ORAS OU Rate my Team: Heatran + Manaphy Bulky Offense

I'm pretty new to pokemon, and I've only recently gotten into building teams of my own. This is one of the first teams I've built myself, so I figured I'd ask around to see how good it is. This team is built around a Fire Water Grass Core of Heatran, M-Venusaur, and Manaphy. It works pretty well, but has a lot of problems with special walls.

Tornadus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Superpower
I'm not so sure Torn-T should be on this team, honestly. I set out wanting to build a team around it because of how threatening it is in the Metagame, but I've been using Heatran more as my special wall, and Torn-T never really does much in the games I use it in. I like having Flying STAB, and it creates a nice Volt-Turn Core with Landorus-T, but if anyone has any suggestions on something that would work better, than I'm happy to hear them.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
Heatran is my special wall and stealth rocker. Rocks are important for my team due to it's weakness to Birdspam and Mega Charizard X, and Heatran is nice to have around because it can also work as a counter to those things. It's typing is great, it has amazing utility, and it complements other members of the team. And while it does have a problem with water and fighting types, the next member of the team helps to remedy that.

3.png
Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 96 Def / 144 SpD / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power [Fire]
(BTW, not sure how to post pictures of Mega Sprites, can anyone tell me?) I really love the defensive synergy between Mega Venusaur and Heatran. Heatran tanks the fire, psychic, and flying type attacks Mega Venusaur hates, while this thing can tank water and fighting type attacks Heatran despises, while also dealing with annoying faries, bulky waters, and just overall tanking hits with it's great defensive typing.

380.png
Latias @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Healing Wish
- Defog
One thing Mega Venusaur despises is status, especially getting burned by attacks it's meant to take like Scald. Because of this, I chose Latias over Latios because of it's access to healing wish as my defogger. It's also great for nuking pokemon with Draco Meteor and Psychic STAB with Psyshock. However, I've realized lately that the only reason I need hazard control on this team is for Tornadus-T, so if that were replaced, I could also easilly replace Latias with another pokemon with status control, like Clefable or Gardevoir.

495.png
Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Energy Ball
Another thing this team was lacking in was stallbreaking/the ability to set up. I chose Manaphy because it could create a Fire Water Grass core with Heatran and Mega Venusaur, and because of it's access to Tail Glow, one of the strongest set-up moves in the game. I went with the standard 3-attacks version for the extra coverage, and since Manaphy didn't need to act as much of a wall due to how bulky its partners were. I don't think this pokemon needs to change at all, but I'm still open to suggestions.
683.png
Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Knock Off
- U-turn
When I made this team, I thought every team needed something with a Choice Scarf. Lately, I've realized that that's dumb and unnessesary, but Lando-T is still very useful on this team. For one thing, it's the only physical attacker on the team, which creates quite a few problems. But it still works well as an offensive ground type capable of tanking hits, as the second part of the Volt-Turn combo with Torn-T, and as a general check to fire types like Charizard and Talonflame.

So that's the team. If you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks for your time, and I hope you can help me improve my team!

hi nice team, follows the general idea of a typical venutran balance and it looks pretty solid on paper, but i have a couple of changes you could make to your sets. the first change i would make is to change heatran's spread to 252 hp / 4 spd / 252 spe, a lot of heatrans shift to fast + bulky in the current meta in order to be a reliable mega scizor answer, and being able to outspeed even jolly variants, which can look threatening to your team once lando has been weakened as you then need to rely on a scald burn from manaphy, and having that insurance against one of the biggest threats in the meta is very nice to have. with that said, you should consider latios > latias. the extra bulk isn't too important on this build and i don't think healing wish is necessary either, while having more immediate power with latios can make dealing with certain threats such as skarmory, which can set spikes easily against this kind of team and wear it down extremely quickly, easier. if you don't like the idea of latios and just want the extra bulk (i don't recommend this however but it boils down to preference), run tbolt > psyshock on latias. you don't need to hit mega venusaur/amoonguss when you have torn-t+heatran on this team and also your own mega venusaur for dealing with amoonguss. main reason for running tbolt is that it punishes skarmory and makes it harder for it to set spikes against your team.

✧✧✧Hello, Anime_Fan here✧✧✧
Your team has a strong build, but here are the threats I can spot so far:
  • They're easily pressured by offensive Pokemon (e.g. from Mega Gardeviour, Mega Gallade, Mega Metagross and Mega Mega Pinsir).
  • It's vulnerable to Sand teams (especially +2 Excadrill who easily sweeps).
  • As you mentioned, the team has difficulty breaking through Special walls.
  • You need something to avoid status, Mega Venusaur especially doesn't appreciate Burns or any forms of status.
NOTE: A defensive Mega Venusaur is often used of defensive teams. So I'll be offering recommendations that are suitable for defensive builds.

manaphy.png

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Psychic
- Rain Dance

This Manphy set is great, it has the offensive prowess of a normal offensive set, so it can easily sweep unprepared teams. Rain Dance activates Manaphy's Hydration ability, which allows it to act as a status absorber. This benefits Mega Venusaur because now it doesn't have to take on burns and paralysis. And what's more, since Manaphy now summons the rain, this benefits Tornadus as its Hurricanes won't be missing in the rain! The choice of Scald and Psychic allows Manaphy to beat most of the Pokemon used in Stall, Psychic also allows Manapy to beat opposing Mega Venusaur and Amoongus.

latios.png

Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Roost
- Defog

I recommend Latios over Latias as it boasts greater offensive power. The difference in bulk isn't too big and it comes with defog as well, so Latios is a viable replacement. I recommend Roost because this now gives you team a consistent check to Mega Charizard Y, Keldeo, Thunderus etc.

skarmory.png

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Iron Head
- Spikes
- Roost
- Whirlwind

I mentioned earlier that your team is threatened by Psychich and Flying type Pokemon that carry a fighting type move. I also pointed out that Sand teams; especially Sand Rush Excadrill can potentially sweep through your team with ease. However by adding Skarmory this will no long by the case. Skarmory walls most Psychic type Pokemon such as Mega Gardeviour, opposing Latios/as, and it also walls most flying types that carry a fighting type move! And if that's not impressive might I had that it comes with Spikes, which is useful hazard stacking; thereby wearing the opponents team with Whirl wind. Skarmory forms a great core with Heatran, Venusaur and Latios.

tornadus-therian.png

Tornadus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Taunt
- U-turn
- Superpower

Since your team is weak to special walls, you could try this set. It forms a nice core with Manaphy whose Rain Dance boosts Hurricanes accuracy. This set uses taunt and life orb to wear down special walls by preventing them from healing themselves. However, the Assault Vest variant is still an option because it walls Gengar and Serperior. But if beating special walls is more important, then I recommend this Taunt set instead. It still checks Serperior and Gengar.

With these changes in mind, I hope it benefits your team. Have a great day :)

NOTE: Defog Latios can replaced with Mew, but not only will this push your team more on the defensive side, but you will also lose your check to counter to Charizard Y. However Mew is a great option because it walls the Fighting and Psychic types that now threaten your team.

Thanks for the team! It's a bitough more on the stally side than I'm used to, but it's a lot better at handling a wider range of threats. One thing I have noticed is that I have trouble working around Mega Sableye. Any tips?

Manaphy and Heatran should do nicely against Mega Sableye. The former can quickly set up on it, and if you're running TG + Rain Dance it can avoid getting burned, and the latter is completely immune to Will-O-Wisp and gets a boost from it. I mostly agree with p2 's changes. but if you're that worried about MVenusaur getting burned by Scald then you could run Tail Glow + Rain Dance Manaphy. Aside from that, it's a pretty solid team.
