[SET]
Gouging Fire @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Name: Physically Defensive Dragon Dance (Dragon)
Ability: Protosynthesis
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 Spe or 248 HP / 16 Def / 140 SpD / 104 Spe
Impish Nature
- Flare Blitz / Heat Crash
- Breaking Swipe
- Morning Sun
- Dragon Dance
[SET COMMENTS]
With a more physically defensive spread, Dragon Dance Gouging Fire finds new setup opportunities on Pokemon such as Assault Vest Gallade, Life Orb Iron Valiant, and Dragon Dance Dragonite, notably improving the Fighting and Flying matchups. Flare Blitz deals tremendous damage to everything that does not resist it like Flutter Mane and Volcarona. Alternatively, Heat Crash can be used to avoid recoil damage while keeping a 120-Base Power attack against most targets, except heavy foes such as Mamoswine, Zamazenta, and Kyurem. Breaking Swipe ensures Gouging Fire can handle strong physical attackers, including Dragon Dance Dragonite and Choice Band Zamazenta, and combines well with Morning Sun to further augment its durability. The EV spread maximizes Gouging Fire's physical bulk and lets it outspeed Darkrai after one Dragon Dance. An alternative spread of 248 HP / 16 Def / 140 SpD / 104 Spe can be used to augment its solid special bulk, avoid a 2HKO from Assault Vest Gallade, and remain faster than Iron Valiant after one Dragon Dance.
As part of the defensive backbone of Dragon teams, Gouging Fire pairs well with both Archaludon and Hisuian Goodra. Archaludon can withstand Choice Scarf Roaring Moon's Outrage and Dragapult's Dragon Darts, while Gouging Fire can answer Assault Vest Gallade and Life Orb Iron Valiant that would otherwise pose trouble to Archaludon. Gifted with extraordinary special bulk, special moves fall short against Hisuian Goodra, making it an excellent answer to Fairy-, Dragon-, and Water-type moves from Choice Specs Flutter Mane, Latios, Dragapult, and Greninja. Offensively, Gouging Fire appreciates wallbreaking teammates that can break through its checks, such as Dragapult, Latios, Roaring Moon, Kyurem, and Raging Bolt. The Choice Specs duo Dragapult and Latios pressures opposing defensive cores, notably dealing with Toxapex, Gliscor, IronPress Zamazenta, and Archaludon. Additionally, Choice Specs Dragapult can easily wreak havoc in the Fairy matchup by 2HKOing the whole team, thanks to Infiltrator, whereas Latios provides invaluable offensive presence in the Ground matchup, effortlessly disposing of Sandy Shocks and Landorus with Ice Beam. Choice Scarf Roaring Moon threatens Choice Specs Flutter Mane, Dragapult, Gouging Fire, and Latios and can bring Gouging Fire in safely with U-turn. Both Kyurem and Raging Bolt provide great offensive support in the Flying and Water matchups; Kyurem destroys Toxapex, Gliscor, and physically defensive Gyarados, while Raging Bolt easily sweeps both types once their Electric-immune Pokemon are removed. Lastly, defensive Garchomp is another solid partner for Gouging Fire, as it can weaken Gouging Fire's answers by setting up Spikes and phazing them with either Roar or Dragon Tail.
