VGC 21 Regidrago [QC 1/1] [GP 1/1]

move 3: Dragon Pulse
move 4: Hyper Beam / Protect
item: Choice Scarf / Dragon Fang
ability: Dragon's Maw
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* With its Dragon-type moves only resisted by Steel and Fairy-types, Regidrago fills an interesting niche in the current metagame through sheer power. While it has a limited movepool, its Dragon's Maw-boosted Dragon-type moves let it break holes in opponents, with coverage moves like Ancient Power and Fire Fang being noticeably weaker in comparison.

* Dragon Energy is the strongest Dragon-type move in Series 9 when Regidrago is at full HP. Even against Steel-types that would otherwise take little damage from like Metagross and Celesteela Dragon Energy cuts their HP by one third, typically more than a super effective coverage move would have. However, Dragon Energy decreases in power as Regidrago loses HP, so it is most reliable to use when it can move before the opponent. Additionally, when Dynamaxed, Dragon Energy's Base Power is fixed at its maximum.

* Draco Meteor serves as a powerful secondary STAB move for Regidrago. While only hitting one opponent, Draco Meteor's Base Power does not decrease as Regidrago's HP falls, providing an alternative option to Dragon Energy.

* Dragon Pulse gives Regidrago a STAB move with no drawback. With a naturally high HP stat and resistances to Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric, Regidrago can stay on the field and take a few hits, letting it take advantage of its relative longevity and keep up the offensive pressure.

* Hyper Beam hits opposing Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini and Grimmsnarl, allowing Regidrago to break through them. Regidrago would prefer that its teammates handle Fairy-types, but in a pinch, Hyper Beam lets it deal with those threats along with providing speed control through a powerful Max Strike. Protect shields Regidrago from incoming damage, allowing its Dragon Energy to stay as powerful as possible.

* Choice Scarf lets Regidrago outrun a lot of the metagame, letting it unleash Dragon Energy at full power before its HP decreases. With forms of speed control such as Tailwind and Electroweb, Dragon Fang boosts Regidrago's Dragon-type moves even further and lets it switch attacks, which is useful when Dragon Energy becomes weaker than Dragon Pulse.

* With its Dragon-type moves only resisted by Steel- and Fairy-types, Regidrago fills an interesting niche in the current Mmetagame through sheer power. While Regidrago has a limited movepool, its Dragon's Maw boosted Dragon-Ttype moves lets it clean through unresisted and resisted opponents. Regidrago performs best when it is outspeeding its opponents, dealing massive damage in the process. (Doesn't any pokemon perform best when outspeeding?)

* Dragon Energy is the primary STAB move for Regidrago, being one of the strongest Dragon-type moves in the game (In Series 9, it's the highest) when Regidrago is at full HP, alongside hitting both opponents. Even against Steel-types that would otherwise resist like Metagross and Celesteela, Dragon Energy usually deals more damage than a super-effective coverage move would have. However, Dragon Energy decreases in power as Regidrago loses HP, so it is most reliable to use when Regidrago can move before the opponent. Additionally, when Dynamaxed Dragon Energy's Base Power is fixed at its maximum value.

* Draco Meteor serves as a powerful secondary Dragon-type move for Regidrago. While only hitting one opponent, Draco Meteor's Base Power does not decrease as Regidrago's HP falls, providing an alternative option to Dragon Energy. Draco Meteor still has its downsides, being only 90 percent accurate and lowering Regidrago's Special Attack by two stages when it is used. Despite these downsides, Draco Meteor allows Regidrago to clean up in the endgame if it takes a hit during the battle.

* Dragon Pulse gives Regidrago a Dragon-Ttype move with little drawbacks besides having lower Base Power than other Dragon-type moves. With a naturally high HP stat and resistances to Fire-, Water-, Grass-, (Added a few hyphens) and Electric-types, Regidrago can stay on the field and take a few hits, so Dragon Pulse lets Regidrago take advantage of its relative longevity and keep up the offensive pressure.

* Hyper Beam hits opposing Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini and Grimmsnarl, allowing Regidrago to break through them Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini or Grimmsnarl that may try to absorb Regidrago's Dragon-type moves. (Changed a bit of wording here to avoid the repetition) Regidrago would prefer that its teammates handle Fairy-types, but in a pinch Hyper Beam lets it deal with those threats. (It's also a really strong Max Strike, its own speed control!) On a non-Choice Scarf set, Protect is an option to consider, while making Regidrago more passive towards Fairy-types. (Dislike this generally. I would be looking more for a decent reason why it's there - e.g. "Protect shields Regidrago from incoming damage, allowing its Dragon Energy to stay as powerful as possible") Other coverage options like Ancient Power and Fire Fang are noticeably weaker in comparison to Dragon's Maw boosted Dragon-type moves, and not worth using. (It feels strange to mention this here. I would mention this in the overview when talking about Dragon's Maw up there.)

* Choice Scarf lets Regidrago outrun a lot of the metagame, letting it unleash Dragon Energy at full power before its opponents move. With other forms of speed control such as Tailwind or Electroweb, Dragon Fang becomes another solid item to use, boosting Regidrago's Dragon-type moves even further and letting it switch attacks. This is most useful after Regidrago takes a few hits and Dragon Energy becomes weaker than Dragon Pulse, letting it switch moves to keep up the assault.

(It's a touch wordy at times, see if you can cut it down at all.)

Remember that the moves themselves, stats, etc are already detailed in the strategy dex. GP really doesn't like having this information repeated in the analysis itself without contextualizing it into the metagame/Pokemon being played, as it's otherwise just fluff. See what you can do with this.

Also, I'm a bit surprised to not see many calcs relating to Regidrago's power, isn't this a big part of why you pick it? A lot of the "dex info" parts can be fixed by simply noting calcs to contextualize it into the metagame. When you say an attack is "the strongest in X format" then you should be noting relevant OHKOs to help sell it.

(This sentence appears to be unfinished and doesn't seem to have any meaning. Finish it or remove it. The part about lowering SpA is ok despite being dex info since you're contextualizing it into how Regidrago is used, keep that in mind for the future.)

* Dragon Pulse gives Regidrago a Dragon-type move with little few drawbacks (alternatively, remove the "s" from "drawbacks") besides having lower Base Power than other Dragon-type moves. (contextualize the lower base power; does it lose out on any XHKOs, etc? Otherwise, just say "with no drawback" and leave it at that) With a naturally high HP stat and resistances to Fire-, Water-, Grass-, and Electric-types, Regidrago can stay on the field and take a few hits, so Dragon Pulse lets Regidrago take advantage of its relative longevity and keep up the offensive pressure.

Implemented, thanks for checking!

Regidrago actually does not get many OHKO's due to how bulky the metagame is, it's main draw is dealing large spread damage to the opponents, so I highlighted the how much it deals to Metagross and Celesteela instead since it highlights more of its cleaning abilities.
