XY OU Rate My Team

Ok, first off, I would like to say a few things. I'm new to Smogon, and I am new to competitive Pokemon battling in general. This is my first post on the forums, and therefore my first RMT(obviously). I also apologize in advance because I still don't understand some terms that most people use such as "Revenge Killer", so please bear with me. This is my first team that I've made, and as you will see soon, my team is mainly offensive.

Ambipom (Nicknamed "Pinecone's Balloon")
Item:
Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs:
30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Fake Out
- Power-Up Punch
- Knock Off
- Taunt

Overview: Ambipom is my starter. With his speed and attack, he deals quick and heavy blows on the opponent's starter. Although he has a low defense and special defense, he doesn't usually take too many hits, seeing as the opponent usually starts with a hazard setter.

Set Explanation:
  • Fake out: This is the move I usually start with. It usually goes first, doubles because of technician, gets another damage boost from life orb, and finally takes a STAB bonus(I think?). This is just a first move that can deal some decent damage without having to do anything.
  • Power-Up Punch: Another move that can double with the ability technician, and boosting my attack is a bonus. This attack is used to take out some hazard setters such as Ferrothorn.
  • Knock Off: This move is one that will double under technician(I'm pretty sure), and will knock off any choice scarfs, or other items(self explanatory). This can also destroy many ghost types.
  • Taunt: Usually the second move I use, after fake out. This will prevent any hazard setters, set-ups, and status inflicting pokemon to do anything.
EV/IV/Nature Explanation:
  • Attack is raised to inflict extra damage. Pretty easy to explain.
  • Speed is raised so that Ambipom can use moves such as taunt quickly, and his speed is very important.
  • Jolly increases speed, and lowers special attack, which I don't need.
greninja.png

Greninja (Nicknamed "Pinecone's Yoshi")
Item:
Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- U-turn

Overview: Greninja is my all out attacker, with amazing speed, and high special attack. I use him to destroy as a late game sweeper.

Set Explanation:
  • Dark Pulse: Secondary STAB attack that gives psychic types and ghost types a world of pain and despair.
  • Surf: Solid STAB attack that can be quite deadly to fire types and ground types.
  • Ice Beam: Takes care of grass types and dragon types that can be a threat to Greninja.
  • U-Turn: Used to retreat in case of low health, and is especially good with Greninja's extreme speed.
EV/IV/Nature Explanation:
  • Special attack and speed are obviously outlined, seeing as Greninja is all about striking quickly with power.
  • Timid nature adds speed while lowering the attack because Greninja's speed is priority.
sylveon_sprite_by_kumamaka-d5ygita.png

Sylveon (Nicknamed "Pinecone's Ribbons")
Item:
Pixie Plate
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Hyper Voice
- Calm Mind

Overview: I usually like to save Sylveon for last, as he can be a game changer. He has won countless battles for me several times, sweeping through the final Pokemon my foe has remaining. Although I use him offensively, he becomes a powerful special tank as well.

Set Explanation:
  • Calm Mind: This is the move I spam the heck out of, increasing Sylveon's already high special attack and special defense many times over. I usually spam this until about 2.5x or 3, sometimes 4.
  • Rest: When I get low on health from using Calm Mind, I use rest, and then-
  • Sleep Talk: Which can either boost my stats even more, or damage the opponent greatly. The only flaw to this is that occasionally sleep talk uses rest.
  • Hyper Voice: My main attack, boosted by the pixie plate, Pixilate, and the STAB bonus. Does devastating damage, even to steel and poison type when in conjunction with calm mind.
EV/IV/Nature Explanation:
  • Special attack and defense are raised so that I can do what I explained in the Set Explanation.
  • Calm Nature increases my Special defense so that I can last longer, and gets rid of some useless attack stats.
Mega_Pinsir-1-.png

Mega-Pinsir (Nicknamed "Pinecone's Flight")
Item: Pinsirite
Ability: Aerilate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Return
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

Overview: Yet another damage-dishing Pokemon, can do devastation to many types of pokemon.

Set Explanation:
  • Swords Dance: Raises Pinsir's attack even higher, which does loads of damage.
  • Return: Does more power with aerilate, and can give out damage to pesky grass types.
  • Close Combat: Takes out many stone types who are a major threat to Pinsir.
  • Stone Edge: Stone edge takes care of the pesky flying types, and does wonders against Talonflame, Mega-Charizard Y, et. cetera.
EV/IV/Nature Explanation:
  • Pinsir's speeds helps it attack first and OHKO most pokemon.
  • Special defense defends against most Special fire moves.
  • Impish Nature adds defense while lowering special attack, which is not needed.

hawlucha.jpg

Hawlucha (Nicknamed Pinecone's Weasel")
Item:
Power Herb
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sky Attack
- Acrobatics
- High Jump Kick
- Swords Dance

Overview: Hawlucha is has high, devastating blows against grass types and dark types. His attacks have very high power, and can overpower several physical tanks.

Set Explanation:
  • Sky Attack: The first move the Hawlucha will use, it does a solid 140 power, plus a STAB bonus. This is executed in one move by the power herb.
  • Acrobatics: Another STAB move that becomes even more powerful, because once the power herb is used, he is holding no item.
  • High Jump Kick: Another powerful STAB that can overpower many tanks, and the only flaw is that if he misses, much damage is taken.
  • Swords Dance: With swords dance and the STAB bonus, Hawlucha's power is increase immensely.
EV/IV/Nature Explanation:
  • Attack and defense are highlighted, as are with my other pokemon, so Hawlucha's moves are powerful and quick.
  • Adamant raises attack(which we need) and lowers Sp. Attack(which is useless for him)
250px-204Pineco.png

Pineco(Nicknamed PinecoAlmighty)
Item:
Berry Juice
Ability: Sturdy
Level: 1
- Pain Split
- Protect
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock

Entire Explanation: Finally, my (somewhat) trump card pokemon. The one that my username is named after, and the one that my team is based on(nickname wise). I'm just going to explain all of Pineco's functions in one paragraph.
So we start on the battlefield. Notice that Pineco is level 1, so that it is guaranteed that he will always go last. I start using protect. If the pokemon against my Pineco uses a status affecting move or a skill link move, I immediately retreat my Pineco(you'll see why). If not, then I start with Pineco using toxic. Assuming the pokemon on the other side is affected, he'll take damage. If the foe is steel or poison type, I'll use stealth rock. Next, the Pokemon will use a damaging move. Pineco's sturdy will save me, and I will have 1 hp. Now, Berry Juice will activate. Because Pineco is level one, the berry juice will restore him to full health(20hp). Next turn, the foe will no doubt attack again, knowing that the berry juice is gone. Pineco is once again left at 1 hp. Now, he uses pain split. Because of his low level, his health is low. Because of this, Pineco's pain split will bring him back to full health, and cuts the opponent's pokemon by 2. I keep using pain split, until toxic finishes them off. Now obviously, this is flawed, but I thought it would be fun to have a Pineco that Foes look and think "Ew, what a weak loser," only to be wrecked by pain split spam.

Anyways guys, this is my full team, and I hope you rate it and tell me how it is!

I don't have much to say on this except that no, knock off is not affected by ambipoms ability. It only affects 60 and below, knock offs 65. Unless you really want knock off id suggest using double hit, its inaccurate but its a very powerful stab move on ambipom, getting affected by technician and hitting twice ensuring heavy damage, especially if you have a power up punch boost up. Hope i cold help :)

dude greninja gets STAB on all it's moves, why do you only have 4 evs in attack on pinsir lol wut
on hawlucha i would recommend subsitrus cuz it doesn't autolose to mega pinsir and talonflame
oh yeah and btw i think your whole team gets swept by CB talonflame
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ambipom: 331-390 (113.7 - 134%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 325-384 (113.6 - 134.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Sylveon: 334-394 (85.2 - 100.5%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Pinsir: 402-474 (148.3 - 174.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 8 HP / 0 Def Hawlucha: 596-704 (199.3 - 235.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 36 Def Pineco: 6912-8132 (32914.2 - 38723.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO lol
obviously not accounting for recoil damage but you seriously need to change your team and get a birdspam counter.
oh yeah and btw the pineco thingy is flawed because any status, priority beats him. also pineco is just free set up fodder

Ambipom: Yep, give him Double Hit

Greninja: Extrasensory is much more useful in OU, and you can also use Hidden Power Fire/Grass over U-turn if you need more coverage.

Sylveon: Never seen this set before, but it may be outclassed by Clefable because Clef has better defense and Magic Guard, which allows it to run Flamethrower for coverage. If you want to keep using this set, run a physically defensive spread because calm mind will boost SDef. (Plus Sylveon already has good SDef)

Pinsir: Use Quick Attack over Stone Edge as it is strong priority. I hope the EVs were an error, because they are terrible and they should be 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe with a Jolly nature

Hawlucha: Cool set, but as Pikachu42 said, subsitris is better for this team

Pineco: I know it's your namesake, but using a gimmicky poke like this will make you lose a lot of battles. It's not even the best level 1 poke, that prize would go to Rattata or Shell Bell Aron. This might be fun, but you won't get very high rated with it.

Pikachu42 is right once again, you have a ridiculous weakness to birdspam. You need a solid bird check like ScarfTar or similar.
