RMT Phase 1: Building on Paper

Hello Smogon, Pulse here with my first RMT. As we all know, the first step in building a team is working it out on paper, so this is what we are going to do. I'll list my team and each of the Pokémon's function/contribution to the team and then we can take a step back and look at how the team looks from afar and try to make some changes. Please note that I am very open to ideas so long as they are logical and not douchebag-ish. So, enough talk, let's see the team:

@ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 42 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
Nature: Adamant
- Return
- Brave Bird
- Close Combat
- U-Turn/Pursuit

After reading/lurking for a while, I heard that Staraptor can be an extremely powerful Pokémon for teams unprepared for it. Its ability to pose as an early threat and Intimidate make it an ideal lead. The EVs let it outrun base 95 Speed Pokémon with a neutral nature—to be honest, I've never ran into a Jolly Heracross, so until I do I plan on keeping the EVs the same. As for the moveset, the first three moves are a given, but I really want to use both of the last one. I think I'll test it out with Pursuit first (since it can help with picking off ScarfGar's locked into Shadow Ball), and then see how U-Turn does. I have a feeling I'll like U-Turn more, but who knows. :naughty:

dpmfa385.png
@ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 240 HP / 56 Atk / 76 Def / 136 Spe
Nature: Impish
- Wish
- U-Turn
- Zen Headbutt
- Body Slam/Reflect

One thing I picked up from the analysis is that Staraptor works great with Wish support, and I'm sure with all the Substitutes Mismagius will be creating, it won't mind the support either. So after looking at the potential candidates for Wish support, the 100 base stats of Jirachi were too good to pass up. Both Mismagius and Staraptor can switch in on EQ and take nothing from them, and for those who like to Close Combat Jirachi, Mismagius has bad news for them as well. Once again I'm not too sure on the last move, but Reflect seems like a much better option. Opinions?

@ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 76 HP / 180 Atk / 252 Def
Nature: Impish
- Force Palm
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch
- Whirlwind/Thunderpunch

I'm very excited to test this set, as I never have, and god does this team despise Tyranitar. Knock Off can REALLY help against Choice/Leftover users, and according to the analysis Blissey goes down in just two hits after her precious Lefties are gone. I went with Force Palm > Cross Chop since I am looking for a more reliable counter-er Pokémon. It also beats up on Weavile, and once those two are gone Mismagius's two main counters are out of the way and she can take the stage and sweep. I think Thunderpunch will do me better than Whirlwind, since it will scare off Gyarados—in fact I'm almost 100% sure it will be more useful. Someone want to tell me if/why I'm wrong?

dpffa350.png
@ Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 26 SpAtk
Nature: Bold
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Surf
- Ice Beam

Every team needs a status absorber right? With Marvel Scale activated, this thing can be pretty tough to take down. I'm wondering if I should aim for EVs that can take down Garchomp in one hit, but for now I think I'll just test this set out. I've never, ever used a Milotic before so I'm not sure if this will do well or not. Some advice would be much appreciated for this spot. I am actually looking for something to replace it and better deal with Garchomp while still having the role of a Status Absorber. Can Blissey take Status enough or do I need a Sleep Talker?

dpffa242.png
@ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 148 HP / 252 Def / 108 SpA
Nature: Bold
- Ice Beam
- Seismic Toss
- Softboiled
- Thunderwave

Blissey. Not too much to say here as it is very standard... It'll be VERY useful for handling Special Threats, which is why I plan on using it. Not sure what else to say here but that this is the best Special Wall in the game.

dpffa429.png
@ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 116 HP / 158 SpAtk / 236 Spe
Nature: Bold
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Fighting]

Mismagius is the most dangerous Pokémon that people don't know how to deal with. Of course, it is not invincible, but god damnit it is close. I'd go as far as calling it the best SubCM Pokémon not in Ubers. Unlike Raikou, it can easily take on Blissey 1 v. 1 and afterwards completely destroy the rest of my opponent's team. The EVs outrun Jolly Garchomp, and I put the extra 20 into Special Attack giving it five more Special Attack points. I'd almost go as far as saying that this is the only Pokémon I am 100% set on keeping.

Well, that is what I'm planning out. Lemme hear your ideas. After we make some changes, I'll be testing it out on Shoddy and then returning to talk about its success/problems/shit that I just can't stop. Thanks Smogon!

very solid team

try toxic on milotic instead of ice beam
and aromatherapy over thunder wave on bliss
u-turn does better on staraptor from what i have seen with choice staraptor. He is absolutely beast though.
reflect is better on jirachi if you are try to pass wish more reliably.
another thing you can try to put on choice banded staraptor is quick attack, because none of your pokemon are terribly fast besides missy.

i'm not sure i'll take aromatherapy over t-wave. keep in mind that your team isn't too quick and t-wave really helps with that. milotic's a status absorber anyways.

this team is too defensive for my liking. i would prefer something like infernape over harry. this team's very tanky yet there's no residual damage here. your have 2 sweepers, one has a choice item, the other one takes time to set up. i think that spells trouble.

I like your team, its got style, but if your planning to use this team on ladder, Man your gunna get the shit beat out of you by all the bog pokes and 600+ BS pokes. Its just nearly impossible to win without using at least two 600+ pokes. Thats just my experience, especially when making teams with unique pokes.

That Mismagius doesn't outspeed Chompy. Timid nature and 236 EVs is what your after, seeing as HP Fighting limits you to a 30 Spd IV.

Ah, I remember the EV Spread looked different from last time. Thanks a bunch for reminding me man. Also, at animenagai, I think I sort of agree with you, and I plan on ditching probably Milotic and Blissey and test some other ideas out. I really need some speed on this team.

Your entire team is walled by Skarmory. (Mismagius gets WWed out all day long) I would suggest running Thunder on Jirachi to help out a little bit, because if Milotic is dead, there is no way you can kill Skarmory at all.

Also what are you using all of the paralysis support for? Body Slam or Thunder on Jirachi, Force Palm on Hariyama, Thunder-wave on Blissey... Because your team doesn't benefit as much as other team would from this much paralysis support, I would suggest running Aromatherapy on Blissey, as it would be more useful than Thunder-wave on your team.

First, Force Palm is just there because it is a reliable attack. Secondly, I'm not running Body Slam on Blissey. As for Blissey, I plan on switching it out for a faster Pokémon that can take Skarmory with easy. Any suggestions? I don't mind adding completely new Pokémon in certain places. Well, I am going to probably change Blissey and maybe even Milotic because I really don't see what they contribute to the team (Blissey does wall well, but I don't want this team to just sit there).

If you guys have any ideas that would rock.

Try running Choice Band Snorlax. It is a special tank that can take on those threats, but also kill them. It would benefit from your Jirachi's Wish support, and the paraylsis you use. I would keep Milotic though, its your team's only real answer to Garchomp, and taking sleep is important.

Thats a pretty damn good idea man... I'll test it out on Shoddy right now. That'll help me find more kinks in the team.

Ugh.. Well as usual, my team sucks. I tested it on Shoddy and it didn't do well at all. Some huge changes need to be made. I really want to base this team around Mismagius, but the team hasn't helped her set up at all. Hariyama has been the only one doing well, while all the other ones haven't worked at all. Any ideas guys?

I can see a change you can make. Mamoswine, rips your first three pokemon in half, so I'd switch out Jirachi for Bronzong. With this set: S-rock, Hypnosis, Gyro Ball and Reflect. It can set up reflect like jirachi did but also handle mamoswine much better, S-rock because I notice your team doesn't have any switch in hurties. Hypnosis is obvious stopping any sweeper in there tracks and Gyro ball hurts everything badly, particularly Mamoswine.

Does anyone think that team is better? It still has Hariyama and Mismagius, but I have a Moltres lead, CBDugtrio, Calm Cresselia, and a SD LO Scizor. In the testing of it, once again only one of the new ones did well, and that was Moltres. Any suggestions on what to do with Dugtrio, Cress, and Scizor? I was thinking of adding a Spinner, possibly a CBWeavile, and something to replace Cresselia's role. Cress hasn't done that bad to be honest...

Your team from PE2k is a little scarier, especially your Scizor. I'm leikin' the EV spread of it, but more importantly, you might wanna keep the Elemental Punches for Yama just in case you ran in Gliscor and Gyara.

Ok, I dont know what you already changed, so I am just going to rate the original team and you can try it out from there. From what I can see, the team is Staraptor, Jirachi, Hariyama, Milotic, Mismagius, and Blissey. Mismagius isnt very bulky at all, so I would reccomend replacing it Gengar. Gengar dosent need setup to be an instant threat. Since Garchomp potentially rips your team apart, you might want to drop zen headbutt on Jirachi for ice punch. This way, you can come in and kill it while its stuck to outrage. Also ditch body slam for thunder like maddog said. Infernape looks like it could hurt you a bit too, so maybe replacing Staraptor with Gyarados would be a good idea.

I don't agree Tacho. Mismagius is not only my favorite Pokemon, and it seems to be one of the OP's, it has a very different purpose from Gengar, and in my views serves a better one.

Yea, Gengar ≠ Mismagius. Much, MUCH different Pokémon. Mismagius is a CMer, Gengar is a plain sweeper. I'm not saying that one is better than the other, but I've found that more teams prepare for Gengar and less for Mismagius.
