Rain and Ninjas

My first RMT! Normally I don't do these RMTs but I love this team so I decided to give it a shot. Can't tell you how I put the team together because frankly I don't really remember. It was a while ago. All I can tell you is that I started wanting to use Arceus Ice on a team after I saw the set in TonyFlygon's database from YouTube. There was also talk of Thundurus being banned to Ubers so I wanted to see how he would fair. Shedinja is just awesome. Everything else just fell into place. I know, not very helpful for team building but this team was made for fun and isn't that what the game is really about? It is a plus that this team kicks ass though.

At A Glance:

The Team:

Thundurus (Anti-Lead)
Ability: Prankster
Nature: Timid/Modest
Item:Life Orb
Move 1: Taunt
Move 2: Thunder Wave
Move 3: Thunder
Move 4: Hidden Power (Ice)
EV: HP 4/ SA 252/ Spe 252
IV: Att 30/ Def 30

Prankster makes Thundurus the best anti-lead in ubers coupled with blotbeam coverage and you got one badass dude. Preventing hazards is essential when running Shedinja on your team and is one of very few Pokemon that can stop Deoxys-S from laying down any hazards. Thunder Wave neutralizes Scarfers from becoming threats. Thundurus can also OHKO non-defensive Kyogre and 2HKO Lugia, Ho-oh, and Kyogre that are running max HP and SpD. Hidden Power Ice is always useful when half almost of everything in ubers is weak to ice.

Terrakion (Physical Attacker)
Ability: Justified
Nature: Jolly/Adamant
Item: Focus Sash
Move 1: Close Combat
Move 2: Stone Edge
Move 3: X-Scissor
Move 4: Earthquake
EV: HP 4/ Att 252/ Spe 252

Terrakion’s role here is similar to the role he plays in OU. Close Combat can OHKO Excadrill, Blissey, non-defensive Dialga, and non-defensive Arceus Nor/Ice/Dark/Rock/Stl. Darkrai can also be OHKO’d provided that one of your team is already asleep. Close Combat also 2HKOs all Dialga and Arceus Nor/Ice/Dark/Rock/Stl sets, and Chansey with evolite. Stone Edge OHKOs Ho-oh and Thundurus. And 2HKOs Blaziken, Lugia, Rayquaza, and Reshiram. X-Scissor is used primarally to predict switch ins to Mewtwo and any Deoxys form. Earthquake OHKOs Heatran and 2HKOs Zekrom. Terrakion’s Achilles heel however is Giratina (or Arceus Ghost). Terrakion can’t really do anything against Giratina and switching out is not much of an option either since the Dragon Tail set is probably now the most common. Arceus Ghost will not stop you from switching but whatever comes in will probably have to take a Shadow Force to the face. Deoxys is obviously a threat as well but if your sash is intact Terrakion can actually OHKO Deoxys-A. All other Deoxys forms will live the X-Scissor so this only applies to the Attack form.

Shaymin -Sky Form (Special Attacker)
Ability: Serene Grace
Nature: Timid/Modest
Item: Choice Scarf
Move 1: Air Slash
Move 2: Seed Flare
Move 3: Hidden Power (Ice)
Move 4: Earth Power
EV: HP 4/SpA 252/Spe 252
IV: Att 30/Def 30

Shaymin-S is all about the speed. Air Slash with Serene Grace allows you to gain several OKs. Thundurus’ Thunder Wave can give you the super haxy paraflinch with Serene Grace. Seed Flare Hits both Groudon and Kyogre hard. The higher chance of a SpD drop again due to Serene Grace can ruin pokemon with a lot of special bulk. Hidden Power Ice, like with Thundurus, is useful when almost half of everything in ubers is weak to ice. Earth Power is to hit predicted fire and steel switch ins hard. Non-defensive Dialga can actually be 2HKO’d before it has a chance to attack.

Shedinja (Physical Wall/Special Wall/Annoyer)
Ability: Wonder Guard
Nature: Jolly/Adamant
Item: Focus Sash
Move 1: Shadow Sneak
Move 2: X-Scissor
Move 3: Wil-O-Wisp
Move 4: Protect/Sucker Punch
EV: Att. 255/Spe 255

Shedinja is probably the most gimmicky Pokemon in the entire game. Period. That being said Shednija can serve as an effective physical and special wall. Wonder Guard is undeniably the best ability in the game; only letting super-effective moves hit. Shedinja walls most Mewtwo sets and can hit back 2HOKing him however Mewtwos occasionally carry flamethrower or toxic. Where Shedinja really shines however is switching in against choice users. Forcing them to switch and landing a free hit on the switch in; Wil-O-Wisp if you suspect a physical switch in. Protect is for scouting for super-effective moves that may not be obvious although Sucker Punch is viable if you want something a little different. Sucker Punch will OHKO non-defensive Mewtwo sets 75% of the time. Using Shedinja without a spinner will sometimes limit him but I found that Thundurus’ Taunt was enough for him to still be viable. Having Shedinja on this team pretty much forces you to always lead with Thundurus to Taunt first turn hazards which will be even more common now that Deoxys –S is now uber.

5th gen probably brought more bad things then good for Shedinja. Reshiram and Zekrom’s abilities both brake right through Wonder Guard. Magic Bounce while not always seen in ubers can be deadly to Shedinja. Nothing is more annoying than getting your own Wil-O-Wisp thrown in your face for a free kill. 5th gen did however bring something good for Shedinja. Being so frail, the team preview does wonders for scouting potential Shedinja threats and stealth rock users.

Things that kill Shedinja: Rock , Flying, Fire, Dark, Ghost, Stealth Rocks, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Sandstorm, Hail, Any Pokemon with Terravolt, Turboblaze. Probably 1 or 2 more things that I forgot but yeah… you get it. People who don’t have all of Shedinja’s weaknesses memorized will often think that he is weak to Ice. Take advantage when possible.

Arceus (Ice) (Special Attacker)
Ability: Multitype
Nature: Modest/Timid
Item: Icicle Plate
Move 1: Calm Mind
Move 2: Judgment
Move 3: Thunder
Move 4: Fire Blast
EV: HP 4/ SpA 252/ Spe 252

What I hope Kyurem will become in Pokemon Gray. Arceus Ice is defiantly an uncommon Arceus. STAB Ice However OHKOs even yache berry Garchomp, 0SpD Groudon, Rayquaza, Shaymin-S, and any Genie. 2HKO max HP/SpD Giratina and max HP/SpD Lugia. Arceus Ice can take on Kyogre and fire back with a Super-effective Thunder. Fire Blast is for Steel types like Ferrothorn 2HKOing in the rain and OHKOing in anything else. Terrakion is something to be warry about as well as Ho-oh (in Sun), Blaziken, Tyranitar, Aura Sphere Mewtwo.

Being an uncommon Arceus type, opponents may mistake Arceus Ice for Arceus Flying or Arceus Water. By no means should you rely on people to make that mistake but if it happens defiantly take advantage of it.

Kyorge (Special Tank)
Ability: Drizzle
Nature: Modest
Item: Choice Specs
Move 1: Water Spout
Move 2: Surf
Move 3: Thunder
Move 4: Ice Beam
EV: HP 252/ SpA 252/ Spe 4

Kyorge’s role is to be defensive and offensive at the same time. Rain support is ideal for this team protecting from fire moves and increasing Thunder’s accuracy. Shedinja, while an effective wall if used right, cannot always be counted on. This is why Kyogre’s natural bulk both physically and specially helps round out this team. Water Spout is incredibly powerful with Specs 2HKOing even evolite Chansey. Surf is for STAB if Kyogre gets injured. Thunder is obvious with rain and Ice Beam hits Dragons super effectively.

Team Checks and Counters:
Unfortunately this team does fall victim to the infamous Dialga/Giratina duo. Arceus (Ice) is your best defense against these two; 2HKOing max Hp/SpA Giratina and 3HKOing Dialga. However Dragon Tail sets make bringing in Arceus (Ice) on your terms difficult. If Giratina is taken out first then obviously switch to Terrakion to OHKO Dialga; 2HKO max HP/D.
Palkia also walls this team effectively being that it’s only weakness is Dragon. However Shedinja can completely wall any standard Palkia set that does not carry Fire Blast.

Other Options:
Thundurus can be replaced with a spinner like Starmie, Forretress, and Donphan; the latter two being able to set up hazards of their own.
Choice Scarf is another option for Terrakion; for OHKOing any common Darkrai variant and revenge killing Mewtwos. However I shouldn’t have to say that three choicers is usually a bad idea. If you really want scarf Terrakion then give Shaymin S Life Orb.
Kyogre can swap Specs for Scarf if you want added speed. Surprising and OHKOing many Pokemon.

If you're running Shedinja, SpecsOgre, Shaymin, AND Ice Arceus, you NEED a spinner.

But moreover on the constructive side, I suggest not using Ice Arceus at all-or ever for that matter. Mono-Ice is widely accepted as the worst typing in the competitive metagame. Every physical attacking Pokemon that learns Earthquake will run it, the Uber metagame is filled with Pokes running fire moves due to the rampant Steel types running around, and Close Combats utterly demolish it. That being said, I think you should swap your roles for Kyogre and Arceus. Kyogre isn't meant to sponge hits at all, especially in the ultra-powerful Uber metagame where every attack packs a punch. Kyogre is supposed to come in at the right moment, and make your opponent decide which Pokemon is going to die from the Water Spout.

With Kyogre being more of a Special Attacker than a Special Sponger, I would suggest Steel Arceus, which would give you an important Dragon resist while still keeping your offensive mindset. Something standard should work fine, give this a whril:

Arceus @ Iron Plate
Timid
248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
-Calm Mind
-Recover
-Judgment
-Roar / Thunder / Will-O-Wisp / Substitute

I added Substitute purely out of personal bias, it just helps with everyone running Dragon Tail to try to phase out everything. It's your call though.

Additionally, Terrakion needs Scarf in the Uber metagame. His 108 base speed trolls everyone in the OU metagame, but with most pokes working around 110+ and everyone else running scarfs, Terrakion needs the speed. So yeah, switching to LO or a Sub-Seed set on Shaymin-S would be wise as well.

Good luck with the team!

I know, I know, running Shedinja without a spinner is freaking crazy. If there was a seventh slot I would totally put a Forretress or something in there. The only problem I have with Rapid Spin is how horrifyingly predictable it is when Shedinja is on your team. Easily avoided with ghost types and causing me much aggravation during battles.

I don't know what you mean by "Every physical attacking Pokemon that learns Earthquake will run it." Earthquake is not any sort of threat to Arceus Ice. Ground hits Ice for neutral damage. It's not super effective. Even for Choice Band Groudon it's a 2HKO. Support Groudon its a 3HKO. And if it is not a defensive set, Arceus Ice can kill Groudon before it even attacks once anyways. Arceus Ground can 3HKO unless your running Adamant which will get you the 2HKO.

Fire types are something to watch for but that is why I have rain support. Max att Ho-oh can't even 2HKO Arceus Ice in the rain. And with Arceus can easily fire back with Thunder. Reshiram will only get to 2HKO about 15% of the time in rain and Heatran can only 3HKO in the rain. Chandelure can't even guarantee a 2HKO in the rain. Admittedly Arceus Ice in the sun is a lot like finding Arceus with his pants down. Arceus cannot take any fire moves in the sun very well, if at all. Basically any fire move that is STAB is OHKO. Not STAB 2HKO.

Close Combat and other fighting moves are defiantly threats and there is really nothing Arceus Ice can do about it (except that CC is really predictable). Terrakion is the most problematic. Infernape and Heracross are also obvious threats although I don't see them as often as I used to. Blaziken may fear using High Jump Kick when I can just switch to Shedinja. Mewtwo has the same Shedinja problem and if Mewtwo is running Aura Sphere chances are he can't hit Shedinja.

While I have been amazed at how well Kyorge can take some eletrical moves I do admit that I would like to see him hit hard with Water Spout more often.

Steel Arceus would definatly help with 4th gen Dragons that are the constant nuisances of this team. Also it is a more proper defensive build then what I have now. May give it a try today. See how it feels with the rest of the team.

I Actually gave Terrakion a scarf when I first made this team but having three choiced pokes was not ideal so I decided that it was more important for Shaymin-S to have the scarf. I may reevaluate some day because i do miss destroying Darkrai that think they could just put me to sleep. :)
