Reckless and Relentless (5th Gen OU)

Introduction

Okay, were to start.... Im not the best of battlers or team builders but I think that this might be my best team yet so I was hoping for people to help make it better. I started of with the Grass/Fire/Water combo firstly and worked my way through various pokemon, sets and ideas until I came to a decent team, just a few more tweaks and here we have it. It has served pretty well, not trying to sound cocky or anything but I hardly ever lose, so if you'd help. THANKS :D

SPECS! (Heatran) (M) @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock
- Earth Power
- Dragon Pulse

First up is Heatran. I wanted the Grass/Fire/Water combo and most of the Fire types were a bit too frail and didn’t fit into my team, and I didn’t really want to use Heatran because I used him A LOT last gen but I just had to have him. As a lead he works really well, with his natural bulk and awesome SAtk he can take a few hits and dish out some powerful ones. He can also stay for mid-game and take out some things with his decent speed. The Ev’s are there to gain maximum Speed and have as much SAtk as possible. The moves are pretty basic for a leadtran except for Dragon Pulse which is there for a filler but it kind of works alright as it can take out some pokes like Garchomp who can’t take me out because of my Air Balloon and I take a chunk of its health.

Rotom-W.png

OVEN FTW (Rotom-W) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
- Hidden Power [Fire]

With the Rotom forms changing types I thought they would be pretty cool so I just had to have one in my team. I chose the Water forme because it has only 1 weakness and Grass isn’t that common plus this forme counters a crap ton of threats, especially with the Scarf. It reaches a high enough Speed to outpace all of the things that I need to outpace. 308 SAtk is a respectable amount but with its powerful STAB moves it does enough damage. HP Fire is there mainly for Ferrothorn but can take out other Grass types that try to threaten my team. I normally have problems with stall and bulky set-er-uppers but Trick allows me to counter some huge threats such as Reuniclus and cripple enemy walls such as Blissey. I don’t think I’ll be taking this guy out the team for a while as he plays some key roles and provides good coverage

uJelly? (Reuniclus) (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Psychic
- Focus Blast

uJelly? But seriously this guy is amazing. I never really liked the fully offensive set so I casted her aside. I then did some research and saw this set and thought, why not? After a few games I then realised how to use her properly. Although I don’t get many sweeps, it’s still a great pokemon to have on my team. It provides decent synergy and counters quite a few things very well, plus it’s a great counter to stall with its Magic Guard trait. The Ev’s give me maximum physical bulk and after 1 CM my SDef is normally high enough to take a hit or two without recovering it off. The moves are pretty basic, set up CM on enemy pokes – proceed to sweep – if there’s a threat I’ll gtfo out of there. I picked LO over Lefties just for the extra damage, and with my bulk and recover I thought I didn’t really need the extra recovery.

Death Note (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Atk / 216 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Protect
- Facade
- Swords Dance

Another pokemon I didn’t really like at the start of the gen but I didn’t realise how awesome and important it would be. It’s more of a bulky offensive ser and one of the more original sets of the team. The Ev’s allow me to have gain great bulk and out speed base 95’s and the rest are just dumped into Atk just for extra damage really. Also with Gliscor natural bulk, especially in Def, it doesn’t really need much investment in its defences to take a few hits. The moves may look a bit odd but believe me they work so well together it’s not even funny. Protect is there to scout the enemies moves (Ice Beam T-tar), see if they are choiced in any way and to gain extra heal. SD is there to double my attack and with my decent speed and a bit of luck I can sometimes sweep unprepared teams. Earthquake is just a great all round and STAB move. Now, Façade is the crux of this set as it allows me to have a decent coverage move with good damage from the poison but it also allows me to take out one of this metagames biggest threat, Air Balloon Excadrill. My main counter to SS teams and a good overall poke so im pretty sure this guy isn’t going anywhere in a hurry.

Zzz, huh? (Gyarados) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Waterfall
- Dragon Tail

Rest Talk Gyara > DD Gyara, just saying… I’d seen and heard a lot about this set and I can’t believe I hadn’t used it sooner. Honestly, this guy is an absolute monster! The EV’s are there to provide maximum physical bulk plus the Intimidate makes him pretty solid, he also has pretty good SDef so he doesn’t need much investments there. He fills a lot of key roles such as status absorber, phazer, key counters to threats such as Conkeldurr, Heatran, Infernape and so much more. With his awesome all round bulk, great typing and moves he can wall almost everything without a SE move. A STAB Waterfall coming of a 295 Atk, I think, still does a ton of damage even without any Atk EV’s. Dragon Tail > Roar ultimately because it does 60 damage and that damage plus switch ins and outs wears down the enemy pretty quickly believe it or not, I don’t really mind the 90% accuracy because it hardly ever misses and on the off chance that it does miss it isn’t really a crucial moment so I can afford miss.

50 Scent (Breloom) (F) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Seed Bomb
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Spore
Nothing special here, just a typical SporePunching Breloom. I really wanted a Grass type and Virizion and Serperior just weren’t doing it for me. I originally had Celebi here but it wasn’t as effective as it use to be so I went back to basics and got myself a Breloom. I tried the TechniLoom set but I couldn’t seem to be pulling anything of. So I had to go straight back to basics even more and get the SporePunching set. Surprisingly, it worked quite well. I can’t really say much about the set or EV’s as it is just the typical stuff. My favourite victim is Ferrothorn as it always tries to set up Leech Seed or if they are smart SR, either way I Spore, Sub and Focus Punch is an OHKO. I just go on from there. With all these new walls hardly any of them can deal with my Breloom that well, also all these new sweepers are pretty fragile so Focus Punch or Seed Bomb are normally OHKO’s as well. Oh how I love Breloom. So basically, not many things in 5th Gen can stop Breloom in his tracks that well so it makes it all the more easier for me to grab an easy sweep, yay

Please do rate my team, THANKS :D

Threats
  1. 381.png
Life Orb / Choice Specs Latios
  2. 642.png
    Nasty Plot Thunderus
Hey -Sparky-, although this generation isn't as focused around the FWG core as the previous generation, you've still seemed to construct a solid team. However, there still seem to be some problems that can be solved. Life Orb or Choice Specs Latios can switch in after a kill or on Heatran's Fire Blast / Earth Power, Rotom-W's Hydro Pump / Thunderbolt, Gliscor's Earthquake or Gyarados's Waterfall, and launch powerful attacks upon the team. Every team member is pretty much destroyed by a Draco Meteor followed by (if they managed to survive) Surf or Hidden Power Fire. LO variants are pretty difficult for you to wear out due to Recover, whereas Specs variants will work as "Hit-and-run" Pokemon, even managing to cripple Reuniclus with Trick. Although it doesn't get as many opportunities as Latios, Thunderus could possibly force out Breloom, Gyarados or Gliscor due to the threat of Thunderbolt or HP Ice, and get in a Nasty Plot boost. Nothing on your team will be able to withstand the power from its attacks, nor outspeed it, bar Rotom-W, who is a shaky answer at best, not OHKOing Thunderus with any move, while getting OHKO'd by +2 Focus Blast.

Solutions:

  • Solution A: Tyranitar over Rotom-W
TBH, Rotom-W is a great revenge killer and all, but I feel you don't really need it that badly on this team; there isn't a bunch of threats Rotom-W makes revenging easier, so IMO, it is the weakest link. In its place, you should try Tyranitar. Tyranitar is a formidable check against LO Latios as well as Specs Latios, especially if you can catch it on a Hidden Power Fire or -2 Draco Meteor (be vary of Surf) and put it in a "checkmate" position, where if it switches it dies to Pursuit, and staying in means dying to Crunch. The Sandstorm might seem like a turnoff, but it only really hits Gyarados and Breloom, the latter still gets recovery in Sandstorm, while the former's Leftovers are cancelled out, but it still has Rest to shrug off damage. In addition to this, Tyranitar is able to remove Reuniclus's most important checks, Latias and Latios, meaning Reuniclus will be able to rip through the opposition with relative ease. Tyranitar will also function as a potent starter for your games, though you should put it in a different position to decieve the opponent in Team Preview.
  • Solution B: Choice Scarf set on Heatran
Without Scarf Rotom-W, you lose a bit of speed on this team, and you still are weak to Nasty Plot Thunderus, which Heatran patches up relatively well. With the boost in Speed, Heatran will be able to revenge kill a myriad of threats, most importantly Thunderus, who is still a possible threat. Thunderus takes a solid 79% - 93% from Fire Blast, a definite KO after Stealth Rock, more powerful than a Super Effective Hidden Power Ice. So when you see Thunderus on Team Preview, setting up Stealth Rock should be priority. However, this might not be enough at times, and you can try a Chople Berry on Tyranitar with Stone Edge, which will allow Tyranitar to take the incoming Focus Blast and weaken Thunderus out badly with Stone Edge. This alleviates your Thunderus problem by quite a bit and gives you a lot better chance against it.

Optional Changes:
Some things you could try are Trickroom Reuniclus and Taunt over Protect on Gliscor, which gives you a way to torture Offensive and Stall teams alike.

Movesets:

Spr_5b_248.png

Tyranitar (F) @ Leftovers / Chople Berry

- Ice Beam / Stone Edge
---

Spr_5b_485.png

Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spe
