Gen 6 Rate my GastroFlame/M-Venusaur balance team

Pokepaste: GastroFlame balance (pokepast.es)

Talonflame
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 192 SpD / 60 Spe
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Roost
- Will-O-Wisp

Talonflame is both defence and a sweeper/priority. It has really good synergy with Gastrodon, as Fire/Flying and Water/Ground have perfect defensive synergy with each other. It's our ground immunity and excadrill check (Levitate does not count as a ground immunity in a metagame with MB Excadrill).

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 248 HP / 216 SpD / 28 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin

Excadrill is our spinner and stealth rock user. Reliable hazard removal is crucial as Talonflame is 4x weak to rocks and Venusaur doesn't appreciate being worn down. I chose Exca for this role for a steel-type, rocks user, and fairy check.

Gastrodon (Gastrodon-East) @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Curse
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover

Gastrodon. It does what a gastrodon does. Walls Pokemon, water immunity, sometimes sweeps. It checks many of the same Pokemon that Mega Venusaur checks, putting less pressure on it.

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 232 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 20 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Synthesis

I chose Mega Venusaur for our mega evolution, completing the fire/water/grass combo. Venusaur is good at attacking and defending.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower
- Soft-Boiled
- Heal Bell

Clefable is our heal bell user, which is very important for a team with Mega Venusaur. Clefable is the best option for this role because of its typing and other utility (Also I hate Chansey and even looking at it fills me with RAGE). It had Stealth Rock originally, but I replaced it with Ice Beam and made Excadrill the setter after losing to Gliscor for the 7th time.

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 29 HP / 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Surf
- Recover

A fast and dangerous attacker, Latios is our biggest offensive threat and speed control. I originally had Defog on it as second hazard removal option. Eventually I swapped it out for Surf to be better against Heatran, Ttar, and Gliscor. Latios checks threats like Mega Lopunny, Mega Venusaur, Starmie, and a bunch of others that I couldn't be bothered to list because Dragon/Psychic is good. I think it's funny that this team currently has 3 solid Keldeo checks.

Now we have both Fire/Water/Grass and Dragon/Steel/Fairy. Should you aim to have both type cores? Is this a thing worth pursuing? I don't know.

Weaknesses of this team: The last time I tested it this team was really weak to gliscor. 5/6 Pokemon could do nothing against gliscor and it would easily sweep my entire team. I'm not sure if Ice Beam clef fully fixes this issue. Another Pokemon this team really hates is Manaphy. +3 ice beam 2HKOs mega venusaur and has a chance to 2HKO Gastrodon (Not to mention it might have energy ball and/or psychic which one shot these pokes).

Hey,

I saw this team never received any answer, that why I wanted to give you one.
I agree with you it has good synergy. Clefable to and Latios to cover Fighting-types like Mega Medicham and Mega Lopunny, Careful Talonflame and Gastrodon to for Psychic-types like Mega Alakazam, while Mega Venusaur covers their weakness to Water- and Grass-types.
The biggest problem I see with that team is it being overwhelmed by certain threats, while your team is relatively passive and therefore will have troubles to revenge. An example would be Mega Medicham. It is usually played Adamant and when brought it against Mega Venusaur it can click Zen Headbutt for free, since this lands a 2HKO on Clefable and threatens Latios with the combination of Bullet Punch. Usually the role of Medicham check would be taken by the likes of Slowbro. Since you are running Gastrodon adding a Slowbro wouldnt make much sense, but you could do is changing Latios for a defensive Latias. This could run 2 attacks including Thunderbolt, what would help again Volcanions aswell. Here is a possible set:
Latias @ Leftovers
Level: 100
Timid Nature
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Thunder Wave
This would also help against the weaknes to Gliscor you mentioned and with the T-Wave at least support against another threat Power-up Punch Mega Metagross. This could work itself through your team pretty easily. To have better coverage you could give your Clefable Thunder Wave to criple and/or change your Excadrill into a physical defensive version.

For a better coverage against Manaphy I would suggest giving your Mega Venusaur more bulk and reduce SpA instead. Here is an EV-spread EVs: 248 HP / 40 Def / 80 SpA / 84 SpD / 56 Spe. The mentioned Latias would also help with Thunderbolt or Thunder Wave, depending on what you need in the situation.

Thanks for sharing the team! I just tried it out with Paprikaflow's recommendations in a showdown live video earlier today which I'll shamelessly plug below:

Honestly I think any difficulties I had came down to my own skill (or lack there of) in ORAS OU. I did have a tough time (at times) with setup sweepers, and it makes me wondering if it's worth experimenting with an Unaware Clefable. I know Magic Guard is basically a lock for most players, but I figured if you have Heal Bell, might be worth a shot? Great team overall, thanks for sharing.
