RMT: Death by Hugs

Death by Hugs {OU RMT}

I have been a competitive battler for over a year and a half now, and have decided that I am finally in a position to post an RMT. Death by Hugs is a team that has won me much success, although unfortunately I have not achieved great laddering success as I can only play at weekends.

The team is named after Tyranitar (Huggles) as the purpose is to set up a DDtar sweep.

  • 2 Pokemon are weak to Stealth Rock (1 of which is the lead)
  • 1 Pokemon resists Stealth Rock
  • 2 Pokemon are immune to Spikes
  • 3 Pokemon are immune to Toxic Spikes
  • All weaknessess are resisted by as many pokemon as are weak (excluding Rock)
The purpose of the team is to scout the opponents pokemon and eliminate particular threats before sweeping with DD Tyranitar

Team in Depth
(forgive my nicknames, I like them)
Changes in Red

149.png

GooglyOog @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 240 Atk/16 Spd/252 SAtk
Quiet nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Extremespeed
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast

A fairly standard lead Dragonite, I decided to use this guy because he KOs most of the common leads whilst still being useful to me later in the match. There are very few leads I will switch out against, the only common one being Aerodactyl, against whom I will go to Bronzong to take the Stone Edge and then 2KO with Gyro Ball

473.png

FeelMaMojo @ Choice Band
Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 60 Def /252 Atk/196 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Ice Shard
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Superpower

Mamoswine is one of the new additions to my squad, I used to use Latias as my revenge killer, but with the addition of Life Orb starmie, many threats were covered and Latias became somewhat redundant. Mamoswine is just what I needed on this team, a (relatively) bulky choice Bander capable of ripping holes in the opponents walls. The EV spread and nature allows it to outrun Jolly Tyranitar, whilst being bulkier than usual and packing lots more punch than a Jolly Mamo.

145_2.png

YellwBurd (Zapdos) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 6 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Roost
- Heat Wave
- Thunderbolt

This is a more offensive Zapdos set than I used to run (thanks Snorlaxe) and it works wonders on the team, it is a very bulky attacker and together with scarfmie helps me inflict lots of damage to the opponents bulky pokemon, softening them up for a lategame ttar sweep.

~~~~~~
121.png
StarYou @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Rapid Spin
As suggested by Snorlaxe, Life Orb Starmie lets the team run with much smoother synergy than it did before. This combined with Zapdos allows this team to pound opposing walls as hard as possible and provide an opening for a DD Sweep.
376.png
Smack @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 244 Def / 12 Spe
Impish Nature (+Def, -SpA)
- Earthquake
- Thunderpunch
- Stealth Rock
- Fire Punch
Well this is a pretty drastic change from what I used to run here, wall breaker gross was no longer needed with my three highly offensive attackers (zapdos, mamo, starmie) yet I still had yet to cover the second most used pokemon in the game, Gyarados. Even after a DD gyarados can do very little to metagross, who simply switches in and thunderpunches, it will also almost always get up rocks. This is so unexpected and has so far worked wonders. Fire Punch is for Scizors as after it gets a swords dance this is my most reliable way of stopping it.
248.png
Huggles @ Babiri Berry / Lum Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 6 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Crunch
- Dragon Dance
- Fire Punch / Earthquake
- Stone Edge
Ironically tyranitar is probably the member of my team I am most unhappy with. I am constantly changing items and the third moveslot. Babiri berry saves me from scizor and scarfrachi revenging me, and Lum saves me from crippling status. Most of the time scizor and Jirachi are taken out either by zapdos, metagross or latias, so babiri is usually redundant. A similar principle applies to Fire Punch, most steel types are taken out by Metagross, and earthquake gives me a reliable way of getting past Heatran, who otherwise causes me problems, would love reccomendations here.
Change log:
  • Changed Zapdos to more offensive variant
  • Changed Latias for Mamoswine
  • Changed Bronzong for Starmie
  • Changed Metagross to bulkGross
~~~~~~

Well there's the team, rate, hate or steal I don't really mind (please don't hate too much though)

[If a mod reads this can they please change the title of the thread to OU RMT: Death by Hugs]

Threat List

Threat List (red means beware!)
[Needs to be updated now team has change]

212.png
Zapdos or Metagross
130.png
Revenge DD variants with Latias or witch in on DD. Bulky variants can't really hurt me
380.png
My latias can come in on non CM variants and KO with Meteor. CM variants force me to reveal ttar early to force them out, but are set-up bait
479.png
Rotom is tricky, first time it appears I will send in Zong to scout its moveset, defensive ones get taken down by Latias's trick, and offensive ones fall to Scarf Draco meteor. Rotom-H is problematic as overheat does a hefty chunk to zong, and Rotom-F does heaps to Latias with Blizzard
485.png
Dragonite can take everything except dragon pulse and explosion and KO with Earthquake, Zong can take everything except Fire Blast and KO with Earthqake.
373.png
Zong can take every
thing except specs Fire Blast (with latias running around very few people run specsmence anymore)
376.png
Walled by Zappy and Zong. Meteor Mash leads can't OHKO Dragonite, and fire blast OHKO non-occa and 2KOs Occa
248.png
Walled by Zong, taken out by Dragonite or Metagross.
392.png
All variants not carrying stone edge get nailed by Dragonite. Latias can switch in on CC, Fire Blast, Grass Knot or Overheat and KO with surf
448.png
Walled by Zapdos unless its packing Ice Punch. Specs Variants do nothing to Zong, who KOs with quake
385.png
Only problem is with flinch hax, walled by Zapdos or Zong depending on its moveset.
094.png
Non scarf variants get revenged by Latias, scarfed ones I have to catch on the switch, bullet punch can revenge scarfers
260.png
Lured out by Metagross and KOed by grass knot, rindo berry is no problem as it can't OHKO gross with quake
242.png
Dragonite can lure it out after a Fire Blast or Draco Meteor. Latias can trick a scarf onto it. Not too worried as it can't stop t-tar
121.png
Lured out and KOed by Gross, non offensive variants walled by Zapdos, Latias can switch in on attacks other than Ice Beam and KO with thunderbolt.
482.png
Leads get KOed by two extremespeeds, Latias outspeeds non Scarfers, scarfers can be revenged by extremespeed or Metagross Bullet Punch

472.png
KOed by Latias's Surf or Zapdos's Hidden Power, Zapdos takes very little from unboosted Ice Fangs and Stone Edges
068.png
Dynamichpunch is the most annoying move in the game! I absolutely have to get rid of this as it stops Tyranitar dead in its tracks. Normally I explode bronzong on rest talkers, sub three attacks I have to work around with prediction.
134.png
Non toxic variants beaten easily by Zapdos, Draco meteors do a hefty chunk from either dragonite or Latias, Bronzong can wall it and wear it down with Earthquake
462.png
Lured out and KOed by Metagross
227.png
Lured out and KOed by Metagross
251.png
Thunder wave variants are annoying, other than that it dies to almost anything on my team
330.png
Zong can take anything but Fire Blast, if I predict a fire blast, Latias can come in and KO with Meteor
145.png
Forces me to go to t-tar early or switch in Latias on non HP Ice versions
149.png
Zong walls it, Latias and Gross check it
205.png
Metagross :)
286.png
Another annoying poke, normally I go to Zong to take the sleep, and then go to Zapdos, who it can't really hurt
135.png
Sometimes I wish I ran a ground type. Just have to play around this, latias can come in on thunderbolts and threaten a draco meteor.
230.png
Even in rain Latias outspeeds, zong can take dragon moves, switch latias in on the rain dance.
395.png
Sub petaya finds it difficult to set up on my team, easily revenged by Latias and non Ice beam variants can be handled by Zapdos
245.png
Metagross, Zapdos, Latias
437.png
Metagross lures out, walled by zappy who can take an explosion
468.png
Outsped and KOed by Latias, easily handled by Zapdos, no threat to t-tar once its set up
466.png
Annoyingly it gets lots of opportunities to switch in against this team, latias can still come in on resisted moves and KO with Meteor. Very real chance of getting swept by this
461.png
Can't switch in on anything, but can revenge Latias which causes problems when dealing with other pokemon

142.png
Leads get meteored then extrremespeeded, outsped and KOed by Latias (never seen a scarfer, if I did, bullet punch)
450.png
Leads eat a meteor to the face, others get lured out and KOed by gross

Hi. Interesting team you have here.

Since you're running DDtar, I suggest either Babiri Berry (for Scizor's Bullet Punch) or leftovers, which helps you restore lost HP while DDing.

For Metagross, have you considered running Expert Belt? You get a boost for SE attacks and don't lose HP so Metagross can switch in again later in the battle. Also, have you considered using Bullet Punch over Meteor Mash?

I have a feeling that Gliscor may cause problems for your team since there appears to be no way for you to easily knock it off. Have you considered HP Ice on Zapdos?

Upon further analysis, I see that Nasty Plot Infernape or Mixape may prove to be very troublesome to this team, especially if it runs HP Ice, in which case, it is very likely that it could sweep your team.

Thanks for the rate Sheshi.

Mixape is troublesome, something usually dies to it, (normally Dnite) Latias can then come in and revenge it with surf, So its never yet run through my team.

Thankyou very much for your Gliscor point, I ran HP Grass as my shuca-cario could not handle swampert. Now that metagross can lure it out and KO it i don't need HP Grass anymore, changed to HP Ice.

I ran some calcs and there was nothing important I couldn't KO with expert belt that I could with Life Orb, changed.

I will stick with Meteor Mash on Gross as I like bluffing being the Choice Bander to lure in Swamperts.

EDIT: Will run bullet punch to revenge scarfgar

I just wanna say that you are extremely underestimating Vaporeon. As a Vaporeon user myself, I know how much it can take and how much it can deal back. Your current counters for her are Zapdos,Dragonite and Latias, correct? Well let's see here....
Dragonite - Lead. Will be killed fairly early, after killing a maximum of 2 pokemon.
Latias - Let me assure you, Draco Meteor does NOT take a big chunk out of Vappy. If she wishes on the turn you Draco Meteor, she can Protect the next can Still be at near max HP. Not a good counter it seems.
Zapdos - Your only real counter to Vaporeon. Discharde will barely 2HKO Vaporeon. It's probably a 3HKO anyways seeing as Electivire only just 2HKOs with STAB Max Attack T-Punch. Toxic variant of Vaporeon are still fairly common, although not as common as they used to be. Vaporeon do however, carry 2 moves which do about 30% or 16% to Zapdos. Those two moves are Ice Beam and HP Electric. Also, if your Zapdos' Discharge is at low PP, then you may possibly be PP stalled (Since Pressure doesn't work sometimes on Shoddy >.>). A simple way to counter this is to replace HP Fire for Substitute and add some more EVs to SpD. Substitute will block Toxic which is a nice touch. Just as a minor note, Ice Beam and HP Eletric will do much less after you use Roost too. I'll rate the rest of your team in another post/Edit this post later. Gonna eat :P

EDIT: Just gonna say that only 2 members of your team resist Stealth Rock, not 3. And also btw, can't you deal with Weavile by using Metagross?

Hey, got your pm, this is a cool team and I'm a big fan of Dragon Dance Tyranitar. However there are a few changes I think you should test out. First off I suggest testing a Life Orb Rapid Spin Starmie in Bronzong's place. Bronzong is currently a kind of a utility Pokemon that I think your team could do without, but Life Orb Starmie is extremely skilled at eliminating the bulky ground type Pokemon that both Metagross and Tyranitar struggle with, so I think its a worthy change to make. Also, she can Rapid Spin, turning Dragonite and Zapdos into much more hearty Pokemon. I suggest a spread of 4 Hp / 252 SpA / 252 Spe, a Timid nature, and a set of Rapid Spin, Hydro Pump, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam. Starmie is a great Rapid Spinner and all around powerful attacker, capable of luring out and KOing many Pokemon that may threaten your team as well as Tyranitar.

Now if you do decide to go with Starmie you are going to need Stealth Rock on your team...I suggest placing it on Metagross in place of Bullet Punch, as between DDTar and ScarfLatias, this team really doesn't have a speed issue. I think that you should go for a more offensive Zapdos instead of the current one, as offensive Zapdos is much more skilled at softening up the opposing team's core...all the defensive EVs you currently have aren't needed to switch in on Gyarados (not if you go for Starmie anyway), and besides Scarf Latias already covers DD Gyarados. I suggest a spread of 4 Hp / 252 SpA / 252 Spe, a Timid nature, and a set of Thunderbolt, Heat Wave, Hidden Power Grass, and Roost (item Leftovers). Pretty similar to what you are currently running, but with a more offensive focus and the ability to lure out Swampert and OHKO with Hidden Power Grass (who can cause Tyranitar problems). Between Starmie and Zapdos your opponent's physical walls will be completely softened up and will make it much easier for Tyranitar to attempt a lategame sweep.

Other than that this is a great team, hope I helped and good luck! ;)

Cheers everyone whose rated so far, as you can see Snorlaxes comments prompted some pretty drastic changes in the team, it now runs faster and more offensively, I will soon update the threat list to deal with the new team, thanks again for the rates :)
