Hello all this is my second RMT. I have recently gotten into competitive battling and am trying to do an RMT every two weeks with a new team that I have some success and fun with. This week I decided to use a playstyle that not many use, Sun. This team is a balance team that leans toward the more defensive side. The point of this team is to set up some rocks and depending on the enemies team have victini or venusaur destroy holes into the enemies team.
Without further ado the team at a glance:
Because I already gave a basic summary of how the team looks and works I want to give a quick reason for my choice of sun. A lot of people hate on ninetales and I find it to be such a cool pokemon, that is a pretty decent wall with the right moves and EV's. Next I will start doing the individual roles and summaries.
Ninetales (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drought
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 120 Def / 104 SDef / 36 Spd
Calm Nature
- Flamethrower
- Energy Ball
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect
Ninetales. You can not make a sun team without this awesome guy. Ninetales job is quite simple, his first and most important job is to change the weather to sun. After that if there are no other weather starters on the opposing team he usually ends up as a poke that comes into a physical threat and burns it. I have thought about doing double status in place of protect, and about changing energy ball to solarbeam. The nasty plot set is quite appealing, and it seems like it would do a lot more on my team, but I would lose a wall. I am also wondering about whether or not to put sunny day on this set to nullify any incoming weather starters. Any recommendations on a new set would be greatly appreciated, or even some minor tweaks would be nice.
Venusaur (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Modest Nature
- Growth
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sludge Bomb
Venusaur is another pokemon who is essential to this team. His set is really basic, but effective. Everyone knows what Venusaur does. He comes in sets up a growth or two and starts his sweep. My only problem with this set is lack of a heatran counter. I have tried the EV spread with attack EV's and earthquake instead of sludge bomb, but I found it to be less effective than the set I am using right now. Many have suggested sleep powder over sludge bomb and I was wondering what the consensus on it was. My nature of this venusaur is modest to help net some KO's, but I am sure that having a +Spe nature could help in outspeeding some threats. As I said before heatran can stop this set and force me switch out. I have wanted to try out volcarona in this spot, but I would lose a chlorophyll user.
Cresselia (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 228 Def / 32 SAtk
Bold Nature
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Moonlight
- Reflect
Cresselia is my dedicated physical wall. Although he is in a lower tier I find that he is incredibly effective wall. His recovery move benefits from the weather which is a large reason I picked him. I chose Ice Beam and HP Fire because ice beam is a clear helper with the occasional dragon matchup. Hp fire seems to be doing less for me overall, sometimes hitting some fortresses and ferrothorns. I have tried using psychic but it seems to have the same ineffectiveness. Suggestions for this moveslot would be really helpful. Reflect just to enhance his already good physical bulk. I have heard really good reviews of his dual screeners set but I do not know what coverage moves I would put on him. The EV's are very straightforward, as is the nature.
Heatran (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SDef / 8 Spd
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Protect
- Roar
- Stealth Rock
For this heatran I chose the SDef set. I was in need of a specially defensive wall and rock setter so I chose this monster. While being my special wall he also soaks outrages and most dragon attacks if needed. He has a really standard moveset however I was thinking of replacing protect or roar for some other move. I rarely use protect, and roar is somewhat useful but I think these moveslots could be used for something better. There isn't really much else to say about this guy. Any suggestions are really appreciated.
Tentacruel (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 244 Def / 248 HP / 16 Spd
Bold Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Scald
- Toxic Spikes
- Substitute
This is probably the most contested spot on the entire team. I found that I needed a spinner because of my two rock weak pokemon. Tentacruel found his spot on this team through his ability to set down some t spikes because your opponents pokemon being poisoned is always good. His EV's are there to have good physical bulk so he can check terrakion. I feel he does little for this team because his only attack is nerfed by sun. I really need a spinner and any suggestions would really be awesome.
Victini @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- V-create
- Trick/Zen Headbutt
This little guy kicks some serious ass. A lot of people underestimate victini in OU. Having used him under the sun his V-creates have an insane amount of power even not being banded. I needed a scarfer that would be useful if the sun wasn't up and venusaur could not outspeed certain threats. The first three moves are quite simple straight off smogon. The last move is what I need most advice on. I have switched between Zen headbutt and trick many times and have found them both to be really helpful. But I cannot replace any of the other moves because they are too important to the set. I don't know if going +spe would help me outspeed any key threats, any advice on that would be really helpful.
Well, this is the end of my RMT. I am still really noobish and need all the help I can get. I will respond to every post ASAP and discuss changes with you. Thank you for all the help in advance!
