Rain Wallbreaker (Manaphy) @ Waterium Z
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Surf
- Psychic / Ice Beam
- Rest
[SET COMMENTS]
Manaphy is an effective wallbreaker on rain teams, using Tail Glow to sharply boost its Special Attack and threaten bulky Pokemon like Alomomola, Toxapex, and Slowbro with a powerful rain-boosted Hydro Vortex. Thanks to Hydration and Rest, it also turns common status users into setup fodder, giving it free turns against defensive staples, such as Toxapex, that would normally cripple it with Toxic. However, despite its power, Manaphy can be difficult to fit on rain teams, which are already strapped for slots and often prioritize speed control, entry hazard removal, or stronger immediate wallbreakers. Psychic allows Manaphy to overwhelm Toxapex and Mega Venusaur without expending its Z-Move. Alternatively, Ice Beam can be used in order to preserve the Z-Move against the likes of Raging Bolt, Mega Latios, and Dragonite. Hydro Vortex is essential to Manaphy's wallbreaking power, allowing it to break through even the bulkiest of Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Galarian Slowking, and Rotom-W after a Tail Glow boost in rain. Modest nature is preferred over Timid to enable valuable damage rolls with Hydro Vortex such as OHKOing Rotom-W after a Tail Glow boost under rain.
Manaphy thrives exclusively on rain teams, where it can fully capitalize on its wallbreaking potential. As a result, rain support from Pelipper is mandatory, as it enables Manaphy to fully utilize Hydration alongside Rest for reliable recovery while significantly boosting Hydro Vortex's power, allowing Manaphy to secure key KOs after a Tail Glow boost against walls like Galarian Slowking and Blissey. Late-game cleaners like Mega Swampert and Barraskewda pair well with Manaphy, taking advantage of it using key checks like Slowbro and Alomomola as setup fodder. Mega Swampert, in particular, is mandatory on rain teams and also serves as a solid Electric-type check. Ferrothorn is a great partner for Manaphy, as it pivots into threats Manaphy struggles against, such as Tapu Koko and Ogerpon-W. Additionally, Ferrothorn supports Manaphy by offering Knock Off to remove key items from walls like Assault Vest Tornadus-T and Toxapex or by spreading Thunder Wave to slow down faster threats such as Mega Lopunny and Ogerpon-W, making it easier for Manaphy to break through. It also provides valuable entry hazard support like Stealth Rock and Spikes, which chips away at teams and helps Manaphy secure more KOs. Manaphy is vulnerable against faster Grass-types such as Kartana, Serperior, Ogerpon-W, and Grassy Glide Rillaboom. Therefore, Zapdos and Archaludon are good partners because of their ability to easily pivot into said Grass-types and threaten them out. In return, Manaphy helps break through bulky Ground-types that might otherwise slow down Zapdos and Archaludon, such as Ting-Lu, Gliscor, and Garchomp.
