Teambuilding Process
171314

I build the team because I find lv1 Togedemaru interesting. It is much more useful than Aron.
Spiky Shield helps it scout and kill some pm in low hp.
Nuzzle helps kill opponent's last pm or predict the ghost type.
I use U-turn instead of Volt Switch because I think Togedemaru should have the ability to kill a ground type pm. If U-turn touch a helmet, Shell Bell will heal it before it is switched.
171307

I add Mega Scizor because I think it is the most stable spinner. The team is so afraid of spikes and rocks. The first PM who can Defog I can think of is Scizor.
It can be a pivot and provide Togedemaru a safe way to come to stage.
When Togedemaru weakens the opponent's strengthened sweeper, Scizor can use Bullet Punch save the composition.
Scizor is the only member reluctanly counter Black Kyurem, which Togedemaru cannot defeat.
Because of the 4x fire type weakness, sometimes will make it loses tempo when it faces pm like Heatran、Victini and other Special Sweaper with hp fire.
So Scizor often becomes a fodder after it Defog one time and I have to keep supressing the opponent or there will be stheal rocks again.
I once replace Scizor with Sableye, but in the end I think Scizor is better.
171312

Togedemaru's best partner is sandstorm. Of course at first I choose Tyranitar because it can trap a ghost type, which Togedemaru cannot defeat.
But I choose Hippowdon in the end. On the one hand, there is not so many ghost types, only Blacephalon and Mimikyu will occasionally appear. On the other hand, Hippowdon's Yawn is so great.
When Hippowdon come to stage, it starts a sandstorm. Then it uses Yawn. The opponent's pm has to decide whether it should switch or attack. Next turn Togedemaru can safely switch on. If the opponent's pm try to attack, it will falls asleep in the end of the turn so Togedemaru has two turns to Endeavor and heals itself full under sandstorm. Of course if Togedemaru encounters a helmet it still has risk of fainting. Whether you take the risk depends on if you think it is worth sacrifising your Togedemaru to weaken the target pokemon with helmet.
At first my Hippowdon has Stheal Rock, because if Togedemaru hit one of the opponent's ground/steel/rock type pokemon to hp 1, he can use the pokemon to counter my Todemaru many times. So I once think I also need rocks to make these pokemons cannot hinder my Togedemaru.
But in the end I find that compared with the use of my stealth rocks, I'm much more afraid of the opponent's stealth rock. If I use Stealth Rock but have to sweep them away by myself, I think it's too stupid.
Also, though Hippowdon don't have good moves to hit flying types, the set can help it stalls many flying types' attack like Tornadus T、Zapdos(hp ice only hit 30%). So I add the move Toxic. Then it can defeat these flying types by itself. It is very useful in the ending of a game.
171317

Though I give up Stealth Rock, I still need to quickly kill the 1 hp ground/ steel/rock type. I think aside from sandstorm I aslo need snow warning. I need sweepers too.
Scarf Vanilluxe satisfies me more than Ninetales, I think. It has good Sp attack, and 78 spe scarf is enough. If I use Ninetales with scarf, its Sp attack is not reassuring. But if Ninetales doesn't use scarf, its speed is somewhat slow.
There are many pokemons counter Vanilluxe, like Scizor、Heatran、Magnezone. So I have to frenquently chain switch Vanilluxe at the beginning of a battle.
However, once I defeat the opponent's key pokemon, Vanilluxe can easily threat many teams, especially the rain team.
Scarf Vanilluxe can check Greninja(not scarf) and Ash Greninja, sometimes I will choose it to lead the team and kills it because many opponents never ever know it.
But most of the time I will choose the stable choice Togedemaru. It uses Spiky Shield to scout the first turn whether Greninja uses water Shuriken and whether it is an Ash Greninja.
The last move, I can hardly choose one between hp fire and hp ground. Hp fire is used to predict scizor and Ferrothorn and hp ground is used to predict Magnezone and fire types. I find that hp ground cannot 2hko Heatran and there are some other ground type moves in my team. I choose hp fire in the end but I still miss hp ground.
Well, if someone can persuade me to change Vanilluxe, maybe I will accept. But sometimes I think Vanilluxe is cool……
171318

Now my team still demands a lot of things.
Vanilluxe's coverage is poor. I need one more sweeper.
The team can be easily destroyed by water type moves.
I think the team can be easily broken by Scizor after Sword Dance.
One spinner is not enough. When emergency, I need a high speed defoger.
All of the requirements make me choose a scarf Volcanion.
The set itself is not very good. But in this team maybe it is reluctanly good. If there will be some other better advice about the position, I think I should have a try.
I also have difficulty choosing the move between Earth Power and Sludge Wave. Without Sludge Wave, Tapu Fini easily counter Volcanion. But without Earth Power, Volcanion fails to 0hko Heatran and Nihilego, which makes it badly hurt though can still check them when it is healthy.
Volcanion is not very fast though with scarf. It is slower than Grenija Ash, which makes me unhappy.
171319

The last position, I once use Sap Sipper Azumarill and Sand Rush Excadrill. I try to use these pokemon for stall breaking.
At first I think Sap Sipper Azumarill with Perish Song and Whirlpool can easily trap what I want to trap and become a good stallbreaker, but in the end I find a stall team with Sableye doesn't afriad of it at all.
What's more, because of many Heatrans use Taunt, Perish Song Azumarill even cannot defeat Heatran.
Well, but Perish Song Azumarill does very well when I encounter a Gyarados, which my team now doesn't like to see at all.
I try Excadrill a few day because I hate Clefable so much. In the end I don't think it that good because its lack of fire type moves.
When I try to use special bulky Gliscor I find it amazing. It doesn't afraid Rotom Washing at all, which I'm disturbed by the pm badly after Zygarde is banned. It's truly a good wallbreaker with high recovery and ground-fire coverage. It's a perfect status absorber.
Well, Glisor is so lovely and since I use it many times I rely on it to revese a battle.

However, after I replace Glisor with Azumarill, my team is much more afraid of Gyarados. Two kinds of mega Charizard、Blacephalon and Keldeo becomes more threatening too.
The team always doesn't like meeting a Black Kyurem. Mega Medicham is also horrible but I believe all the teams will be afraid of it.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-893441541
It is a battle I think I do quite good.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-895857141
It is the battle I use the team to get to 1700.

Well, I think I very want to add a Suicune in the team.
Suicune's extreme defensive set with Calm Mind and Rest can supress stall team.
It lightens the threat from Blacephalon、Charizard X and so on. I can also expect a Scald hax and defeat Gyarados.
Because of its ability Pressure, it can even defeat Black Kyurem because its Fusion Bolt's PP easily run out.
But now I cannot be determined to repalcing any pm easily.

Other pokemon cooperate with Togedemaru well:
Leech Seed Serperior . The very original version of my team has a Serperior, it supresses a lot and its Leech Seed gives Togedemaru a very safe turn to come on stage too. Now my team doesm't have the member, but I miss it.
Wish Audino, I didn't try it in my Togedemaru's team but I once used it in a Trick Room team. As a Regenerator Cleric I think it is flexible enough and after it uses Wish, Togedemaru can have a safe turn. Well, now my team cannot admit it because of the lack of position.

Can you send some replays if possible to see your team in action? Because your team seems really weird and I need to see how it actually performs before I judge.
Well, in fact most of the time I win because the opponent overlooked Togedemaru and Vanilluxe.

Gliscor helps me win Scizor

About half of a year ago, replays of my using Azumarill.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-782951246
The team is much more easy to deal with Serperior and Blacephalon.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-782758486
Hawlucha is nothing before Hippowdon. In the past the team can deal with Gyarados better.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-776598711
In the past Hippowdon has Stealth Rock so that it cannot defeat flying types directly.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-776173269
Those days this kind of team is popular.

My original teams modifies a lot of times.

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-757926307
The very ealy team and I try it again about a year ago, it's absolutely another team.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-748610482
I once try Sableye for some time. Azumarill's Perish Song can cooperate with Togedemaru too.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-739348725
Before I find Volcanion, the position I use Tentacruel.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-738385387
Before I use Azumarill, the position is Cloyster.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-735493615
Before I use Tentacruel, the position is Mantine.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-735058441
I also try Flygon.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-734145722
At first I use Landorus-Therian.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-713750974
Long time ago I use Tyranitar.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-713287000
The original team. Tapu Koko is Flying Z.

I love seeing unorthodox teams like this! Togedemaru is great =)
Also congratulations on the k8 peak, really impressive peak with a FEAR-like strategie!
I also liked the use of Z-Mirror-Move Koko, heat!

Let me give you my thoughts on the team as u posted it:
  • I think the synergy between Togedemaru, Mega-Scizor and Yawn-Hippo is amazing. I also wouldn't change the sets at all. My only idea would be Rocky Helmet on Hippo to knock out physical attacks with 1 HP, but i think this is a bit redundant with Spiky Shield and Leftovers are more usefull on the long run. Is Kyurem rly a problem with Mega-Scizor?
  • Hail is a two edged sword, since it also stops Togedemaru from coming in. And while I loved watching Vanilluxe surprise killing mons left and right in your replays, I'm still not totally sold on it.
  • Although I do understand what Volcanion and Gliscor do for the team, I don't think they support Togedemaru too much and think there might be better solutions. I'd definetly run Knock Off > Fire Fang on Gliscor, since it come's in handy in many situations.

General thoughts on Togedemaru (& team support):
  • Hazards have to be kept off the field, double Defog is obligatory
  • Toge hates Rocky Helmet or Leftovers on opposing mons, so Knock Off on the team might be usefull.
  • Ferro and Chomp equal trouble. Shell Bell activates after Barb's Damage, so Togedemaru is killed, right?
  • Once it's chipped, it's close to impossible to come in again. Possible solutions: Wish-/Leech Seed-pass, Healing Wish. I think this would improve the team a lot. Another way to recover would be Bulu's Terrain, but again, that's a two edged sword.
  • Just an idea here: what about Trickroom (?) to let it move first? Might be a bad idea though....
  • If it's burned it becomes useless. Possible solutions: Fini, Cleric
  • It needs possibilities to come in unharmed: U-turn support is needed!
  • Multi-Hit attacks are bad.
  • (Toxic Spikes might be nice, but as you stated, Hazards are not optimal since you have to Defog them anyway.)
  • The team needs to cover Mold Breakers, Ghosts, Stall, and have ways to finish of weakened mons. I personally would prefer priority over running two scarfers. The Scarfer should imo have access to U-turn to finish weakened mons without loosing momentum and bringing Togedemaru back in.
I don't have a finished team, but a lot of ideas that may or may not benefit the team. It's actually more like brainstorming and I bet most of these ideas actually make the team much worse, but here we go:
  • Weird idea if you wanna keep Vanillux: Scarf Pelipper over Volcanion, retains the switch-in to Fire Types and handle's Char-y, might run emergency Defog as well, reset's the weather and has access to U-turn to bring in Togedemaru again, Ground resist.
  • Or have you thought of Whimsicott? Offers a check to Ash-Gren (Water-Shuriken is deadly for Togedemaru) and Mega-Gyarados, Defog support, and Leech Seed + Slow U-turn could bring back Togedemaru (but that's situational). If you feel safe enough vs Gyarados and Gren with another fast U-turn Scarfer on the team, you could even forgo Moonblast for Encore, which stops Setup Sweepers.
  • Tapu Fini offers another way to deal with Mega Gyara and Ash Gren while offering a Fire type switchin and a way to deal with stall (if you also add Wish-Support to keep it healthy). A weird multi-purpose set with Scarf and Trick/Taunt/Nature's Madness/Scald could also double as a revenge killer, but I think normal Leftovers+Defog is better.
  • I personaly like Scarf Victini as a revenger if u use Whimsicott/Fini to deal with waters. It can get rid of Garchomp with Final Gambit and has access to U-turn to switch back to Togedemaru.
  • Magnezone could trap and kill some annoying steels, Volt Switch is nice to bring Togedemaru unharmed.
  • Alolan-Muk offers Pursuit, Knock Off, Prio and can suprise Ferro with fire coverage.
  • Bisharp in Misty Terrain is surprisingly powerfull against stall. It offers Knock Off and (situational) Priority. Also has access to pursuit, but hard to fit on the stallbreaker set =/
  • Calm Mind Clef (Calm Mind/Dazzling Gleam/Wish/Protect) could be your way to deal with stall and pass wishes at the same time, but without stored power, it looses to Unaware mons... Wishes without slow U-turn also only allow to switch in Togedemaru if at full health, so it's more like a pseudo U-Turn than a way to bring it back...
  • Xatu has access to slow U-turns + Wish, and it's ability blocks Hazards (& burns)! Other than that, it's a really weak mon...
  • Very weird idea: Zoroark to lure Ferro and Garchomp? But I guess the illusion doesn't say "Lvl 1" so the opponent will know it immediately, right?
  • (Thought about Sub Toxic Salazzle to poison Steel types, but guess that's to unreliable.
Sooooooo... To conclude, I produced a wall of text that probably doesn't contain too much that actually improves the team, but I enjoyed this brainstorming session very much, so thanks I guess :P Hope there is at least one suggestion that helps you a bit ;) Good luck climbing further!

Not gonna lie. Level 1 Togedemaru is heavily outclassed by level one Cottonee imo.

Cottonee @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
Level: 1
Docile Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
- Protect
- Memento

First Turn, leech seed, second turn, sub, third turn, protect, repeat second and 3rd turn. Due to leech seed taking away 12% of the enemy's health, that'll be about 500% of your health, so you're guaranteed to get a +1prio Sub every turn without punishment.

That's really impressive o.O
And the replay shows you beating a team with a Ghost, Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet =) Congrats on the peak!

I also see that none of my suggestions improved the team :D I playtested some of them myself and came to the same conclusion. You have to use selfsufficient mons in OU, focusing too much on supporting Togedemaru guarantees a loose in case it fails. Your team seems to be the perfect mix! Go on and reach top ten with this! =)

Some of your advice like the use of knock off is quite deserve considering. Now I try to use the current team to get higher points, and I would like to build a team with your advice with a new account

Watching some of your Replays, Knock Off over Fire Fang on Gliscor would have helped you in some situations (e.g. to get rid of Lefties on Rotom) while I only saw you using Fang vs a Lati and a Dragonite^^ This you change without changing the team too much =)
