets with Counter can achieve surprise OHKOs on physical attackers, pairing well with Rindo Berry.

**Bulldoze / Icy Wind / Rock Tomb**: Lowering the Speed of foes with Bulldoze, Icy Wind, or Rock Tomb can allow Quagsire's partners to deal with faster foes that can beat it.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Quagsire often stays in for multiple turns, making the healing from Leftovers over time highly useful.

**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet allows Quagsire to provide even more chip damage against foes with contact moves, helping it beat the physical attackers that it is often expected to check.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Despite Quagsire's resistance to Stealth Rock, it is susceptible to being chipped down by Spikes and Toxic Spikes, making Heavy-Duty Boots a good option.

Niche Items
========
**Resistance Berries**: Quagsire's crippling weakness to Grass-type attacks and Freeze-Dry can be mitigated for one turn with Rindo Berry or Yache Berry, respectively, allowing it to deal with certain foes with coverage through Toxic or Counter.

**Mental Herb**: Quagsire's low Speed and passivity makes it especially susceptible to Taunt and Encore. Mental Herb can allow it to set entry hazards or use Recover for one turn against these moves.

**Eject Button**: To maintain momentum against wallbreakers or on pivot moves like U-turn that can chip Quagsire down easily, Eject Button can be used.

Tera
========
Quagsire should not be a Tera Capitan, as it removes one of its main strengths in its great defensive typing while not providing much advantage to it. If Quagsire is a Tera Capitan, it can defensively Terastallize into Grass-resistant typeslike Tera Steel and Poison. Tera Fire can also be combined with Water Absorb to remove its weakness to Water along with resisting Grass.

Draft Strategy
========
Quagsire fits well on balanced or more defensive drafts, dealing with opposing setup sweepers while setting entry hazards or spreading status. Access to Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes gives these types of drafts many options for setting hazards, making longer games more effective. This makes Quagsire a good late addition to many defensive cores, adding only one weakness with two possible immunities.

**Grass-resistant Pokemon**: Quagsire is often threatened out by foes with Grass-type moves. Partners like Tornadus-T, Gouging Fire, and Scizor are effective at switching into these moves and taking advantage of the status effects or entry hazards that itprovides.

**Spinblockers**: Quagsire can set its entry hazards of choice multiple times a match, and having spinblockers like Gholdengo, Annihilape and Pecharunt can allow it to keep them on the field.

**Offensive Partners**: Having many entry hazards at its disposal along with Toxic can allow Quagsire to soften opposing walls for its team. This support allows partners like Iron Valiant, Kingambit, and Iron Boulder to break through the opponent's team more effectively.

Checks and Counters
========
**Grass-type Attacks**: Quagsire's crippling weakness to Grass-type moves allows foes like Ogerpon-W and Meowscarada to easily OKHO it. Even weaker non-STAB attacks from Pokemon like Volcarona and Manaphy are also able to comfortably break through it.

**Taunt / Encore**: Quagsire relies on Recover, entry hazards, and Toxic to be effective. Foes that can disrupt these moves though Taunt and Encore can prevent it from dealing with setup sweepers or providing hazards for its team.

**Wallbreakers**: With Quagsire's mediocre defensive stats, strong wallbreakers—especially special attackers—including Latios, Iron Bundle, and Urshifu-S are able to muscle through it, even more so if opposing entry hazards are up.

**Chip Damage**: Quagsire is quite susceptible to chip damage from entry hazards and status, which necessitates repeated use of Recover, giving frequent opportunities to the opponent. Limited Recover PP can lead to it being unable to deal with certain threats in the long term, especially foes that can sustain their health.

**Price Range**: 5-6 Points

**Overview**: Reliable recovery, multiple hazards, amazing defensive typing, and two great defensive abilities make Quagsire seem like a fantastic wall. That is until its low defensive stats make it clear that it is unable to deal with a strong enough foe. Quagsire’s access to Stealth Rock, Spikes and Toxic Spikes allows it to often be an effective hazard setter in most matchups and its abilities allow it to ignore either stat boosts or Water-type moves allowing it to be effective despite its mediocre stats. Its passivity also unfortunately prevents it from dealing foes who can outsustain it.

Quagsire can also use these opportunities to set its hazard of choice or spread status. would mention that it has to pick between checking phys or spc, cant check both in the same game

**Defensive Utility**: If Quagsire is needed to check Water-type attackers forgoing Unaware for Water Absorb is effective, with these sets using similar moves as sets with Unaware. mention that a lot of waters do tend to have ways around it/can setup against it

**Counter**: Sets with Counter can achieve surprise OHKOs on physical attackers, pairing well with Rindo Berry.

add icy wind / rock tomb / bulldoze for speed control

Common Items

It's passivity also hinders it, preventing Quagsire from dealing foes who can outsustain it. I think you could be a little more positive here - mention that it can check a lot of physical setup sweepers & disrupt them. Also mention weakness to grass-types and Taunt as downsides

Add yache berry - checks bundle/kyurem/etc

Eject button is probably worth mentioning too for maintaining momentum on pivot moves / strong wallbreakers

Add mental herb for recovering/setting hazards on expected taunt / encore

Add taunt/encore - its slow and very reliant on recovery / hazards / toxic so its super susceptible to these moves
