Mega-Metagross Offense
[Peak 1387]
Hello everybody!
I'm Luca, and I'm new to Smogon, but I have been playing PS for a couple of months.
A couple of weeks ago, I decided I wanted to make a team around Mega Metagross, who is a really cool 'mon in the current meta.
Anyways, here we go!
Teambuilding Process
I wanted to build a team around Mega Metagross, so I started out with him. Standard All-Out Attacker set from Smogon.
The set I was running had trouble with bulky waters, like Slowbro, so I added a AV Raikou to deal with them. Raikou also helped with Metagross' matchup against Skarmory and Mandibuzz.
Metagross also takes heavy damage from Bisharp's Sucker Punch and Weavile's Knock Off, so I added AV Conkeldurr to ckeck the both of them.
At this point the team had a major problem the one and only Talonflame. Because of this, I added a defensive Landorus-T. Lando also came with the added benefit of rocks and pivoting capabilities.
Now that the team was close to finished, and since none of my other 'mons had recovery, I added Healing Wish Latias to give Metagross (and other 'mons sometimes too) a second chance if needed.
Lastly, I needed a Pokemon that could clean up after Metagross, Raikou, and Conkeldurr were out, so I added a Belly Drum Azumarill.
After testing the team for a while, I found that Azu wasn't pulling its weight,l so I replaced him with a scarfed Keldeo. Keldeo is also a form of speed control, something that my team lacked up until this point. I also changed the movesets of Landorus and Raikou a bit, and gave Raikou Choice Specs over the AV it had previously.
The Team
Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
Mega Metagross, being the pokemon I wanted to build around, was mandatory for this team :)
Meteor Mash is his main STAB, Zen Headbutt to hit Keldeo, Conkeldurr and the like, Earthquake and Ice Punch for coverage. Pretty standard set overall.
Raikou @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Shadow Ball
Raikou is an amazing 'mon. Able to run a multitude of sets with amazing coverage allows Raikou to be a top tier threat. I chose Raikou for this team because he uses STAB Thunderbolt to absolutely decimate bulky waters like Slowbro that Metagross cannot break through.
For example:
252 SpA Choice Specs Raikou Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Slowbro: 474-558 (120.3 - 141.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Also, my Metagross has trouble with Skarmory, and Mandibuzz to some extent, so Raikou fits the bill with calcs like these:
252 SpA Choice Specs Raikou Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 540-636 (161.6 - 190.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Raikou Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 108 SpD Mandibuzz: 378-446 (89.3 - 105.4%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 20 HP / 252 Atk / 236 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Poison Jab
- Knock Off

Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Poison Jab
- Knock Off
Conkeldurr is my main Bisharp/Weavile (and the occaisonal Scarf Tyranitar) check. Sure, if Metagross predicts the switch and hits with his respective coverage moves, he might be able to take one out, but outside of that, these guys can do heavy damage to Metagross, either killing him with prior damage or putting him in revenge-killing range.
To illustrate:
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Metagross: 187-221 (62.1 - 73.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Metagross: 234-276 (77.7 - 91.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Conkeldurr solves this problem with the magical Mach Punch. Also, as an added bonus, if you predict the switch to a Fairy or Psychic type, you can use Poison Jab or Knock Off, respectively.

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- U-turn
Ah, the majestic lion of OU. Landorus-T fufills three roles on this team: a bird check, a pivot, and a stealth rock setter. Landorus does all of this excellently, which is why I chose him over something like Jirachi with SR and U-Turn. Also, Lando's two weaknesses are covered well by the rest of the team, so he fits in pretty well.
Latias @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 76 HP / 180 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Healing Wish
Latias is such a good pokemon. I like her even more than Latios because of the added bulk and Healing Wish. Latias acts as both a defogger and a HW supporter on my team, while bringing some nifty resists to help patch up the rest of my 'mons.
Keldeo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Secret Sword
Keldeo is my replacement for BD Azu on this team. I think Keldeo is better in this position because he offers speed control and can be brought out multiple times in a match, while Azu can only BD once. Anyways, Keldeo, as stated earlier, is my form of speed control and a late-game cleaner after Metagross and the rest are finished. Moveset is pretty standard.
Threatlist
Ferrothorn walls this team to no end, bar Keldeo, but Keldeo will go down to a Power Whip or two, so... :(

Mega Alakazam outspeeds the entire team (again, bar Keldeo) dealing heavy damage or sweeping if Metagross/Raikou/Conkeldurr are weakened enough.
Probably some others but I can't think of anything now.
Conclusion
I really like this team, being the first one that has performed well for me.
I really want to improve, though, so please rate!
