Let's start by saying I am not the greatest teambuilder, but I am getting better in my opinion. I feel I am a better battler but I feel this team is pretty decent and got me a good ways up the ladder before it reset.
I wanted this team to be based on a concept I saw with Sableye-Mega and Volcarona where Sableye-Mega used its Magic Bounce ability to keep stealth rocks off the field for Volcarona. I find offense to be more fun for me so I switched up the first Pokemon to Diancie-Mega.
Diancie-Mega @ Diancite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Earth Power
- Diamond Storm
To begin, as already stated I wanted to use Mega Diancie for it's offensive power and Magic Bounce ability. Besides having a useful ability Diancie can check some Volcarona counters such as SpDef Talonflame. Diancie can live 2 Max Attack Brave Birds plus stealth rocks, meaning it can switch in and 100% OHKO Talonflame with Diamand Storm. I have Earth Power for Heatrans and other steel types that try to switch in, plus Moonblast for a strong STAB move. Protect allows Diancie to reliably Mega Evolve without receiving damage or scout for moves.
Volcarona @ Life Orb
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Bug Buzz
- Hidden Power [Ground]
Next is the Pokemon I wanted to base this team around. Volcarona can be a great late game sweeper if a quiver dance can be set up. Volcarona provides the team with Offensive power while also being relatively bulky. Volcarona is used to switch into grass type attacks or after one of my members is knocked out. You generally want to force a switch and use quiver dance. Common switch-ins are Rotom-W, Heatran, and other bulky water and fire types. One issue is that this set doesn't have any form of recovery without roost, leftovers, or giga drain. I gave up the recovery for offensive power. After forcing a switch and getting up one quiver dance, HP Ground can OHKO SpDef Heatran after rocks, and Bug Buzz can OHKO 252 HP 0 SpDef Rotom-W after rocks and the standard Latias. Fire Blast is just Volcaronos strongest STAB move hitting many Pokemon hard if its a neutral hit.
Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Pain Split
- Will-O-Wisp
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
So I already have Diancie and Volcarona which leaves me pretty water weak as well as Talonflame weak if Diancie takes too much damage. I decided I needed a water switch in as well as a Talonflame counter. Naturally Rotom-W was the first thing to come to mind. It's one grass weakness is countered by Volcarona. Also Diancie's massive steel weakness is handled by Rotom-W. I went with the standard Rotom-W set to outspeed jolly Azumarill while also keeping as much bulk as possible. To quickly go over the set, Pain Split for recovery, Will-O-Wisp to burn physical attackers, Volt Switch to provide electric STAB while also providing switch initiative, and Hydro Pump for a strong water type move.
Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 172 HP / 252 SpA / 84 Spe
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]
Although Rotom-W and Volcarona can handle Diancie's steel weakness I wanted a Pokemon to trap pesky Ferrothorns and SpDef Mega Scizors that Rotom-W can't handle as well as a quick fairy killer. Magnezone is this Pokemon. What I love about Magnezone is it scared my opponent into even bringing in Scizor or Ferrothorn. One bad prediction can lead to a trapped, and then knocked out Pokemon. I went with the standard Choice Specs set. This set allows Magnezone to OHKO Mega Scizor and have a 69% chance to OHKO the standard Ferrothorn and 100% OHKO after rocks. Magnezone can also live 1 Flare Blitz from Talonflame and can OHKO it in return. For the set, Volt Switch allows for switch initiative, Thunderbolt for good accuracy STAB move, Flash Cannon for Fairies and STAB steel, and HP Fire for pesky steel types.
Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 248 HP / 168 Def / 76 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Endure
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
The next thing my team was missing was a solid stealth rocker. I wanted to be able to punish Volt Turn teams so I went with the rocky helmet rough skin monster that is defensive Garchomp. Garchomp acts as my stealth rocker while punishing rapid spins and U-Turns from the opponent. I decided on the defensive set with obviously stealth rock, earthquake for STAB and to hit Excadrills and Heatrans, Dragon Tail to force switchouts and rock damage, and finally I decided on endure to get even more rocky helmet and rough skin damage on physical type attackers.
Starmie @ Expert Belt
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Hydro Pump
- Psyshock
- Ice Beam
Finally I needed a way to get rid of rocks that manage to find their way onto the field through Diancie's magic bounce. I decided on Offensive Starmie since I had no ice type attacks on my team and I like hitting Landorus-T and Garchomp hard. Starmie can also act as a revenge killer if needed due to its high speed and can force switches on the rapid spin. Common water type walls like Venusaur can't switch in either due to the Psyshock. I ran an expert belt set as it still allows for OHKO potential on Garchomp and Landorus without taking life orb damage. I can occasionally bluff specs too since no item is revealed. I ran Hydro and Psyshock for strong STAB and ice beam for the Pokemons I have already stated.
I would appreciate any feedback for this team and any changes that people may make.
