Resource RBY OU INVITATIONAL VI - TOURNAMENT REPORT, ANALYSIS, TEAMS

I will try to mimic marcoasd 's thread from last year and do a report of my run from this year's RBY Invitational.

I will go over every opponent and talk about my thought process when selecting my teams. I will go over every game and comment on the games, trying to point out good moves as well as mistakes made (especially from myself).

Without further ado, let's jump right into the rounds:

ROUND 1 VS PEASOUNAY

Peasounay and I go way back. We started out around the same time on the ladder more than 10 years ago at this point and became freinds. We grew up in this game together. We have been practicing with each other for our first tournaments which we joined back then on PokemonPerfect and climbed the rankings there together. Eventually we competed for tournament victories and became rivals in a competitive sense. There are a lot of memories for me connected to Peasounay and I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and his skills. In my opinion he is one of the all-time great RBY-Players and he is proving it to this day. Winning the Global Championship is a monumental achievement and he did it not only twice but 7 years apart - it's one thing to be amoungst the best in 2017 but still showing up like that in 2024 cannot be overstated, a lot has changed in the meantime, but greatness does not go away. And right now he can almost smell victory in RBY Cup (as he is in the semifinals at the time of writing this section).
With all that said, it has been a long time since we faced each other: While we played regularly in 2015 - 2018, we have not played against each other since. Both of us stopped playing for a while. For me, I can say that the Introduction of RBY World Cup in 2023 reignited the fire for RBY OU a bit in me and I always come back to play this tour every year. I think it might be similar for him since he does the same. Still, we have never faced each other in that one.

If I write a long paragraph like that just as an introduction, it is no surpirse that facing Peasounay is very special for me and I was always hoping to some day meet him again. So when the tiers got assigned for Round 1 of Invitational and we both ended up in tier 2 the chances of us meeting were as good as they get and I can honeslty say that I was glad to be put in that situation. Fate did it's thing and we got paired. I was excited to play my friend and RBY legend again.

I knew what I had on my hands here and it was not going to be easy. But I also knew I can beat him. After all, our games were always close but historically I think I have beaten him more than he has beaten me (I am not sure though, I do not keep track). Despite everything, I did not prepare specifically or thoroughly for the matchup. My main focus was on bringing one Rhydon-, Cloyster- and Zapdos Team respectively (if possible with changing leads) and play well. I simply decided to use what I feel are currently the 3 most solid Rhydon-, Cloyster- and Zapdos-Teams respectively or at least the ones that I felt most comfortable using.

Game 1
:starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :jolteon: :venusaur: :exeggutor: :zapdos: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Starmie vs. Jolteon: Of course I know a switch to a sleeper can come here but I decide for the honest move instead of risking getting critOHKOed
T2: Rhydon vs. Venusaur: I have to make a decision what takes the Sleep Powder. I decide to keep my Rhydon because I already know about Jolteon and I believed SingToss Chansey to be the most expendable, since I can get my own sleep (or threaten it) with my Exeggutor easily against Venusaur
T4: Exeggutor vs. Venusaur: Psychic is an easy click because Jolteon Sleep Sac is very likely since I have shown Rhydon
T6: Rhydon vs. Jolteon: Rock Slide because I don't want to paralyze Exeggutor to prevent it from blocking sleep
T11: Starmie vs. Jolteon: I feel a switch is obvious and I feel confident enough to make a read. T-Wave is the pussy-play though. Either Blizzard there or play safe. T-Wave was a bit of a midground to not give away the turn completely if he does stay in
T13: Starmie vs. Snorlax: I cannot let Starmie fight Snorlax. it is too important for Tauros, switch to ReflectLax
T15: He explodes his Lax on mine. I take it. I believe it is favourable for me even though at this point I still did not really have a read on his last
T17-18: Some more pussy-plays. I was expecting his switches the way they happened but did not want to risk anything which puts me in a bit of an awkward position for T19
T19: Starmie vs. Jolteon: Look at T11. Same thing. A real Tauros predict is T-Wave
T26: Tauros vs. Zapdos: I feel okay whether or not he stays in but he outplays me there, luckily I do not get punished as Blizzard hits on T31

Game 2
:jynx: :cloyster: :starmie: :chansey: :rhydon: :tauros: VS :exeggutor: :dragonite: :victreebel: :starmie: :snorlax: :tauros:

T2: Jynx vs. Starmie: I believe a double switch to another sleeper is difficult for him (but possible). Still I decide to go Chansey, ideally on a T-Wave, blocking sleep
T20: Cloyster vs. Victreebel: Now it becomes interesting. He has a Victreebel against my Team with Cloyster, Rhydon and SurfBolt Starmie. I have to get Jynx in on it without eating Sleep Powder. For now I decide to scout his move and make the safe Chansey switch as he Razor Leafs
T22: Chansey vs. Snorlax: Nice move from him to double to Victreebel on my Cloyster.
T23: Cloyster vs. Victreebel: I go Jynx because I feel there is not a Sleep Powder coming as he did not use it the first time and I already showed my tendency to go Chansey the first time. I am correct and he reveals Swords Dance
T24: Jynx vs. Victreebel: I don't know if I can play around Hyper Beam effectively (he can predict me). I decide to just take the damage with Blizzard (hope for no miss and possibly a crit or freeze) in exchange for Jynx' life
T30: Chansey vs. Victreebel: I try to get Tauros in for free by going Cloyster. It works on T32
T39: Tauros vs. Tauros: Cloyster is worthless and I sacrifice it to go into Starmie. If this was PsyBlizz instead of SurfBolt I like my position. My opponent does not know the set though
T41: Starmie vs. Tauros: I Surf because I think it is possible for him so save Tauros and sacrifice Victreebel. T-Wave would not help in that case. I have no clue that his last is Dragonite. I believed at the time it might be a Rhydon since his team is pretty weak to Zapdos otherwise. In hindsight it makes sense for him to stay in. He needs Starmie paralyzed for Dragonite (or so he thinks)
T43: Starmie vs. Victreebel: Probably Chansey was my move. I decide for T-Wave because I wanted my Rhydon to outspeed Vic. At this point. because he fought Starmie with Tauros, I did not belive into a Rhydon last. I was thinking Articuno or something like that now and I did not want to lose my Chansey to Victreebel because it could still use Sing on Starmie later.
T44: Rhydon vs. Victreebel: I thought about Rock Slide there, hitting his "Articuno" on the switch but was afraid to miss
T46: My Tauros is EQ Rest and I lose because of it

Game 3
:alakazam: :starmie: :exeggutor: :zapdos: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :zapdos: :starmie: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Alakazam vs. Zapdos: I Seismic Toss predicting an Exeggutor Switch. I want to keep it unparalyzed to be able to click Sleep Powder with my own Exeggutor
T5: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: Unfortunately the plan does not work as he wins the speed tie and I fail to predict his Explosion. I am in a bad position now
T6: Exeggutor vs. Tauros: I think Exeggutor was his only sleeper so I sacrifice Alakazam instead of Exeggutor
T8: Snorlax vs. Tauros: I played too fast at this point, not thinking through my moves. I had a good clue on his team at that point. I figured it would be Chanseyless (probably with Alakazam and Starmie or Cloyster). I went Snorlax because I thought I would not need it for a potential Chansey. Trading Snorlax for Tauros does not help me much, though and he is probably happy about that trade. I should have gone Starmie here and then doubled to Snorlax in my opinion, forcing him to fight my Lax with something else and get more value out of my own Lax since I need to make up ground
T10: Zapdos vs. Alakazam: I need to start getting T-Waves in and am forced to fight Alakazam wth Zapdos
T12: Zapdos vs. Alakazam: I think he makes a mistake by not recovering his Alakazam. I still play off of his non-Recover on that turn and take advantage of it by bringing in Starmie, keeping Alakazam low
T14: Starmie vs. Starmie: I think my opponent can afford to use Thunderbolt if he has it but T-Wave is obviously an option. I decide to risk Zapdos, hoping for a T-Wave and get it
T15: Zapdos vs. Starmie: Zapdos survives a Blizzard and gets huge damage on Starmie, allowing me to force a speedtie to threaten a KO on Starmie with my PsyBlizz Starmie
T17: Starmie vs. Starmie: He does not want to risk the tie and sacrifces Alakazam
T18: Starmie vs. Zapdos: I need to hope for some Starmie odds here. I need to freeze Zapdos or survive the Thundebrolt (the odds are not in my favour) and get one critical hit with two tries. I do get the latter. At this point the game is in my favour and I avoid the freeze on T 23 to win

I manage to come out on top in a good set of games. Especially g2 and g3 were really close. I was overall satisfied with how I played g1 and g2. I think it could have been a 2-0 if my Tauros had the "normal" moveset. I would like to say that I learned my lesson from it immediately but I ended up bringing EQ Rest Tauros in the following two rounds as well (even though I don't think it mattered in those games) before finally adapting in the later weeks. In g3 I got the early game wrong and clicked too quickly after that. I almost got punished for it but managed to get some plays right to force my luck for the win.

ROUND 2 VS OAKDEON

In the context of trying to go on a deeper run in the tournament, week 2 was the one that felt the most important for me, because it's the first win that lets you skip a round. It was definitely the week that I put the most effort in prepping the games.
I am not that deeply involved in the RBY community these days. So I did not know too much about my next opponent, oakdeon, to be completely honest. I was warned, however, as he took out ABR in the round prior.

In my preperation I looked into his past games and noticed some tendencies I tried to exploit. Firstly, he had an unusually high (non-lead-)Starmie and Rhydon usage and fittingly favoured Jynx as a lead, which also lead to relatively low (for today's standards) Exeggutor usage. I also noticed that his Starmies (and Chanseys) were comparatively seldom carrying Thunderbolt. It felt like an ample opportunity to use a Slowbro, also diversifying my profile and keeping future opponents on their toes. As I very rarely bring Slowbro, I did not have a team ready that I felt comfortable with that had Slowbro. I do not especially like a classic ZamEggBro Team or the Laxless BroDon builds. So I decided to build a fresh one. I ended up taking MieEggDon and swapped Tauros of all things for Slowbro and modifying some movesets that I felt fitted the team as well as the opponent better. For g2 I used a Jynx-lead team as I noticed his tendency to switch leads between games from Jynx to Zam. It's the same team from g2 of Round 1 but I changed up the sets. I also had a Gengar-lead Team prepared for g3 as he really loves leading Jynx, but luckily I did not need it anymore.

Game 1
:starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :slowbro: VS :jynx: :rhydon: :starmie: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T5: Chansey vs. Chansey: I decide to use a Sing-less Chansey and trade paralysis with his Chansey which I presume does not carry Thunderbolt. As I have Slowbro, I want this paralyzed and rather be able to threaten sleep on more dangerous targets later in the game
T15: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: He decides to blow up his Lax on mine. At this point I thought my prep paid off as I anticipated his team to be JynxMieDon (presumably with T-Bolt-less Starmie). So Slowbro is looking good. I am fine with the trade
T17: Chansey vs. Rhydon: I try to get an Ice Beam in on Rhydon because Rhydon is a threat to Slowbro and also because I think there is a chance he does not want to use EQ an my (unreavealed) Egg
T22: Chansey vs. Rhydon: Nice move on his end to Rock Slide there, especially as I showed my willingness to stay in on him before. This puts pressure on Exeggutor
T34: Rhydon vs. Starmie: I want to paralyze Starmie for Slowbro so I decide to fish here, predicting his recover
T35: Rhydon vs. Starmie: Now he reads me and makes a nice Rhydon switch. This Rhydon put up a lot of pressure in this game. One disadvantage of not having a Tauros to reverse the pressure situation on Rhydon that I have to face with my team
T40: Chansey vs. Starmie: Assung my Last is Tauros he can play wrecklessly now with his Rhydon because keeping my Chansey low for his Rhydon gives him an edge in the endgame. With Slowbro last, however, his Rhydon is more important. Taking it out there would have been great
T42: Exeggutor vs. Rhydon: I did not manage to take out Rhydon with other Pokemon. And now that my pieces fall, I have to decide to overcome it with Slowbro itself (which makes clicking T-Wave with it much less free and introduces some mind games). I Explode Exeggutor predicting some switch (Starmie or Chansey) and catch his Chansey
T43: Slowbro vs. Starmie: The surprise is reavealed. I know he will go Starmie predicting my Tauros and thinking the victory is near. Slowbro ruins his day. Luckily I am able to trade twave with Starmie now and set up the endgame with Slowbro. I have to avoid FP on some crucial turns and do so, which lets me win the game
T48: Slowbro vs. Tauros: Maybe it looks weird to let Slowbro go down and risk Rhydon vs. Starmie later but I think getting crit by Tauros on Rest is worse

Game 2
:jynx: :cloyster: :starmie: :chansey: :rhydon: :tauros: VS :jynx: :starmie: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Jynx vs. Jynx: To be honest, I was going a bit all-in on him not running Jynx-lead twice in a row. Jynx was my only sleeper in this game as I liked to have boltbeam Chansey against him. Just winning the 50/50 here was big. I would have had to play without sleep otherwise, which would have been managable but without a doubt more difficult
T7: Chansey vs. Starmie: I decide to hold off on commiting to T-Wave initially, as I do not have Snorlax and am lacking information on his Chansey-moveset. So I try to get a freeze for now
T16: Tauros vs. Snorlax: EQ is a Counter Scout there. From that health on Snorlax it is not much worse than Bodyslam
T20: Starmie vs. Tauros: We have a bit of a mindgame on our hands. On one side, I do not want to click T-Wave as sleep just opened up again for me. On the other hand my Starmie is paralyzed and it is feasable for him to try breaking through with Tauros. I decide to play it safe and click T-Wave. He gives me the PAR on Tauros which I gladly take
T34: Starmie vs. Starmie: I predict him to double but am afraid to make the real play for the KO (like I did a couple of times in R1 g1). It means I still have to give up the Self-Destruct (even if I catch it with Rhydon the following turn)
T43: Exeggutor vs. Chansey: My opponent is quite behind at this point. He tries to hit my Chansey with a last-ditch-effort Explosion but I don't let him hit it and go Jynx. Now he cannot break my Chansey anymore and I win the game

My preperation for these games really paid off. Slowbro won g1 when it did not look good had I had a Tauros in its place. g2 I won the Jynx ditto and even though I did not get the freeze over the course of the game, paralyzing his Tauros paved the way to victory. I was delighted that I had jumped that hurdle, now had a week off and would continue to be in the winners bracket.

ROUND 4 VS CHUVA DE PERERECA

My opponent for Round 4 turned out to be chuva de perereca . At this point in the winners bracket there's only killers left to begin with but I thought chuva was a tough draw. When you think about the tournament and look at its participants you automatically assess the strenght of the other competitors and imagine who you think will be top contenders for the title. In my opinion chuva was definitely one of them and if I had to rank RBY OU players right now, he would be second place behind Serpi (clearly best player).

So I knew I had my work cut out for me. Still, unlike in round 2, I did not prep specifically for him. I thought it was pointless because he plays so much that the work I would have had to put into it would not have been proportional to the return. I chose a different apporach, as I looked at what I had brought so far in the tournament and noticed that is was 4 Rhydons in 5 games. Because of that, I figured he would not use Zapdos against me and I decided to bring some teams that I think are generally strong into Zapdosless but weak into Zapdos. Naturally I thought about MieEggCloy, which gets eaten alive by Zapdos but is pretty strong if it does not show up, so I locked that in for g1. Since Slowbro had done me good in the previous round, I decided to bring it back, this time with a set that had Reflect>T-Wave (which should backfire). For g3 I wanted to do something special and I tried my hands on a new Venusaur-Team that I theorized. It's probably not good but I felt it's extra strong into Rhydon Teams (even running Golem as the Ground type, which is very atypical for me) and I felt like there was a high chance those would show up.

Game 1
:starmie: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :alakazam: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :starmie: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Starmie vs. Alakazam: I use Blizzard on Alakazam because I don't want to catch a Chansey switch with T-Wave
T7-8: Starmie vs. Exeggutor: He gets the mindgames right after sleep lands and I get lucky dodging the stun spore with my own Exeggutor
T17: Chansey vs. Exeggutor: I know his Exeggutor moveset now and know my Chansey has no Explosion to fear, so I tried getting it in without getting paralyzed which happens. Ice beam damage for a 56.25% chance to get paralyzed is a good trade and I actually get a critical hit whithout even getting paralyzed, which puts me in a good position
T27: Chansey vs. Starmie: He manages to escape with his Starmie against T-Bolt Chansey and I get him on the switch with T-Wave. I managed to spread paralysis and damage very nicely and am at this point aware that I am facing a Chanseyless team
T41: Tauros vs. Tauros: I am very far ahead and think I can afford losing the Tauros ditto. Conversely, he is so far behind that he kinda has to make plays. So I think there is a good chance he did not click Hyper Beam. We'll never know, I won the speed tie
T75: Chansey vs. Starmie: He reveals Rhydon and at this point (with my last being Cloyster) there's no way he wins the game

Game 2
:exeggutor: :slowbro: :starmie: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :alakazam: :starmie: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T4-6: Exeggutor vs. Alakazam: Again he wins all the mindgames after sleep lands and we end up with my Tauros staring down his Starmie
T7: Tauros vs. Starmie: Of course, I know that Exeggutor can come in here but it's just risky to predict it here and get my Tauros paralyzed. He uses this nicely and gets Exeggutor in on my Chansey
T13: Tauros vs. Snorlax: I am fine with trading Tauros for Snorlax as Snorlax Self-Destruct is still a threat to Slowbro. I get lucky though, as I do not scout Counter and he gets me with it but the Slamroll is low and I survive
T14: Tauros vs. Snorlax: I get lucky a second turn in a row as I thought he'd let his Lax go and click Hyper Beam as he goes Starmie and gets it killed by a critical hit. Sometimes this just happens and it's what you risk by going Starmie there. Now I am in a good position
T15: Tauros vs. Tauros: I decide to switch into Snorlax. In hindsight I think it was a mistake but there were many factors I considered that lead to my decision: I want to save Tauros because it presumably outspeeds all remaining members of his Team and can get a big hit off on Exeggutor which is blocking my path with Slowbro (especially since sleep is still open for him). On the other hand, my Snorlax is Ice Beam which is mainly for hitting his Snorlax. Since that is already low, I thought I would not need Lax anymore. Also I was very tunnel visioned at this point on him running a Chanseyless Team again, making Lax even less needed. Additionally he does not know my moveset and if I am Self-Destruct, him losing Tauros in exchange for Lax is not a good trade for him in my opinion. So there was the possibility of getting free Bodyslams on his switches, trying to dance around Self-Destruct. Of course, none of that happened and I just lose Snorlax in exchange for 2 Bodyslams on Tauros. Bad trade for me and I have given away part my lead
T19: Starmie vs. Tauros: I go Starmie on Tauros and still feel good about my position because I am still completely fixated on him not having a Chansey and I remember being surprised when it came in easily on Blizzard. For some reason I did not even consider that a possibility at the time
T26: Exeggutor vs. Alakazam: I get outplayed the turns prior for being to passive and find myself pressured by his Exeggutor and also his Alakazam threatening to wake up. I decide to explode hoping for him to continue his agressive switching and aiming at Exeggutor but it fails miserably. Now I squandered the lead that KOing Starmie gifted me completely. But I have to point out that my opponent also played this section very well
T27: Tauros vs. Chansey: Hyper Beam as his Chansey KOes my Tauros is what I am aiming for, keeping Chansey low. The plan is to revenge with Chansey afterwards, let it take the sleep from Exeggutor and after force him to trade Exeggutor for Starmie (or at least get a T-Wave off) and sweep the game with ReflectBro. It is not straight forward because there is still a Self-Destruct Snorlax out of Starmie KO range but it is a very possible way
T29: Tauros vs. Chansey: As he fully paralyzes on T27 and then recovers on T28, my plan does not work out and I know he's not going to let me KO Chansey, so I predict Exeggutor to come in. No crit or para for me though
T30: Tauros vs. Exeggutor: I contemplated going for damage which might have been better (with the chance to KO with a crit) but I go Starmie as he reaveals Mega Drain. Bad news for me and my win condition, which is Slowbro
T31: Starmie vs. Exeggutor: I fail to predict his Chansey and lose momentum. From now on I cannot be agressive anymore and decide to stall
T42: Starmie vs. Chansey: He decides to click T-Wave on my Starmie as I get in Chansey. Now I unexpectedly have a sleepblocker. His Snorlax is dangerous but I think this gave me a chance
T77: Chansey vs. Chansey: I make another questionable move. His Chansey does not have the PP advantage on mine, still I want to get an edge on his Chansey in the stallwar and get my Starmie paralyzed, trying to sneak it in. My Chansey could have fought this out, at least so long my Soft-Boiled PP were high enough
T81: Starmie vs. Snorlax: Next questionable move by me. I go Tauros, hoping he'd Self-Destruct. But probably staying with Starmie was the move. Tauros was still a win condition. Now it's looking really bad for me because Slowbro can never sweep as long as Exeggutor can hit it with Sleep Powder and Mega Drain
T92: Chansey vs. Chansey: My opponent used Counter or T-Wave like 10 turns in a row only to use Seismic Toss on the very turn I want to sneak in Starmie to recover it. Things turn from bad to worse
T94: Starmie vs. Tauros: I have to reaveal Slowbro and get some shots to put his Chansey in danger but he escapes in time
T101: Slowbro vs. Exeggutor: Now my opponent makes a mistake. He clicks Mega Drain predicting me to not stay in with Bro. At this point I am kind of desperate and just go for the sleep miss on this turn (possibly to catch an Explosion on the following turn). It could have been dangerous for him had my Slowbro had T-Wave but he got the crit, nullifying the damage done
T107: Chansey vs. Snorlax: Another questionable play by my opponent. I think he had no need to go for Self-Destruct there. Could have easily chosen a more patient route
T108: Chansey vs. Tauros: He gets the critical hit immediately and the game finally ends with my loss

Game 3
:alakazam: :cloyster: :venusaur: :starmie: :golem: :tauros: VS :chansey: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :starmie: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Alakazam vs. Chansey: He surprises me with a Chansey lead. I do not want Alakazam take the sleep since I don't have many options of sponging Special hits anyway and with Alakazam asleep I'm too limited (as we have seen in g1 when his Alakazam on a Chanseyless Team got slept). I decide to sacrifice Golem
T2: Golem vs. Chansey: Sing is an inaccurate move. My Golem gets to use Explosion. I thought if he risks Sing, his Chansey goes down on a miss. Also Exeggutor was a move on his part and exploding on that is what I like with this team. Chansey goes down because Sing is an inaccurate move
T3: Venusaur vs. Exeggutor: I predict him to go into Exeggutor and bring in Venusaur to get the faster sleep
T6: Cloyster vs. Starmie: I outplay him on that turn, staying in with Cloyster on Starmie and using Blizzard on a predicted switch to either Exeggutor (predicting me to switch) or Rhydon (predicting an Explosion). The latter happens but Rhydon survives
T7: I clicked my move very fast. It was clear he'd switch back to Starmie which would be KOed by Explosion at this range. So I clicked it without thinking too much about it. Now I outplayed him again but I still have to face the sleep from Exeggutor now but I have a plan...
T9: Alakazam vs. Exeggutor: This time, finally, I was the one getting the mindgame right after sleep landed (after he got me in the previous two games). I make a ballsy move and go Tauros on Exeggutor as he went Snorlax to pressure Alakazam. I love to see that matchup since, if I can weaken Snorlax, my Starmie is looking fantastic
T12: Tauros vs. Snorlax: I go Venusaur on either Rest or Self-Destruct. Venusaur survives which gives me a free switch to Starmie afterwards which ultimately wins the me the game

I beat one of the strongest competitors in the tournament, so I was very happy. I was happy that my overall plan worked (I brought Zapdos-weak Teams and he never brought a Zapdos). I think g1 showed the weakness of his Team. I am not a fan of ZamMieEggDon exactly because of that weakness to BoltBeam Chansey. Surely RNG helped but it got devestating for him really quickly because the team lacks the necessary resistence. I think g2 was the worst game of my tournament so far and I am not happy with how I played it. The game decided to give me a lead and this is when you have to strike. I let my opponent take it away from me which is not what I expect of myself. g3 was a very volatile game because of the teamchoice I made. Aided by Sing's unreliability and some ballsy moves I got the win with my favourite Pokemon.

ROUND 6 VS BEE OR SOMETHING

Going into the next round, I got paired with BeeOrSomething . From my perspective a newer player but I knew from his introduction that he had made a name for himself in several RBY Tournaments in the last year. Also we met 2 times already in 2025 prior to this, once in RBYWC where I won and once in Global Championship where he won. He struck me as a player who likes to play agressively and his teamchoices reflected that. I had a feeling of what level to expect from him. I was alarmed for sure since he came off of wins against good players like Sceptross and my fellow Germans Larry and Serpi.

Still, I was full of confidence from the run I was on and from our previous encounters I took away that he was good but that I could definitely beat him if I play to my capabilities. Additionally, bo5 was starting and it also meant that if I won I would be guaranteed top 3. I just went into this battle with the mindset that I would not let anyone take this away from me. I did not have much time for preperation but it is less important in bo5 anyway. I like bringing a team with a different lead in situations like this, just to keep my opponent (and potential future opponents who like to scout me) guessing what is coming. So I prepped a different Jynx-lead team with Zapdos this time for g1, an Alakazam-lead team with BackJynx because I like the idea and wanted to bring that all tournament anyway. For g3 it was trusted MieEggDon. I had a Zapdos-lead team for g4 and a Gengar-lead team for g5 ready but did not need to reveal them.

Game 1
:jynx: :zapdos: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T19: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: First interesting turn. His Snorlax gets a critical hit on mine and it outspeeds me due to my Snorlax having been paralyzed by his Chansey on T8. I did not want to risk losing Snorlax to Hyper Beam here so I try to absorb it with Exeggutor for a lack of better option. This was a bit hasty by me. There was a argument to be made for just risking him having Hyper Beam (and also clicking it) because switching out (EQ-)Snorlax at 21% means it will be very difficult to get any more value out of it later in the battle. Anyway, we end up with Exeggutor on Exeggutor but both of us have already landed sleep
T20: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: I fear a Stun Spore coming my way. Even though I have Stun Spore myself I decide to go out into Jynx scaring him out with Blizzard as he boldly clicks Psychic (I think eating a Stun Spore from me in exchange for a Psychic is not worth it for him).
T21: Jynx vs. Exeggutor: I just decide to click the Blizzard as he stays in to Psychic (probably predicting a Snorlax-Double on my part?). A crucial mistake from him, as I turn out to get the OHKO with a critical hit, especially given his teams relative reliance on Exeggutor to handle opposing Exeggutor
T23: Tauros vs. Snorlax: He revenge kills my Jynx with Snorlax. I have a decision to make what to send it. Nothing I have will prevent Snorlax from clicking Self-Destruct if he has it. It is an awkward situation because if I start dancing around boom and go for Snorlax or Chansey as he just attacks, I lose a lot of of ground. I decide to take the mathematical approach: Just go Tauros and click Bodyslam hoping for the crit. I don't get it and he reaveals Hyper Beam.
T24: Tauros vs. Tauros: It does not look good for me at this point because I now think that he has a Rhydon in the back against my Zapdos and I still need to break his Chansey somehow. I cannot afford to lose Tauros here, that is certain, so I sacrifice low-health Snorlax and bring in Exeggutor. The plan to break Chansey is now to try breaking it with special drops and FPs which I set up that way.
T30: Tauros vs. Chansey: Chansey escapes my Exeggutor and I cannot lose HP on it since I need it for Tauros still. So I have to use Tauros agressively (introducing Zapdos here only helps me if I win a lot of mindgames in a row plus it reveals his advantageous position even clearer to him). The Bodyslam does not crit but I get the FP which leaves Chansey low. Now my Exeggutor all of a sudden looks really threatening and I manage to win the game because it avoids FPs and Tauros does not choke against Rhydon

Game 2
:alakazam: :jynx: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Alakazam vs. Starmie: I switch to Jynx because it can sleep Starmie. It also covers a switch to a sleeper which does not happen
T7: Chansey vs. Chansey: I get my Chansey slept without paralyzing his Chansey. Not a good start for me as Jynx has also taken some damage
T10: Snorlax vs. Tauros: Luckily I have a Counter-Snorlax here to bail me out and do some massive damage to Tauros while still remaining healthy enough to get value later
T13: Tauros vs. Snorlax: On the turn prior, instead of taking the chance with Tauros on Tauros or switching to Snorlax, he decided to sacrifice sleeping Starmie, probably expecting me to run a team with Jynx and Sing Chansey as the only sleepers. In any case, now it actually comes in handy that I did not get to paralyze Chansey at the start because sleep is open for me. And even though it does not feel great to switch Exeggutor in on Bodyslam, I feel I cannot get it in safer. So I eat a critical hit on the way in but get to sleep his Exeggutor
T23: Exeggutor vs. Chansey: After a bit of dancing around, I crucially catch his Chansey with Explosion. Alakazam looks threatening now
T24: Snorlax vs. Rhydon: I still didn't know his last and feel Snorlax is the safest bet as I carry Self-Destruct. Rhydon is not what I want to see on that turn and my Snorlax goes down to a crit without being able to get a hit in
T25: Tauros vs. Rhydon: A lot of little, impactful decisions in this game. I could have sent in Alakazam and hoped to dodge a para from Bodyslam plus getting the 2HKO on Rhydon (with rolls/crits/drops). In any case, Alakazam vs. Rhydon is not comfortable for either of us. My opponent's Snorlax' moveset is important here and I don't know if it is the same as last game. I decide to send in Tauros. I know he will sacrifice Exeggutor and bring in Snorlax after. But I think I have some chaces to outplay him with that approach and Tauros crits can create a situation where Alakazam can sweep
T27-28: Tauros vs. Snorlax: I try to bait a Self-Destruct but he does not seem to have it. If that's true I can bring in Tauros after and damage Snorlax further, likely resulting in the Alakazam vs. Rhydon 1v1 in the end. If he decides to kill with Rhydon, it gives me significant wake-odds with Chansey
T33: Tauros vs. Rhydon: Unfortunately Chansey does not wake in time and I now have to face a Rhydon with a Sub up. Still if his Snorlax really does not carry Self-Destruct the situation does not change much for me. It would be Alakazam vs. Snorlax (with no chance to naturally 2HKO for me, though. Tauros does what it does and gets a critical hit. As it also wins the speedtie vs his Tauros I walk away with the victory with Alakazam

:starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :jynx: :zapdos: :starmie: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T7: Chansey vs. Chansey: This time my Chansey gets to sleep his. Even though I get paralyzed, I am happy with the start: Chansey asleep and Jynx too with 0 turns burned
T10: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: This time it's my Snorlax that crits his and forces his Rest. This allows me to pressure with Exeggutor. Unfortunately I did not predict his Rest correctly which would have been even better
T25: Chansey vs. Snorlax: Nice move on his part. I try to predict Rest or Self-Destruct as he uses EQ on my Rhydon-switch, damaging it heavily with a critical hit
T37: Snorlax vs. Starmie: I try to break Starmie with Hyper Beam Snorlax and break through it with a critical hit. He reveals Zapdos on the following turn and I get the win

I win the set 3-0 but it was closer than the result implies. g1 I had to overcome the Zapdos vs. Rhydon matchup and an early Snorlax crit against me. But managed to do so with a bit of luck of my own. g2 was close and in the end I had fast Pokemon to always give me odds for the win but it involved a Tauros speed tie in the endgame which, while not being solely decisive, obviously helped. g3 I was the one with the Rhydon against his Zapdos. Anyway, I got to top 3 against an opponent who beat good players along the way and my confidence grows from every victory.

ROUND 8 VS KAZ

We're in the Finals of the winners bracket. My opponent for this round is Kaz . This guy needs no introduction. He is one of the best players in the game without any doubt and is famous for bringing very creative teams. Bringing stuff like this is one thing but being successful with them is another and Kaz was the first guy to bring Chanseyless teams consistently and win with them. In that sense he is one of the most influential players of this metagame and I am not ashamed to say that I learned a thing or two watching him in the last few years. Him and I don't go back quite as long as me and Peasounay but we also have a history from way back in the PokemonPerfect days. I managed to win a lot vs. him back then but it was never easy. However, the one encounter that that sticks out to me is a loss. It was in RBY Invitational IV in 2023. He beat me in the first round bringing Venusaur-Teams. Luckily I was able to get revenge in the same tournament in some later round when we met again. So here we are, meeting in RBY Invitational for the third time.

Prep-wise this one was a bit of a mix of my prep vs. chuva from round 4 and Peasounay from round 1. Chuva, because Kaz, like him, plays an awful lot and there's just so much material that it would take a lot of effort and time to scout him. I typically do not have the capacities to prep like that, so I decided to not specifically prep for him which brings me to my prep vs. Peasounay, because I just wanted to use solid teams, nothing opponent-specific. I decided that I wanted to use each of the Ground-Water-Electric OUs once. This time though, it was not important to me to use different leads. So I just used teams with Starmie-Lead (the best lead imo) and Cloyster/Rhydon/Zapdos in g1/2/3 respectively. For g4 I had something unusual prepared. It was a Chanseyless team with Cloyster, Zapdos and Alakazam, but with Tauros as the lead. This team I actually picked up on the ladder during the tournament when I was occasionally practicing/warming up for tournament games. I met someone using it there like 3 times and I kept losing to it. I don't know who it was but for all I knew it could well have been Kaz himself (he actually brought the same team in this very series in g2 but with Zapdos as the lead). For g5 I had another Gengar-Lead team prepped, but did not need it.

Game 1
:starmie: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :starmie: :alakazam: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T3: Chansey vs. Starmie: This is a situation where my opponent has no safe play. He does not know what to expect from Chansey. Since Sing has been very established in the last couple of years, Starmies have been staying in against Chansey to eat Sing. I predict that he will do just that and get the T-Wave off with my BoltBeam Chansey
T4: Chansey vs. Starmie: He should respect Thunderbolt and does so: I predict a switch and catch his Exeggutor with another T-Wave
T5: Chansey vs. Exeggutor: I just Ice Beam to get the most damage before Exeggutor sleeps me. I think it's a good risk/reward for me: I presume his Starmie is not Thunderbolt so I don't need Chansey to wall it. Granted, I'd have a bit of a harder time against his Chansey because I'd have to paralyse it with Starmie or Exeggutor, but I also have a RestLax and 2 Explosions so I should be able to handle it. Plus there are odds he's not going to get the sleep easily because of FP and misschance.
T11: Chansey vs. Chansey: Indeed, his Exeggutor struggles to get the sleep and I get to trade paralysis with his Chansey. I now have a good lead and want to make it count by pressuring his Chansey with Snorlax. He catches my switch with a nice T-Wave on Lax and avoids any damage from my Snorlax. This was the beginning of my demise in this game.
T14: Chansey vs. Starmie: He could pressure me on this turn with a Snorlax switch which is what I try to anticipate and go Starmie but it does not happen
T16-17: Chansey vs. Snorlax: My Chansey get paralyzed twice in a row and now it is paralyzed and low. I have to reveal Cloyster against unparalyzed Snorlax. My lead is fading
T20: Cloyster vs. Starmie: Since my Chansey is low I cannot risk switching in right away. Switching to Starmie might catch myself a T-Wave. So I decide to go for Clamp to get a "safe" switch-out. I miss and get KOed by a critical hit. Now I am in a bad position
T25: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: My opponent is playing his lead nicely. He gets Alakazam in on predicted Rest and applies pressure
T28: I tried a chain switch to get my Chansey back but his Alakazam gets the critical hit for the KO. From there we go through the motions but he game is basically over now and I lose

Game 2
:starmie: :rhydon: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :zapdos: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Starmie vs. Zapdos: I have Rhydon but decide to go Chansey. I generally think that going Chansey and (hopefully) getting paralyzed is better than going Rhydon right away. (With Rhydon you don't really have that good of a play imo since you do not want to click Bodyslam on incoming Exeggutor without having slept something. Rock Slide does damage but gives away momentum and switching out, predicting an Exeggutor-switch can backfire if the Zapdos user anticipates it.) He uses Thunder, aiming for the OHKO if Starmie stays in, so I do not get the PAR on my Chansey as I wanted.
T3: Chansey vs. Zapdos: I am sure he will bring in Exeggutor on predicted Soft-Boiled so I decide to make a risky move, predicting that - I use Sing on his paralyzed Zapdos. The reward is very high if I land it as his Exeggutor sleeps on a Zapdos Team against my Rhydon. Sing lands.
T6: Tauros vs. Exeggutor: My effort with Sing on t3 turned out to have been in vain as Exeggutor wakes up early on t5 as I went to Tauros to put pressure on. Sleep is now free for him and I decide to just go for damage/freeze or miss chance and click Blizzard. Nothing special happens and Tauros gets slept in exchange for 30% damage
T9: Exeggutor vs. Zapdos: Nice move from my opponent. A switch on my part was obvious and even though I did not reveal Rhydon yet, he goes into Exeggutor. This lets him get chip damage on my own Exeggutor and force me into mindgames with Sleep Powder vs Psychic
T12: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: the pressure on my Exeggutor is adding up and I really need to get my own sleep. He lets me get it on his Exeggutor even though I was at -1 special and Zapdos would have been an easy switch. A crucial mistake from my opponent in my opinion.
T15: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: I am already figuring that my opponent is running a Chansey-less team and I expect his Snorlax to not carry Reflect and rather be 4 Attacks. I do not want to give him the boom on my Snorlax so I decide to go Rhydon. This would catch a boom if he goes for it. It also forces him to either reveal more information about his team or lose Snorlax to Rhydon in exchange for damage. With Zapdos paralyzed and at 72%, I feel I do not need Rhydon as much as I need my own Snorlax.
T20: Starmie vs. Tauros: He gives me the T-Wave on Tauros with Starmie. This reaveals clearly now that he does not have a Chansey
T30: Starmie vs. Alakazam: He decided to fight Starmie with Alakazam after it already crippled Tauros (in exchange for getting paralyzed itself). I survive and get the T-Wave also on Alakazam. I think things are looking good for me now especially with my Snorlax alive and his Snorlax gone.
T36: Snorlax vs. Alakazam: I got his Alakazam low with Surf and go Snorlax on the Recover-turn, even getting in on an FP. Now he is forced to give up a Pokemon or reveal his last. He reveals Cloyster. With full information on his Team now I can formulate a plan for winning this game: Cloyster is definitely dangerous for my Team. Number one priority now is to keep Starmie and Chansey high on HP to not lose to Clamp. Even if they are paralyzed, between the both of them (and Clamp's accuracy) it will be hard for him to make real progress, especially since his Tauros is paralyzed. Second priority is to wake up Tauros. I have Thunderbolt on it and if it is awake, I have a way to actually threaten a KO. I will try to burn sleep turns with Tauros here and there on Cloyster when it either uses Clamp or Rest.
T42: Starmie vs. Alakazam: I could have pressured him with Snorlax on the predicted Recover (which he did not even go for) again but priority is to get Chansey's HP back.
T45-46: Snorlax vs. Alakazam: Here I really wanted to use Hyper Beam because I was smelling him to stay in. But I did not have the balls to go for it (since Slam is fine too and way better if he goes Cloyster). I Slam the Alakazam instead of KOing it but do not get punished because FP odds kick in and I get to KO Alakazam the turn after.
T56: Starmie vs. Zapdos: Snorlax instead of Rhydon because of Drillpeck(-crit).
T58: Snorlax vs. Closyter: I use Rest on predicted Rest. Had I had Self-Destruct, I would have used it there but I am Hyper Beam. Keeping my Snorlax healthy is letting me keep control of the game
T62: Chansey outspeeds Cloyster now so I take advantage of that and heal it safely. Things are looking really good for me now.
T74: Chansey vs. Cloyster: I am confident in predicting his Rest. At this point I am trying to implement the second part of my plan which is waking up Tauros (not on Clamps anymore as this can get dangerous as seen on T47-54). In hindsight there were other paths available for me here: I could have played out the matchup with just Chansey. It seemed like my Seismic Toss PP were high enough to outstall Cloyster's Rest at this rate. Or I could have gone Rhydon to basically force a KO. Rhydon is risky in case I mispredict Rest, though. There was one part of the equation I was missing here: His Tauros was carrying Rest. I did not know it at this point and played it as if it was not a threat anymore. An oversight that would go on to make this game much more difficult than it needed to be.
T98: Chansey vs. Cloyster: Again I am still too tunnel-visioned on my plan to wake up Tauros and go into it on a predicted Rest even though the Rest PP to Seismic Toss PP ratio is even better than it was on T74 due to Snorlax doing damage. This time though, his Tauros is not paralyzed anymore and at 70%, giving him actual options to pressure my sleeping Tauros which is exactly what ends up happening since my Tauros does not wake up.
T100-101: Tauros vs. Tauros: I fail to read the situation correctly and burn the sleep turn with Tauros on t99 instead of going out into Snorlax or Starmie, letting my opponent apply pressure to my team he should not have been able to apply. I am still not giving up on my (T-Bolt-)Tauros and decide to switch to Snorlax, bluffing boom as my last move. It was a dangerous move and I had no safe moves as his unparalyzed Tauros can break my Team now with a bit of RNG. Luckily, he is indeed scared of Self-Destruct taking out his Tauros (which would have almost surely resulted in his loss) and goes Cloyster. I think he could have had a read on me not carrying the move as I did not go for it on T58. In my opinion if he reads my set correctly he should have forced the issue with Tauros there.
T114: Chansey vs. Cloyster: I still try to wake up Tauros, which is insane. It just did not even cross my mind in the heat of the battle that my Chansey could easily outstall Cloyster's Rest. Usually when you think about outstalling Cloyster's moves it's Clamp or Blizzard, so this is an unusual situation and it just did not occur to me.
T118: Starmie vs. Zapdos: My Tauros did not wake up but I managed to survive the Tauros pressure one more time (this time with Starmie). I am now facing a Zapdos that can OHKO me with a 70% accurate move. I decide to go for Blizzard anyway. There were a lot of factors as to why I did:
1. He was adamant on using Drill Peck in this situation before and there are other factors making it likely here as well imo
a) letting in my Rhydon here (Egg and Cloy asleep) forces him to either give up a KO when he is already behind on Pokemon or lets me damage his Tauros (putting it in range of Snorlax/Tauros Hyper Beam, Exeggutor Psychic and potentially Starmie Surf) and
b) my Starmie has shown Surf, which means he is likely expecting Thunderbolt as the 4th move. That means that even if he Drill Pecks, he does not have to fear massive damage coming from Starmie in return from Blizzard
2. Even if he goes for the Electric move, he has to either crit a Thunderbolt or hit a Thunder in order to get the KO
3. Starmie has a high chance to critical hit. If I get the critical hit, it does not even matter what he clicked.
4. Cloyster has not burned a Sleep turn yet and my own Tauros has burned 5 turns already. Even if my Starmie goes down, Cloyster is not immediately threatening. It gives my Tauros further chances to wake up and force a Tauros ditto if nothing else. Opposing Tauros can become dangerous, but it has to avoid a paralysis from Chansey still
Point 3. happens and I just get the crit to kill.
T119-120: Starmie vs. Exeggutor: I think my opponent has not quite realized that my Starmie is indeed Blizzard as he sends out Exeggutor first exposing it to a Blizzard which does not happen due to FP. This did not matter anymore but I thought it was a funny moment. Games are long and mentally draining. It happens. He switches the turn after, realizig Starmie cannot touch Cloyster. It means he will get a boom on either Starmie or Chansey eventually but that does not matter as long as the other one is high enough on HP to get the T-Wave off on Tauros.
T125: Chansey vs. Cloyster: Rest-predict again. This time going into Exeggutor to force an Exeggutor trade. At this point I have too much material and the most dangerous thing is his Exeggutor potentially taking out one of Starmie or Chansey.
T130: Tauros vs. Cloyster: Tauros finally wakes up which ultimately increases my winning odds dramatically, even in case the opposing Tauros avoids paralysis. Fittingly, it is the Pokemon delivering the final blow for the win on T147

Game 3
:starmie: :zapdos: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :alakazam: :starmie: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1-2: Starmie vs. Alakazam: I have Double-Edge on my Exeggutor so I am happy with paralyzing Alakazam. I do want to avoid paralyzing Chansey, though. So I scout his move on t1 and commit to T-Wave on t2 and land it on Alakazam
T7: Snorlax vs. Chansey: I am running a Chansey-less team and take the opportunity to get rid of his Chansey right away. It is in the way of my Alakazam and Zapdos
T8: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: We enter into a phase where there are a lot of mindgames around Sleep Powder. I have Double-Edge but it's risky to click it on his Sleep Powder. Starmie would be safe (unless he has Mega Drain) but also forfeits momentum if he goes Alakazam. I decide for the midground play and click Sleep Powder, granting me a 50/50 if he decides to do the same but also not losing too much momentum if he goes for the safe switch into Zam. A questionable move. If I play it the way I do (sacrificing Snorlax) I should try to take full advantage because I lack the option of pressuring his Alakazam with Snorlax
T10: Exeggutor vs. Alakazam: I pressure Alakazam with Double-Edge and get the FP. I predict him to switch to Exeggutor and click Sleep Powder against paralyzed Alakazam. It misses. Fair play, it's what I deserved after not pulling the trigger on T8
T17: Tauros vs. Alakazam: After I make a couple of harmless moves, he escapes my pressure and I try to keep it up with an agressive Tauros switch, getting in on Alakazam as it FPs. He escapes the match-up by going into Starmie, reversing the pressure situation in his favour as I am now the one who has to run
T19: Starmie vs. Starmie: Being Chansey-less makes it a bit awkward to play around opposing Starmie (as we have seen in reverse in g2) so I try to sneak in Alakazam but he gets me with a T-Wave on the switch. Nice move.
T27: Zapdos vs. Starmie: After a couple of Zam on Mie Stall, I get Zapdos in on -1 Special Starmie which earns me the KO on his Alakazam
T28: Zapdos vs. Snorlax: This was a very tough turn for me. I took a lot of the timer on this turn and ultimatley had to decide for something under a bit of time pressure. Imo I have two options here: First one is trying to play around Snorlax Self-Destruct which means probably using Thunderbolt once (seeing what RNG occurs for both of us) and then predicting a Self-Destruct on the following turn potnetially or secondly, going Tauros immediately and just trade Tauros for massive damage on Snorlax (aiming to leave it in OHKO range of Zapdos Thunderbolt). It is difficult to decide, especially not knowing his Snorlax moveset. I ended up just attacking with Zapdos and see where the dice would fall. Still not sure if this was correct as it exposed my main win condition (Zapdos) but his Snorlax would force a tribute either way
T29: Zapdos vs. Snorlax: I got lucky and paralysed his Snorlax with Thunderbolt while dodging paralysis from Bodyslam myself. Not a likely outcome but when the game gives it to you, you gotta reassess the situation. Starmie switch was now an option for me, which is what I went for
T33: Tauros vs. Snorlax: His Snorlax beat my Starmie but I managed to put it in Hyper Beam range. I decide to not go for Hyper Beam, though, and my oponent makes me pay for it, getting huge damage with Self-Destruct on my Tauros. He got a lot more out of his Snorlax than I was hoping for but sometimes it's just how it goes when your decisions are not on point.
T34-36: Tauros vs. Tauros: I still have a chance to win because Zapdos is really dangerous for him. But I have to be precise from now on and have to make my Zapdos count. It was on this turn that I tried to figure out the plan for exactly that, so I took some timer to figure it out. The plan from here on was: Step one: force the Exeggutor vs Tauros match-up and threaten sleep. Step two: get Zapdos in on his Starmie-switch. Step three: Drill Peck into his Exeggutor-siwtch. If it works out the way I planned it, it means that his Exeggutor cannot explode on my Zapdos anymore, meaning that he would have to use his Tauros in order to beat it. This would make my own Alakazam and Exeggutor too much to handle for his (SurfBolt-)Starmie and crippled Exeggutor. After figuring that out, I contemplated saving Tauros on t34 or not. I thought Tauros might still be important, especially in the event that my Zapdos gets paralyzed so I decided to go Exeggutor on Bodyslam instead of just going for the Tauros speed tie. Maybe this was unnecessary but it felt worth the risk to me at the time to preserve that little bit of a sefety net. My plan ended up working and eventually won me the game

Game 4
:tauros: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :zapdos: VS :jynx: :starmie: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros:

T1: Tauros vs. Jynx: Great start as I get the critslam for the OHKO
T2: Tauros vs. Exeggutor: Now I am very far ahead, especially since I am running yet another Chansey-less team that can push such an advantage without the momentum-loss that comes with Chansey. I am already a little bit excited because I can smell the victory of the set. But I had to pace myslef here and make sure to not get ahead of myself. So I took the timer to figure out what to sacrifice to sleep. This time I decided to sacrifice Alakazam
T4: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: I fail to predict Explosion as he wins the speed tie. But it is alright since my Exeggutor is unparalyzed and alive
T5: Tauros vs. Exeggutor: I assume that he does not have any more sleepers as he already showed Jynx and Exeggutor so I sacrifice sleeping Alakazam in order to retain Exeggutor's Explosion
T7: Cloyster vs.Tauros: Full health Cloyster will force out Tauros. He must have something in the back that can take the Blizzard (Starmie/Chansey/Alakazam) so I predict that and go into my 4 Attacks Snorlax which can trade favourably for me vs. all of them. If his Blizzard switch is Cloyster, I have a Cloyster of my own to answer that. It turned out to be Starmie staring down my Snorlax
T9: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: My Snorlax-double gets rewarded with a nice critical hit on his Snorlax coming in. We have a speedtie on our hands and I am taking the opportunity to go for a Hyper Beam. He wins the speed tie but only uses Bodyslam as his Snorlax goes down
T10: Snorlax vs. Tauros: My lead is just getting bigger. I decide to not fuck around with a Bodyslam and just explode right away. Rightfully so, as he gets the critical hit. I even get the lucky OHKO on Tauros, meaning I do not even have to revenge with my own Tauros
T11: Zapdos vs. Alakazam: T-Wave is surely incoming but unparalysed Zapdos is great here. Cloyster is relatively free on T-Wave as it is slower than both of the opposing Pokemon anyway and Explosion the turn after is free
T14: Zapdos vs. Starmie: After the boom Zapdos did not get to KO the Starmie due to an FP. I predict him to try to save Starmie in that case and T-Wave his Alakazam on the switch
T15: Zapdos vs. Alakazam: There is an argument to be made for Drill Peck and then going Exeggutor, cleaning the game after with Tauros and/or paralyzed Zapdos. But I was too scared of RNG ruining my win so I wanted to avoid damage on Zapdos to make it as hard as possible for Starmie to KO Zapdos (we have seen what it can do to pre-damaged Zapdos in g2). So I decide to go Exeggutor on the FP-chance / Psychic survive chance but he correctly clicks Seismic Toss and brekas through. I thought, fresh Tauros would beat pre-paralyszed Alakazam and even if it loses to Starmie after, Zapdos (at full) has a good chance to win. Tauros shows what it's made off, KOing his second and third Pokemon of the battle for the win

I have managed to beat the next strong opponent in a best of 5. I was especially happy because I managed to turn around a 0-1 deficit into a 3-1 win. Decisive for that was that I did not lose my composure after conceding g1 even if I had a good start to that game. I think especially g2 was very interesting and despite being too tunnel visioned in this one, I am still proud of how I won it. I made a bold play in the beginning that only got half the reward I hoped for and ended up playing with a sleeping Tauros. Beating a Cloyster Team with MieEggDon is not that easy (especially if your Tauros which techs for it is asleep and your Starmie cannot apply pressure to it as well). But fighting Snorlax the way I did proved correct and was hugely important plus I managed to find a way around Cloyster that included implementing a long-term plan when it would have been easy to be agressive and potentially falling into the trap. It's not a situation I am in often and I had to come up with in in-battle, which is always sweet. G3 involved finding a way to maximize Zapdos potential in order to win which is also not always easy. G4 was obviously helped by the turn one but I also kept it together which was a step up from my games vs chuva, where I gave away the lead in g2. I know my opponent in the Grand Finals would be either Kaz or Genesis7. So I knew there was a good chance of meeting Kaz again. But with this victory I was confident to beat him once more, should it come to it.

GRAND FINALS VS KAZ

It's time for the Grand Finals. In the weeks leading up to the finals I tried not to think too much ahead about which players I might be facing but rather tried to just focus on the game ahead. But I would lie if I were to say that it was never on my mind at all. I was initially hoping for a finals against Serpi because I think it would have been epic to prove myself against the best RBY OU player in a setting like this. After week 8 though, it was clear to be Genesis7 or Kaz. In that case I was preferring Genesis7, simply because I think it's nicer to play a different opponent. In the end, my opponent would turn out to be Kaz again.

Regarding my preperation, I actually put in a lot of effort this time. It was the finals after all and I wanted to win it, ideally avoiding a decisive second set. The timing of the finals was perfect as well, asI had a 2 week vacation leading up to it. I was gone for the first 1.5 weeks, completely taking a (mental) break from all things Pokemon-related as well. And I came back with a refreshed battery and had a couple of days of vacation left which meant enough free time to prep the finals. So I made an extensive scout of Kaz' latest usage statistics and Teams he likes to use. In terms of Teams, he varies so much that I could not see a clear preference to exploit. Also in terms of leads he uses just about everything (even the electric types) to the extent that there is nothing standing out as noticable.
In terms of Pokemon-usage, there was (unsurprisingly) a comparitively low Chansey-usage (compensated by a very high back-Alakazam usage). In terms of the Ground- / Water- / Electric-types of RBY OU, his usage was high on Cloyster and low on Rhydon as well as normal on Zapdos relative to each other and to the current metagame as a whole. Also noticable was a relatively high Jolteon-usage overall. His usage of back-Jynx was eye-catching as well.
Which brings me to his movesets: On his Jynxes he overly used Bodyslam over Psychic which was interesting. Also his Tauroses were almost never showing EQ but frequently (as I had to experience in my g2 of Round 8 vs him) Rest. So I figured his standard is to drop EQ for Rest. In general he likes Rest on "unusual" Pokemon as his Exeggutors also carried the move way more than average. This does not go for his Snorlaxes, however, as they tended to be 4 attacks way more than average. I think in this regard he is once again a player already pushing the metagame forward with those choices. I believed his Starmies to be relatively high on Surf still for the current metagame and consequently lower on Blizzard but he made up for it a bit by using more BlizzBolt Starmie than usual.

So what Team-choices emerged for me from my findings?
His tendency to drop Chansey combined with his preferred Snorlax movesets meant I was okay with running offensive Snorlaxes myself and back-Alakazam looked good as well to exploit any Snorlax-trades against Chanseyless teams. Also his EQ-less Tauroses meant that I wanted to bring Gengar at least once. High Cloyster and low Rhydon meant I wanted to use Zapdos a lot and rather avoid using Rhydon myself. Strarmie is almost an auto-include on my teams, it's often too good to pass up. I think all this combined made it so that I ended up dropping Chansey on all of my teams as I also genuinely believe that the future for Zapdos-teams is going the Chanseyless route.
I chose to bring Gengar lead instantly in g1. I had not brought a Gengar-lead all tournament (if you haven't noticed, I am not the biggest believer) but you need to show it sometimes and I had Gengar-lead-teams prepared for g3 of round 2, g5 of round 6 and g5 of round 8 without having to ever use them. So it was the Gengar-lead boom offense team in g1 and the Chanseyless Zapdos team for g2 and g3 but with the lead (and some movesets) changed between games. For g4 I built a Venusaur team. I would have done that regardless the scout because I just don't want to miss a chance of winning the biggest tournament with my favourite Pokemon. I did the same 8 years ago when I also used it in the winning game of the finals of Fuchsia Cup. It was a similar situation as it was a double elimination tournament which was also invitation-based (it were less participants but the ones that got invited had to earn their invite with tournament vitctories over the course of the year, so the players in it were elite). Coincidentally, the signs for using Venusaur in this series were even quite favorable with the high Cloyster usage and his Starmies being SurfBolt often. I also think this Venusuar Team is more solid than the one I brought vs chuva in round 4 and is obviously more modern than the one from 2017. For g5 I had yet another Gengar-lead team prepared but once again did not need to use it.

Game 1
:gengar: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :jynx: :alakazam: :exeggutor: :chansey: :snorlax: :tauros:

T5: Cloyster vs. Jynx: My Gengar fails to sleep Jynx and I lack a good response. But since his Jynxes usually did not carry Psychic I felt safe, clicking Clamp to chip it. He reaveals Psychic. Bad start for me
T10: Cloyster vs. Jynx: As the team lacks Chansey and Starmie, my switch-in now is Alakazam and it gets frozen immediately. I am far behind now and need to get a lot of turns right and some luck back if I want to win the game
T22: Exeggutor vs. Jynx: I predict Exeggutor but Stun Spore is not enough as it just gives him his own Stun Spore and just trading it on Exeggutors won't make up any ground for me, so I go Cloyster to try to make something work with chances for crits and freezes
T25-26: Cloyster vs. Alakazam: I predict him to use T-Wave and I think I cannot bring Exeggutor in on it because I need to force a trade of T-Wave vs. Stun Spore which means Exeggutor has to enter the field vs Alakazam fresh. Blizzard can freeze and force a Recover. No freeze but Exeggutor comes in for free
T28: Exeggutor vs. Alakazam: After I did not get to trade paralysis on t27, I saw my comeback chances fade as an unparalyzed Alakazam is too difficult for me to handle. To my surprise, he still lets me get the Stun Spore off instead of taking the opportunity to run. A mistake from my opponent
T33: Tauros vs. Tauros: After Snorlax made up some ground he forces a Tauros ditto. At this point, I don't know what his last is. I figured many possible Pokemon would have been better to bring in there than Tauros (like Starmie, Chansey and probably even Zapdos). So I predict something like Rhydon in the back. This and the fact that he oftentimes ran EQ-less Tauros made me go Gengar in order to burn sleep turns.
T41: Exeggutor vs. Chansey: His last turned out to be Chansey regardless and I have to assume it is BoltBeam. Waking up Gengar on it seemed like a plan. If I get the wake, it would force in his Exeggutor which could be exploited by a double to Exeggutor of my own to basically get a free Explosion.
T46: Tauros vs. Chansey: Gengar does not wake up and the position looks dire. I feel I have to get the critOHKO on Chansey with Hyper Beam. Instead I get it on Exeggutor. His Chansey turned out to not carry T-Wave and my opponent paid the price for it by losing g1 to my Tauros

Game 2
:starmie: :zapdos: :exeggutor: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros: VS :jynx: :golem: :starmie: :alakazam: :snorlax: :tauros:

T4: Starmie vs. Starmie: I go Exeggutor as I predict him to either go Chansey or reveal Thunderbolt but get punished by a critical hit Blizzard. Nice move from my opponent, especially since it indeed does carry Thunderbolt
T6: Starmie vs. Starmie: He reaveals Thunderbolt as I crucially get off the T-Wave. He brought the Starmie set that is weak against Snorlax but unfortunately I do not have a variant with Rest on this team and also lack Chansey. So this will be a bit tricky to deal with
T15: Alakazam vs. Starmie: I predict the Jynx-switch to relieve the special drops correctly to recover my Starmie
T21: Snorlax vs. Snorlax: I go to Snorlax a bit hastily on Starmie and catch myself a T-Wave on t18. I get to trade with opposing Snorlax just in time through paralysis
T25: Tauros vs. Tauros: At this point I presume there's a Ground type in the back so I soak the Hyper Beam with Zapdos. Maybe shooting for Thunderbolt crit was better? I decide to go with the T-Wave as it gives me some guaranteed value
T32: Exeggutor vs. Jynx: I use Explosion predicting Starmie but it does not work. Starmie is causing me trouble and on top of it I am playing a Zapdos vs. Golem matchup. I conclude that I cannot just fight Starmie with Alakazam and get it paralyzed in the process. I need unparalyzed Alakazam against Golem. I resort to the shaky solution of going up against it with my own Psychic-Starmie and hope for an early special drop (and avoid the critical hit after) to keep Alakazam fresh
T48: Starmie vs. Alakazam: Indeed it actually worked and my Starmie actually gets the better of his Starmie. He reveals Alakazam and now I cannot save my own from paralyis any longer anyway so I save Starmie as fodder and go Alakazam
T75: Tauros vs. Alakazam: Decisive turn of the game. Situation is relatively clear. If I KO Alakazam with Hyper Beam, I (very likely) win. If he catches the Hyper Beam with Golem and Explodes, he wins. I decide to go for the midground EQ predicting Golem. The real Golem prediction is Blizzard but EQ into Golem is okayish, as it has crit odds plus actual odds for non-crit EQ followed by non-crit Blizzard to KO. Also if I predict wrong and he stays in with Alakazam it gives me crit and FP odds. My opponent gets the prediction right and makes a ballsy move by exposing Alakazam to the KO. Alakazam avoids the crit or FP and I lose

T2: Exeggutor vs. Exeggutor: Both go for the 50/50 on Sleep Powder and I get it. Already a big turn early in the game. Good start for me
T10: Snorlax vs. Chansey: Snorlax gets the KO on Chansey after it missed Sing through paralysis and tried to heal following the critical hit. Things are looking even better now as he won't get his sleep off
T19: Starmie vs. Cloyster: After I tried to catch Alakazam on switch-in with T-Wave and recovered around his Explosion all the while he fished for the freeze, I finally just click Psychic and get the KO with a critical hit after which my opponent forfeits

Game 4
:alakazam: :venusaur: :exeggutor: :starmie: :zapdos: :tauros: VS :alakazam: :cloyster: :exeggutor: :chansey: :rhydon: :tauros:

T7: Venusaur vs. Exeggutor: After opposing Exeggutor took some punishment in the process of sleeping Alakazam, it used Rest as Alakazam immediately woke up. I get to bring in Venusaur and sleep Exeggutor
T9: Venusaur vs. Chansey: The drama begins as I (overambitiously) use Swords Dance to pose a OHKO-threat instead of just keeping it cool and absorbing the forced T-Wave with Alakazam. A big mistake from me.
T11: Venusaur vs. Rhydon: I almost saved the situation by clicking Hyper Beam against Rhydon. I was actaully predicting Alakazam to come in but Exeggutor would have worked fantastically as well. I get the unwanted crit and my opponent gets to keep Sleep Clause active. In all honesty, I did not deserve to get rewarded for my earlier mistake and rightfully the game did not give me that KO.
T16-23: Venusaur vs. Chansey: Next mistake with Venusaur is incoming. I suspect his Chansey to carry Sing since he let his Exeggutor take the Sleep Powder earlier and do not want to expose my Alakazam to it. So I try to pressure it with paralyzed Venusaur. This won't help me at all and just gives away HP on Venusaur. On t23 I do what I should have done all along. I get in Alakazam and paralyze Chansey, even if it means I have to risk getting hit by Sing. I even dodge Sing. The damage is now done, though. I now have seen Rhydon and Cloyster and squandered the opportunity to farm the win with Venusaur.
T27: Venusaur vs.Chansey: I get lucky and dodge some Sings. I am by no means out of the woods but I can SD with Venusaur, at least forcing Chansey out
T33: Tauros vs. Tauros: Things get even worse as I Hyper Beam into his Cloyster-switch and lose Tauros
T35: Starmie vs. Cloyster: I get lucky as he predicts my Venusaur switch and I dodge a Blizzard. Even then, I think it is an unnecessary risk from my opponent as he was far ahead. Anyway would have deprived me of another sacrifice
T37: Starmie vs. Chansey: At this point my opponent is outplaying me constantly. I try to send in Zapdos on predicted Sing as he just uses Seismic Toss, denying me the sleep fodder
T54-56: Exeggutor vs. Chansey: After yet another outplay on t53 which ends up in the KO of Venusaur, I am now staring down Chansey with Exeggutor. I thought Chansey was very valuable for him (it would land Sing on alakazam or Starmie eventually and kill the game once it had done so). I figured he would not just let my Exeggutor explode on it (since that is the only way I am beating Chansey at this point). So I use Sleep Powder to catch Alakazam coming in. He does not switch and keeps failing to land Sing through paralysis. I finally explode and he lets me KO Chansey. Now his task is beating Starmie and Alakazam without Chansey's sleep and I will have to try to make it as hard as possible for him.
T101: Starmie vs. Alakazam: Dodging paralysis from Bodyslam on Starmie (as I did on t74, t88 and t99) won't work forever and I will have to give it up eventually. So I figured I'd try to catch a Tauros-double on this turn as it was a valid move for him. It does not work and I get T-waved by Alakazam. My position gets even worse now.
T122-124: Starmie vs. Rhydon: This is where I am finally on the brink of defeat in this game. My opponent could simply use EQ here and set up a Hyper Beam sweep with Tauros. Note that one Substitute is fine for him to fish for an FP which would make him have to hit one less Hyper Beam. However, he cannot allow to sub twice and get in KO range of Zapdos. I Surf once on his Sub and go Zapdos on EQ to Drill Peck once and prevent anymore Substitutes
T125: Alakazam vs. Rhydon: Even then. He now can use Explosion from Cloyster freely (becuase Zapdos switching into it is no longer an option) to achieve an endgame whith Rhydon and Tauros in which he only has to hit one Hyper Beam. He can just sacrifice Alakazam here and go Cloyster. He does not go for that line, though and stays in with Rhydon on Alakazam, going down in exchange for EQ damage. I can only speculate as to why. Either he is running some weird Cloyster set without Explosion or he just did't see the line (we're in t125 of g4 of the biggest tournament of the year after all, pressure and fatigue add up). Either way, it's a mistake that would ultimately end up costing him the finals
T126-127: Even with that, I still have to survive Tauros Bodyslam plus Hyper Beam with 95% Starmie and avoid FP, which indeed happens
T149: Alakazam vs. Alakazam: I want to force a Psychic PP out of him and do not want to risk the tie.
T150: Starmie vs. Cloyster: He has another opportunity to win with Explosion here (provided I do not predict it). He does not take it and gets punished with a miss on Clamp and gets paralyzed in return.
T151-152: Alakazam vs. Alakazam: I predict Explosion now but he runs from potential Thunderboltcrit. Our Alakazam face off and I decide to risk the speed tie this time. I get Recover off. Somehow I survived the game until here and now I actually have a chance to walk away with the win
T189: Alakazam vs. Alakazam: My Alakazam scores the KO on his Alakazam with a critical hit and withstands Tauros one last time, leaving his Cloyster walled and I win the finals.

I get another 3-1 victory over Kaz and this time it's worth the Championship. I have to say that is was a rocky finals. I have not been in the lead in most games but I managed to somehow emerge victorious. In g1 I was able to overcome a huge deficit after the bad start against Jynx and thanks to him (presumably) having a bad moveset on Chansey. In g2 I almost overcame a Zapdos vs. Golem matchup and had it come down to a 50/50 prediction that did not go my way. G3 I was getting a good start and snowballed the game with RNG. G4 was marked by a terrible mistake from me in the beginning with Venusaur. It is especially frustrating in hindsight, seeing his team was eaten alive by Venusaur had I played it cool. How I would have loved to win the finals with Venusaur as the MVP in this situation. In the end, though, if there is one situation where it is forgivable it is this one. I won the finals in spite of messing up there and somehow this fits even better to the theme of the finals for me. If I had to give it a headline, it would be something like "Whatever happens, never give up!"
I was just not willing to give it to my opponent easily. If he wanted to win the set and get a chance at the tournament win, he was gonna have to KO 6 of my Pokemon 3 times, no matter what. Maybe it's this mindset that was ultimately the decisive factor in this set. And with that I am happy and proud to call myself the RBY Invitational VI Champion!

What are the plans going forward?

In moments like this, when you have climbed the mountain, it is natural to ask what's next. First of all, I have to say that it was my goal to win a tournament like this. It proves that I, even when I am not in the most active phase of my RBY-career, can still compete with the absolute elite of this tier. But it also kind of completes my RBY-career in a sense. While I have won RBY-team tournaments (RBYPL and RBYWC) and a lot of individual tournaments back in the day on PP and gained the respect of my peers, I have never won anything big since smogon created its old gens curcuit and the RBY community basically moved there. At this point, with this victory, I have nothing left to prove.
With that said, there are a couple of tournaments that still intrigue me: RBYWC with Team Germany. We won it already but it's time to reclaim the title and be the first team to win it multiple times. RBY Ladder Tournament. I come from the ladder originally, and I thinkit's the most fair competition since no-one has an information advantage. Getting high on the ladder in a time where a lot of good people are trying can be frustrating but it is competitively appealing. RBY Global Championships. I just love the format. It's not as grueling as double elimination but you also can't get eliminted with just one bad bo3 as it is in single elimination. This format produces a fair winner and that is how I define competitive. Just look at the list of Global Champions. It would be great to also add my name to that one.
Goals and achievements are not everything, though. I never startet playing just for that and if I never win anything anymore, that's fine. I startet this because I love the game and I want to have fun playing it in a competitive setting. This has not changed. I will try to keep playing whenever I feel like joining something and feel like I have the necessary capacities to commit at least somewhat to it. Naturally my free time to spend on this is becoming less and less and I have also felt this in Invitational. Some rounds I was not able to prepare at all and I am lucky I never dropped in the lower bracket because some weeks would have been hard to even play the games on the weekend. After all, I am a competitor at heart. It is not possible for me to join something and not care about the outcome and it sometimes feels like not having an even playing field against all these incredibly active people. Whenever I feel that I cannot keep up anymore is probably the time when I eventually quit for good.

Shoutouts

When it comes to this tournament run in particular, there is nobody to shout out. I did it by myself.
Generally, I have to shout out Serpi and Gefährlicher Random still. Those guys got my RBY OU sharp again when I came back for RBYWC in 2023 and without them I don't think I would have been able to achieve this victory. Serpi in particular is the best RBY OU player of the post-PP era by far and a legend of this game already. If Invitational continues, it would be more surprising to me if he does not win it in the future than the other way around.

Tauros is No. 1. We have reached a state where dropping one of the three Normals has become nothing completely crazy anymore. Tauros is the one Pokemon where justifying to drop it is the hardest of them all by far. The individual matchup against Tauros almost dictates whether or not a Pokemon has a chance to be viable in OU. Rest-sets have proven their effectiveness and are at this point no longer a marginal phenomenon

:exeggutor:
Sleep Powder and Explosion are as crazy as ever and Stun Spore on top of it is incredible. It is integral to most structures dropping Chansey and acts as the gatekeeper of the early game with its ability to gain huge leads in the beginning of games with 2 for 1 trades on the right Pokemon but coversely shields teams from being ran over early on. Rest-sets have proven their effectiveness and are at this point no longer a marginal phenomenon

:snorlax:
Crazy glue Pokemon. Very flexible in its movesets Reflect-sets are still important but seem to have passed their peak at the moment. Self-Destruct is phenomenal for enabling teammates. Some defensive teams (mostly using Cloyster and Rhydon) have proven effective without it

:starmie:
The ability to fight Tauros, even when paralyzed, is amazing and so important for basically every team. Has the ability to create clutch moments in battle, especially with critical hits, like few other Pokemon can without sacrificing themselves. Difficult to KO in general. On top of that, it's a fastastic lead with T-Wave and Blizzard and living Exeggutor's / Cloyster's Explosion is great.

:chansey:
Best special wall. It's also a sleeper but Sing is getting rarer and dropping the Pokemon is the play more often than it used to be. Still, every team needs a plan to KO this in order to advance the game. It is great in the early game but can become a liability in the later stages when you need Pokemon that keep the pressure high

:alakazam:
Is a consistent lead and back-Alakazam is gaining traction with Snorlax going for Self-Destruct more often. Outspeeding Tauros and being able to fight Starmie and Exeggutor are just nice traits

:rhydon:
There's not better Pokemon to take advantage of a paralyzed team. Substitute is amazing. Stands up to Snorlax without fear of Self-Destruct. Can create unrecoverable damage on recover-users in endgame scenarios, supporting the Tauros-sweep like nothing else. Zapdos wall but that's just on top and not even the real selling point of this Pokemon

:zapdos:
This is the best comeback-Pokemon in the game. Agility is amazing. The only real mixed attacker in the tier. Teams are prepared for it, though. The Rhydon matchup is terrible. Has established itself a small niche as a lead

:cloyster:
Clamp and Explosion are amazing. Very easy to at least get some value out of. Potential to freeze its own checks. Forms a nice duo with Rhydon on Snorlaxless teams. takes on Snorlax and Tauros but sometimes it's difficult to make progress stick without getting lucky. Does not have the sheer power of Rhydon and is not a lead like Zapdos

B-
:jynx:
Consistent at getting early Sleep like nothing else. Sleep and freeze combination can win games. Gets stronger when teams drop Chansey. Especially difficult to handle for Wrap-Teams. Most of the time struggles to make progress after getting the sleep (when it does not score a freeze)

:gengar:
Normal immunity is great. Explosion is great. Hypnos sucks. Has to run in the lead position from everything and even against Jynx has a high chance to disappoint. Explosion t1 is not a play anymore on normal teams as even Jynx Teams carry Exeggutor more frequently again
