Choice Band Rillaboom is able to fulfill a number of roles for a team, as a breaker, a knock off user, a pivot, a revenge killing option and also general utility through grassy terrain providing the activation of hawlucha's unburden, recovery to grounded teammates and negating earthquake damage for ground weak teammates like Garganacl, aegislash, Tyranitar and Iron crown. It can also form a VoltTurn chain quite effectively with partners like Iron Crown, Iron Moth, Rotom-Wash and Magnezone. It however is far from perfect, struggling as a breaker into a number of pokemon in the tier like skarmory, celesteela, M-venusaur, Iron Moth, Amoongus and aegislash, and while it can knock off all of them barring M-Venusaur, it appreciates being paired with teammates like magnezone which can trap the steel birds, Iron Moth, M-aerodactyl, rotom-wash and Victini to directly threaten them. It is fairly adept at revenge killing targets like keldeo, M-aerodactyl but appreciates hazard setting from teammates like clefable and Tyranitar to knock targets into range or clean up weakened teams.

Swords Dance Rillaboom trades the immediate power of choice band for a more systemic take down, allowing it take on a myriad of normal checks with the right coverage moves, like high horsepower to hit Iron Moth on the switch, superpower or low kick to OHKO celesteela at +2 with a life orb after rocks, acrobatics with a grassy seed for Buzzwole, M-venusaur, Serperior and Amoonguss. There are other options in the item slot including leftover to aid in longer games and terrain extender to more reliably aid teammates like hawlucha, grassy seed Iron Crown and Aegislash. Even with all of this it still maintains a good revenge killing profile into pokemon like keldeo, M-Aerodactyl and Iron Boulder. It will however still inherently struggle into certain targets like Skarmory, M-Venusaur if lacking acrobatics, Pecharunt and Iron Moth if not hit on the switch with High Horsepower so pairing it with pokemon like Pivot Iron Crown, Hydreigon, M-Aerodactyl and Magnezone is usually a good idea.
