RMT: OU Hail Team

This is my favorite of all of my OU teams i've used on the ladder and it has shown be some good fun, wins, and I feel it is worthy of a RMT.

TEAM AT A GLANCE

forretress.png

Mildly tipical hail team. Uses a mix of expected sets and un-expected sets to out-predict teams and make people double guess that next switch. Can even take the benefits of a sand storm team early on. Worth noting the the entire team is female to avoid the typical all male teams that may be carrying attract females trying to outsmart me.

The Lead

abomasnow-f.png

Abomasnow @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 6 HP/252 SAtk/252 Sp
Timid Nature (+ Spd/ - Atk)
- Blizzard
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Substitute

Why this pokemon?

With the obvious permanent hail that comes with Snow Warning, Abomasnow is a must on any hail team. Running the timid nature and the speed to help surpriningly out-speed pokes late game, and no need for any attack. When predicted right, this lead will sub on the opponents stealth rock, and start the sub-seeding cycle. If un-sure what to do, a protect is a good scouter for fire moves which I can then switch into Flygon or Walrein, and the Blizzard and take out Aero leads who do not stone edge. This pokemon can also come back late game to wall electric attacks, protect on the move switch to gain hp or sub on the switch, and sub-seed anything it can. Never considered to be a suicide lead for its ability to attract fire type moves.

The "OMG I HATE HAX"

478_froslass_1_f.png

Frosslas @ Brightpowder
Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 6 Def/252 SAtk/252 Sp
Timid Nature (+ Spd/ - Atk)
- Blizzard
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute
- Thunder wave

Why this pokemon?

Where to begin? With hail running, I get a 20% evasiveness, and brightpowder jumps it up to 30%. The idea of this froslass is to let it come in on a safe switch and substitute. While under the sub, the idea is to parahax with thunder wave. Parahax along with the 30% evasiveness combined with the hp to hit 4 subs before dying, not factoring stealth rock, gives Froslass it a 60% chance of NOT being hit. That alone makes Froslass a key player on my team and has got me out of quite a few tight spots. I choose the thunder bolt over spikes after noticing a large weakness to DD Gyrados on my team. Honestly, I even prefer the boltbeam combo this lets me set up over my least favorite entry hazard. Froslass also makes a good special sweeper as long as Blissly, Miltank, and Snorlax are already taken care of.

The Staller

walrein.png

Walrein @ Leftovers
Ability: Hail Body
EVs: 220 HP/240 Def/48 Sp
Bold (+ Def/ - Atk)
- Surf
- Toxic
- Protect
- Substitute

Why this Pokemon?

Well, nothing out of the ordinary here. Your everyday average Stallrein. Surf is choosen over blizzard for the type coverage with Abomasnow and Froslass already carrying blizzard. The idea here is to Toxic the opponent and then substitute and protect to stall while gaining the leftovers and hailbody recovery. Great synergy with Abomasnow's leech seed for maximum healing. With then given EVs, Walrein has a substitute over 100 hp to take on sciesmic toss. A must on any hail team.

The Hulk

068.png

Machamp @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 138 HP/120 Atk/252 Sp
Adamant (+ Atk/ - SpAtk)
- Attract
- Dynamic Punch
- Stone Edge
- PayBack

Why this Pokemon?

NOTE: Currently testing the Dynamic Punch, Payback, Rest, Sleep Talk set under the same EVs.

The funnest pokemon on this team. With No Guard and Dynamic Punch, very few people will leave their precious Blissy in on the switch. I take advantage of that by hitting a good payback on the over so common Rotom. Payback is a 2HKO on most Rotom, and a OHKO on Gengar. This leads people to think I have a good old Choice Band on this set, and show no fear to bring in their favorite steel wall. And there lies the beauty in this set. Running max speed EVs makes my Machamp faster then the standard Machamps misleading people who are accustom facing Machamp. With the Dynamic Punch off, I am free to continue their pain with Attract. With almost ALL of people leaving their auto-set male pokemon on Shoddy, Attract has no problem getting off. With Attracts 50% chance to do nothing, and Confusions 50% chance to hit itself, you can imagine how annoying this can be for the opponent. Stone edge is there for type coverage and to take advantage of Machamps No Guard and Leftovers is to negate the hail damage.

The Mixed steel/fire killer

flygon.png

Flygon @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 200 HP/100 SpcDef/80 Sp/ 130 SpcAtk
Mild (+ SpcAtk/ - Def)
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Roost

Why this Pokemon?

"Oh flygon, ok its gonna EQ with its silly choice item! So easy to predict!" WRONG! Where my Flygon lacks in the Speed or Attack boost from a choice item, it makes up for in surprise. This flygon is great to bring into a Skarm or Heatran. When you bring it on a Heatran, they WILL switch to either Skarm, or something else that resists EQ. Because of this, it is easy for me to predict and just hit and get the OHKO on Skarm with Fire Blast. Many people tend to bring out their Heatran thinking i'm locked into Fire Blast, and this is when I EQ for the OHKO. I am also able to just hit it with STAB Draco Meteor if I am unsure of what counter will be coming in. Roost is here for Late game recovery when I know the opponent is short of an Ice or Dragon type attack. I also tend to switch Flygon into Azelf leads to take the flamethrower directed at my Abomasnow, or the obvious thunderbolt from something else. The EVs on this may not be the best. I would love some advice to switching the EVs around to make it even more effective. The leftovers is to negate the hail damage.

The Spinning Wall

forretress.png

Forretress @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP/112Atk/144Def
Relaxed (+Def/ - Spd)
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Rapid Spin

Why This Pokemon?

When making any hail team, your team is subject a few things. 1. Stealth Rock. 2. Rock type attacks. 3. Tyranitar. My Forretress takes care of all of these. Rapid spin is to get rid of the highly used stealth rock. I am then open to set up my SR if I have the chance. Gyro ball combined with a relaxed nature lets me 2HKO Tyranitar before it can KO me. I originally meant to run Gyro Ball and Explosion on this set, but mis-clicked Gyroball. After a few battles, I decided to leave it. It helps with my opponent predicting my explosion and getting a free turn to set up with sub or a ghost type. Sadly, this Forretress runs leftovers to negate hail damage so Scarf Magezone is check mate for me.

Problems

I don'n have a phazer, so anything faster then my Froslass that can set up a speed and attack boost is a threat. I also don't really have a pokemon to take status. I have considered changing my Machamp to rest talk but I am reluctant.

Threat down.

Azelf: Not really a problem when faced as a lead. Switch during the stealh rock to Flygon and take out with Fire Blast. Can be a problem if running Nasty Plot.

Breloom: I have a pokemon on my team not named Froslass take the sleep, then I switch on the sub to frosslass and aviod the Focus Punch and sub my self and come back with blizzard.

Celebi: Taken care of by either my Abomasnow, Froslass, or Flygon. Can be taken out by Machamp if safely switched in.

Dugtrio: Flygon makes him run, take out by sub Froslass.

Electivire: Abomasnow can come in on the thungerbolt, Protect the crosschop, Machamp the next crosschop, and Dynamic punch to death.

Empoleon: Not that big of a deal. Froslass is generally my main pokemon for this thanks to the thunderbolt and making his powerful surfs miss.

Flygon: My Flygon's least favorite thing to get switched into. If running choice band, taken out by Froslass. Choice scarf posses a problem if Froslass is gone and its locked into EQ

Gengar: Walrein can take his none Tbolt attacks, and Machamp can take a shadowball andhit back with payback.

Gliscor: Easily taken down by Abomasnow or Froslass, or really anything on my team not named Forretress.

Gyarados: The bane of my team. Taunting DD Gyrados is check mate unless I can toxic stall. Best taken care of early with sub tbolt Froslass.

Heatran: Out predicted 90% of the time by my flygon, not much of a problem.

Heracross: Not a problem unless running Scarf. Flygon can take a hit or two and come back and fire blast.

Infernape: Correctly predicted, flygon can EQ it to win, Has trouble taking CB but isn't much of a problem these days.

Jirachi: Quite annoying when the Flench hax is around. Not a problem for Forretress unless running fire punch.

Kingdra: Walled by Walrein as long as it doesn't get to many DD under its belt.

Latias: Machamp can take a Dragon pulse and OHKO with payback, and the speed tie can win with Froslasses Blizzard.

Lucario: Flygon takes care of this easily.

Machamp: With my Machamp faster then most standard Machamps, makes a good counter on a safe switch.

Magnezone: Flygon can EQ or fireblast, Keep Forretress away from this thing.

Mamoswine: Forretress handles nicely with gyroball or EQ

Metagross: Out predicted as a lead with Subseeding Abomasnow, taken care of late game by Flygon.

Ninjask: Froslass tears it apart, even with speed boost.

Porygon-Z: Seeing as its a choice revenged killer, I just switch accordingly.

Rhyperior: Walrein takes care of him nicely with subsurf.

Roserade: One of my least favorite leads. Tend to just let him set up on abomasnow and Blizzard on the wake up while proceeding to rapid spin ASAP

Rotom-A: Out predicted by my Machamp 90% of the time.

Salamence: Froslass helps a lot. Abomasnow if not running flamethrower or Fire Blast.

Scizor: Flygon can take the bullet punches and predict accordingly on the switch.

Snorlax: Subseeded stall with Abomasnow or Machamps Dynamic Punch.

Starmie: Sub Froslass does quite well.

Suicune: Toxic + SUbseed if rest version.

Togekiss: Froslass all day with this thing.

Tyranitar: Forretress safe switch in = dead

Weavile: Machamp makes it flee and predict accordingly.

Yanmega: If set up, trouble. Tried to be take out by Froslass early before to many speed boosts and subs are stacked.

Zapdos:Froslass sub or hail stalling with Abomasnow/Walrein switching/Protecting.

Just to point out a few small facts, and to ask a question. Is this team for WIFI use, or Shoddy use? If this is for Shoddy, I doubt that alot of people will let you play with Brightpowder, seeing as they have a clause for items like that. Second, why is there no Super Fang on Walrein? If you add Super Fang, you don't even need to invest in any other EV's other than HP and the defensive stat of your choosing. You wouldn't have to worry about being walled by Ghosts seeing as most will die anyways from Hail. Abomasnow (obviously) has problems against (Anti)Lead Jirachi, but what lead doesn't nowadays? I can't really suggest anything to help with that problem, seeing as you NEED to use Abomasnow to really get Hail started, and SubSeed is the best set available. If this team is for WIFI use, I can see more than a few people giving you some grief over Brightpowder, and on Shoddy it's banned altogether. I would suggest something else that is unlikely to get hit (Jirachi) while also spreading out status effects. The reason I suggest Jirachi is because it's so versatile. You could use Body Slam/Thunder Wave, Iron Head, and then two moves to take care of any counters to your team. While reading this, I realized that you had no Pokemon to take status for the team, which can be a problem. I would suggest changing Machamp to a RestTalk version, seeing as Attract won't do you much good. Flygon looks alright, if a bit of a strange set overall. I am a bit iffy on Forretress seeing as it adds more to your Fire weakness. I can see a Machamp running through this entire team with just DynamicPunch and Payback.

I was un-aware with brightpowder being banned seeing as the team creator never stopped me. I do not wish to remove Froslass because even without brightpowder, the Parahax + Snow cloak is still a great combo.

Rest talk Machamp has been greatly considered. Honestly, it is better. My team would benefit from a status observer it would greatly reduce my weakness to lead Roserade. I just remember making this team and getting an attract off and its just fun to switch it up a bit.

Personally, I think Forretress is still worth it even with the added fire weakness. It takes care of being my Def wall and Flygon and Walrein do a fair job at my fire weakness. Until a mixape follows a heatran. Then, I have problems.

Forretress doesn't really take rock type attacks that well. Forry is neutral to rock and you're better off having Machamp of Flygon to take it. Speaking of which, those two are pretty much the only things holding your team together. If you lose Flygon, your only fire resist, scarftran will literally rape your team. And also, how are you supposed to bluff a choice band on Machamp when there's hail and leftovers recovery?

I remember facing this team on shoddy, and I remember my SubTran wreaking havoc, and KO'ing about 5 of your Pokemon. (Including when I switched out.) Heatran basically out speeds your whole team, and it does a pretty good chunk to each of the roster. The only things you could do is possibly come in with Frosslas and Thunderbolt, which doesn't break the sub. Or come in with Walrein and Surf the sub, but Heatran would have possibly Toxic'd/ Fire Blast'd and taken a pretty good chunk out of Walrein or infected it, then leading to SubStall for Toxic to take its toll. And about predicting Subtran with Flygon, you already lose Flygon, because your Flygon does not run enough speed to out speed 278 Speed. Another Pokemon that I see you'll have problems with is the "Specially Based MixApe". Theres not really many things you could do since your using a Ice team, but you could possibly put on a Heatran of your own,
Heatran (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 6 Atk/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Naive nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Fire Blast
- Dragon Pulse
- Earth Power
- Explosion
Pretty standard, Dragon Pulse and Earth Power do a lot to Infernape, and Earth Power kills other Heatran's, but you must predict, instead of using Fire Blast if you know they have a Heatran, use Earth Power.

If you really want to bluff a choice item on Flygon, you need to take away his leftovers. Give him a Yache Berry or an Expert Belt; if you keep him as is, as soon as you switch him in with stealth rocks up your opponent knows that there are no choice items.

Also, if you're desperate for a phazer, I would suggest replacing Forretress with Tentacruel:

Tentacruel, Calm with Leftovers
252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SpD
Liquid Ooze

-Toxic Spikes
-Rapid Spin
-Surf/Blizzard
-Sludge Bomb/Hidden Power (Electric)/Knock Off

This will leave you free to run Roar on Walrein rather than Toxic.

The alternative would be to run Swampert instead of Forretress with

-Earthquake
-Blizzard
-Stealth Rocks
-Roar

However, a hail team, with it's constant damage to the opponent, can really benefit from toxic spikes, and Walrein will hate your opponent's toxic spikes, which Tentacruel can easily pick up.

BPasser can completely ruin a team without PHazer, especially stall oriented teams.

Swampert is the best pokémon you can add on a hail team. Roar, Stealth Rock, Heatran perfect counter, TTar counter, Thunder wave immunity, Ground/Ice coverage, even more powerful with Blizzard. I would run it over Flygon.

Swampert (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 240 HP/216 Def/52 SAtk
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Blizzard
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Roar

Also, spikes is imo the only reason to use Froslass over Rotom-F. Rotom-F is easily one of the best Gyarados counter there is, OHKOing him every time with STABed TBolt and taking little damage from Waterfall, even dragon danced. If you miss the paralysis status, you can use Discharge over TBolt.
Rotom-F also makes a fine status absorber with the Sleep talker set. I personnaly use it as a Scizor counter too, taking very little damage for U-turn, Bullet punch, and immunity to Superpower, while 3HKO him with TBolt. The only things that can really beat Rotom-F are ennemy's shadow balls (offensive Rotom forms, Gengar), TTar and Weavile. All this things are taken care by your machamp. Finally, the ground immunity is welcome if you drop Flygon.

Rotom-f @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP/120 Def/136 SDef
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Blizzard
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Thunderbolt/Discharge
---

At this point, you will have a big problem with Infernape, and Ludicolo, so Tentacruel is the best option over forretress, Toxic spiking to help Walrein, taking fire attack directed to Abo very well, and keeping the rapid spin utility.

Tentacruel (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP/120 Def/136 SDef
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Surf
- Toxic Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Poison Jab
---

Poison Jab is a better option than Sludge Bomb imo, because it will always 2HKO Ludicolo, a very hard pokémon to take down with hail stall, if it manages to come in before your Toxic Spikes (Walrein is out of the question for poisoning him, because of Energy Ball/Grass Knot). Sludge Bomb fails to do so because of Ludicolo Special bulkyness. It's the same deal with opposite Abomasnow, who are much more vulnerable on their physical side, and CM Celebi.

So, with Toxic Spikes, Toxic becomes an option on Walrein. You can keep it to cripple opponents Latias and Zapdos, you can use Super Fang to kill your opponent faster (keeping Surf for not being totally helpless against leftovers Ghosts), or you can use Roar if you want to run STABed Surf on Swampert. You can also consider a Blizzard/EQ combination.

Finally, since your team is mostly stall oriented, you should use a defensive EV spread on Abo, something like :

Abomasnow (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP/4 Atk/252 SDef
Sassy nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Leech Seed
- Blizzard
- Substitute
- Protect

With this set, Abo will be slower than most of the metagame, so it doesn't matter if you run 0 IV Speed to always have the weather advantage against leading Hippowdon, destroying them with 100% accurate Blizzard.
As Smogon said about this spread : "Many Pokemon, specifically bulky Water-types and Electric-types, will fail to break your Substitute with their only neutral hits, allowing you to freely Leech Seed and stall them out."

Seed Bomb and Wood Hammer deals with CM Bulky Waters very effienciently, but protect is really useful too.
Hope this helped ;)
