The Retro Cup of Pokemon features all oldgen OU tiers. That means RBY OU (Bo3), GSC OU, ADV OU, DPP OU, BW OU, ORAS OU, SM OU and SS OU. Each team will be required to have 8 players and 4 substitutes.

The Second Qualifying Round features teams playing in a 7v7 format, first one to 4 qualifies to the Main Event.
Rules:
  • General tournament rules and regulations can be found here.
  • If metagame changes occur during the middle of a round, they will take effect in the subsequent round.
  • Battles must take place on either Smogtours or Pokemon Showdown!
  • Replays are required. Any win post without replays will not be counted

  • On Substitution:
    • If you are unable to schedule with your opponent, please let your managers know ASAP so they can communicate that to us or the other team's managers for a potential substitute.
    • When making a substitution, please inform the host team, the managers of the opposing team, and all of the players affected by the substitution to ensure that everyone is made aware.
    • Keep in mind that once a player is subbed out, they cannot be subbed back into the same round, but can be put back onto the roster for the next round.
    • Substitutions will not be allowed in tiebreak series unless both teams agree (or TDs enforce double sub). We will be reluctant to give activity wins to those who are clearly fishing for them.

Looking forward to play our games - just posting this for documentation purposes as this has to be one of the biggest fuckups in tournament organisation ever.

Perfect top 8 to go on but instead 3rd place have to play it out with teams placed as bad as 14 with a record as bad as 6-10.
Going through with this format is a complete joke ngl. I think all teams assumed that this rule here:

Implies that the rest of the non-10-6 slots would be played out only by teams with an equal record. Most of us played this qualifiers like this multiple times and from a competitors perspective it really is the only thing that makes sense. In my eyes it was just a massive oversight from the tour hosts who clearly did not think this through.

Why does it not make sense? It makes Round 1 feel completely pointless. Only 2 teams advanced and 3 were eliminated, even though those games had a bigger sample size than Round 2 will have. Teams between 3rd and 14th basically qualify for Round 2. To us players, this comes across as a complete lack of respect for the work and motivation that we poured into this tour.
For example: 5 days before the end of the round our team had a 6-3 record with 7 games to go. Looking back at it we could have deadgamed or forfeited all 7 of those games and would still be in the same spot now lmao. Clearly goes against what this site stands for.

The rules btw also imply that there should be a tiebreaker between all 9-7 teams to determine the seeding of round 2.

It says it twice here that this only applies for teams ranked 8th or lower. When I talked to an admin he said:

We could easily say the same about how a Round2 should be handled:
Wcop 2022 Qualifiers, Wcop 2023 Qualifiers, Wcop 2024 Qualifiers, Wcop 2025 Qualifiers

What is also funny is that Carribean deadgamed their final game, assuming that they are already out but they would actually be tied with Belgium lmao.

No, you would be playing against a stronger opponent. (Not to mention you would be eliminated had a single game gone the other way for any of the other 9-7 teams)

No, it says nothing about what happens to teams placed 1-7 (because it is obvious that they are not going to play tiebreakers. Round 2 is not a tiebreaker, it is Round 2). If you don't purposefully crop the screenshot maliciously, you can see a line that makes this crystal clear just two sentences later:

No, they had worse Strength of Schedule and would not have partaken in Round 2 regardless

Very cool of you to lash out in public after I told you to stop lashing out in private. There are ways to deliver constructive feedback, such as the ones that your teammate Drachenkeule used - but being angry, malicious, and factually incorrect is not one of them.

I do not have time to continue litigating this issue, and the tournament will continue to run as has been described in the post all along. I will delete further public noise about this issue as I simply do not have time to moderate it in detail, and I believe I have responded to all legitimate concerns adequately across Discord and now the forums.

If you want to improve the tournament format for next year, DM me your ideas and proposals and I will keep your feedback in mind for 2026. Everything else is wholly unproductive and this post is the final straw on my patience - you can say what you want but anything that further "calls out" the decisions will be shut down (deleted, kicked from the discord, etc). We have heard you already and we do not have time for your tantrums. Have a good day
