RMT The writer's notes - a doubles team without set ups

THE WRITER'S NOTES

UUojOSj.jpg

Hey everyone, as I was playing emerald and fire red in android -after 5 or so years- I noticed something quite interesting: in the past, way before I entered competitive gaming in PS, I did not use any set ups in my Pokemon. While not even wearing bulk up, my Blaziken and it's circumstantial comrades, used to brake through elite 4 when no more than four members were no more than lv 40. As a result, since gen 6 destroyed my previous 2 dragons and 2 fighting Pokemon team [score around 1900+], I wandered around the new spore resistant and fairy infested metagame.

Having tested combinations with zard y, rotom-wash, -my beloved and now useless- volcarona, machamp, manaphy, -now heavily affected- breloom, and many; I came up with a quite unusual, but effective team for me.

The main characteristics of the new team that I usually overlooked and bested in gen 5:

  • Two choice item pokemons (Landorus-T - Choice Scarf, Talonflame - Choice Band; really nothing special with sash support, in gen V)
  • Two wide guard users (Hitmontop and Aegislash; I had only Machamp in gen 5)
  • Two intimidate users (Hitmontop and Landorus-T; I usually swept through these teams without any problem in gen 5, as my physical attackers were really support or utility -Machamp with dynamic punch and wide guard, and Breloom with spore)
The team:

Okonkwo (Talonflame) @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Tailwind

This is the typical set up of Talonflame. It really comes in handy, as it 1HKOs a huge number of threats (even neutral ones, as Sylveon). It is the main switch in prevent of will-o-wisp and accompanies Landorus-Therian -earthquake- and Hitmontop -helping hand-. It is part of the main offensive towards trick room teams with Azumarill, Aegislash, and at times Hitmontop). Eventual tailwind.

Switches:

Water - Azumarill
Rock - Aegislash
Electric - Landorus-T

CatInAHotTinRoof (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Superpower
- U-turn

I used to be against choice items, but Zard y, Talonflame, Greninja and many others who it wouldn't 1HKO without choice scarf have made it quite useful. The synergy with Hitmontop (wide guard and intimidate), Thundurus-I (inmune), talonflame (inmune) and Aegislash (wide guard and shuca berry) gives the team its offensive power.

Switchs:

Ice - Aegislash
Water - Azumarill

Frederic Henry (Hitmontop) (M) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Atk / 60 Def / 60 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Wide Guard
- Helping Hand
- Close Combat

Frederic is a great team player:
  • Allows Landorus-T to kill defiant Bisharp via fake out and earthquake
  • Wideguards the team
  • Strengthens Talonflame and, eventually, Aegislash's shadow ball
  • Intimidates
  • Optional switch-in, as its defensive EVs and sitrus berry allow to take a few hits
Switchs:

Ghost - Azumarill
Flying - Aegislash
Fairy - Azumarill
Psychic - Aegislash and Azumarill

aegislash-blade.jpg

Hamlet's plot (Aegislash) @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 112 SAtk / 100 SDef
Quiet Nature
IVs: NaN Spd
- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Wide Guard
- King's Shield

It is the other team player i.e. wide guard user and main switch. This EV spread allows its survival through almost anything (thanks to wide guard and shuca berry) but zard y's fire blast. It is the defensive pivot, with Hitmontop, who allows me destroying any multi-target attacked based pokemon.

thundurus-incarnate.jpg

Adriano (Thundurus) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
Shiny: Yes
Happiness: 0
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Protect

Adriano is the front-man who allows Azumarill (Landorus-T's usual switch in) to sweep. It also provides the much needed boltbeam coverage and hits quite hard with it's unexpected t-bolt, since most would wide guard a a Quake-Discharge combination. We all know the effects of HP ice in Landorus and Garchomp.

Switchs:

Rock - Aegislash and hitmontop
Ice - Aegislash

1566.png

Nathanael (Azumarill) @ Life Orb
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Atk / 4 SDef
Brave Nature
IVs: NaN Spd
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Aqua Tail
- Protect

It is the other main sweeper, who I really used to hate with my past team. The life orb allows to 1HKO threats that would otherwise sweep it in the following turn, I'll add a list the next time I check the damage calculator and amaze myself with the difference that it makes in the fast-paced doubles metagame.

Switchs:

Electric: Landorus-T
Grass: Aegislash
Poison: Aegislash

Strategies:
(Option depends on opposite team's pokemon, as there's more than one option for each kind of match)

Zard-y's sun teams:
Rock slide Cat and either
1. Okwonko flareblitz 2. hitmontop fake out 3. Adriano thunder wave

Hail teams:
Frederic Henry's fake out/close combat, Cat to lure mamoswine and mega-abomasnow's ice shard - switch to Hamlet or nathaniel
Okwonko's Flare Blitz or Brave bird and Cat's scarfed superpower (after defeating ice shard users)

Trick room teams:
Okwonko and Frederic Henry (non-ghost setter or gourgeist)
Cat and Adriano (U-turn to Nathaniel or Hamlet, or kill-it-before-it-lays-TRs)
Nathaniel and Hamlet (Fucking dusclops)
Nathaniel and Okwonko (DUSCLOOOOPS N SHIT)

Rain teams:
Okwonko Brave Bird and Frederic Henry Fake out and/or wide guard
Adriano thunderbolt and Frederic Henry Fake out

Main concern: FREAKING ROTOM WASH

I can't really counter it with anything but keeping both pokemon's attack aimed to it in the same turn, mainly Adriano's thunderbolt and Frederic Henry's fake out. I'm considering mega-venasaur and others, but the team synergy really misses any change :(

Pwnemon also suggested me a similar set for talonflame, but with will-o-wisp, which I'm trying out now. The thing is, I really miss the sure OHKO on conkeldurr and others with choice band.

Azumarill's speed reference is quite a charm, since it allows me to play talonflame and Azumarill without fearing a rock slide/stone edge from tyranitar.

Also, I'm discerning between aegislash/ferrothorn and hitmontop/venasaur-mega to supply the water/electric weakness in the team.

Thanks for the critics, man

Guess I can live with the fear of thundurus out-speeding my flare blitz and not being OHKO

Edit:

I'm currently testing a defensive ferrothorn with the exact EVs to guarantee a OHKO on rotom-w, specially defensive aegislash with the exact EVs to guarantee OHKO on mamoswine and 2HKO gardevoir-mega, abomasnow-mega and others

Defensive Ferrothorn to OHKO Rotom-W (Rays Ferro but with Def EVs instead of Spdef)
ferrothorn.gif

Ferrothorn @ Lum Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 52 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect
204+ Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 24 Def Rotom-W: 306-360 (100.6 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Specially Defensive Aegislash to OHKO Mamoswine and 2HKO Mega Gardevoir
aegislash-blade.gif

Aegislash @ Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 208 SAtk / 48 SDef
Calm Nature
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Ball
- Wide Guard
- King's Shield
208 SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mamoswine: 426-504 (100.4 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
or the common 224 HP / 0 Spdef Scarf Mamo
176 SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 224 HP / 0 SpD Mamoswine: 420-494 (100.7 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Honestly though, you're probably best off running max special attack aegislash
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Gardevoir: 248-294 (89.2 - 105.7%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

Hey, Rams! Your team is actually pretty solid; I remember playing against you on the ladder a few days ago and you were a tough matchup! :]

I'll have to agree with my boy KyleCole; you do not want to be choice locked into a support move such as Tailwind due to the fact you will be forced to switch out, giving your opponent the opportunity to double target one of your Pokémon. Seeing as you already have a Scarfed Landorus-T, the idea of having two Choice item users can be detrimental to your team as two of your Pokémon will be locked into just one move. Therefore, I suggest giving Talonflame a Life Orb instead of a Choice Band as LO Talonflame still has the ability to deal a large amount of damage while having the freedom to choose any of its four chosen moves. If you do consider using Life Orb Talonflame, I recommend giving him Quick Guard over U-Turn for protection against an incoming Fake Ous from Hitmontop and Medicham-Mega, Aqua Jet from Azumarill, Prankster Pokémon, and even Brave Bird from an opposing Talonflame. Finally, one tiny nitpick that KyleCole has also mentioned; you should use an Adamant nature instead of a Jolly nature on Talonflame as he already outspeeds the majority of the Pokémon in the Smogon Doubles metagame. Trust me, you're going to want that extra offensive firepower on Talonflame.

Aegislash looks fine for the most part, but the one thing I would improve is to change its EV spread to 252 HP / 180 SAtk / 76 SDef for increased offensive capability while also surviving a Heat Wave from Timid Mega-Charizard-Y in the Sun. The 180 SAtk EVs when combined with the Quiet nature allow Aegislash to OHKO Max HP Mega-Gengar 93.8% of the time, while also allowing him to OHKO Jolly Terrakion 100% of the time. Not to mention that Aegislash will be able to 2HKO most Fairy, Rock, Ghost, and Psychic-types, notably Max HP Mega-Mawile.

You've already pointed out that you have a gaping weakness against Rotom-Wash, resisting all of Talonflame's attacks, immune to EQ, and he can easily take out Azumarill and Talonflame with STAB Thunderbolt while taking care of Lando-T with STAB Hydro Pump. I believe Shaymin-Sky would greatly reduce this problem, and with that said he should replace Azumarill as one of your main sweepers.

492-sky.gif

Shaymin-Sky @ Life Orb
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Seed Flare
- Air Slash
- Earth Power
- Protect
A STAB Seed Flare from Modest LO Skymin is a surefire OHKO against Rotom-Wash, and he basically decimates any Pokémon that doesn't resist his attacks, not to mention you even have an 80% chance of getting a -2 Special Defense drop against the opponent. You can even OHKO the standard 4 HP Jolly Landorus-Therian with STAB Seed Flare; this just shows you how powerful Skymin can be. STAB Air Slash provides great coverage against Fighting-types and Grass-types such as Hitmontop and Venusaur-Mega while also having a 60% chance of getting a flinch! Thundurus + Skymin have amazing synergy due to the fact Thundurus can paralyze the opponent with Thunder Wave as Skymin proceeds to use Air Slash, giving the opponent a stunning 85% chance of not attacking. Earth Power is extremely useful against the likes of Heatran and other Fire-types, OHKOing Heatran given that he doesn't carry a Shuca Berry. If you're wondering why I'm choosing a Modest nature over a Timid nature on Shaymin-S, it is simply because Skymin will still have the ability to outspeed most Pokémon in the Smogon Doubles meta, hitting a solid base 111+ speed mark with a maximum Speed EV investment. Besides, you still possess speed control with Talonflame's Tailwind and the Thunder Wave from Thundurus; Skymin is much more devastating with that added Special Attack boost.

Overall, your team is pretty good! Hope I helped, and good luck. :D

- Brave Bird

Aegislash @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 180 SAtk / 76 SDef

- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Wide Guard
- King's Shield

492-sky.gif

Because of midterms, I really forgot about this post hehe.

I was using a ferrothorn with the exact EVs to OHKO rotom-w every time and as another TR counter

598_Ferrothorn.png

Frederic Henry (Ferrothorn) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 172 Atk / 252 HP / 84 SDef
Adamant Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect

I found myself quite a few times mixing it with aegislash, as a stalling-heat-wave-wideguarded-leech-seeding-double-protect-terror-of-TR duo, but shaymin-s seems really interesting. Specially since I found some guy named surprise who played my team (nicknames included, LOL) and managed to beat me twice, mainly thanks to hitmontop... GOD I MISS IT -I'll put up hitmontop and shaymin s and see what happens, altough i'll surely miss azumarill's sheer power.

Edit: SP DEF N DEF WALLS, FTW

Also, I got into this set of talonflame, as will o whisp comes in pretty handy sometimes Quick guard could be really useful, so I'll check it out.

Talonflame_(dream_world).png

Okonkwo (Talonflame) @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect

At some point -I think Pwnemon- make me realize that my team does not really benefits from tail wind: talonflame is too frail to survive (I'm not doing sashes, as in my latios from gen V again... DAMN YOU KHAN) and TR is way more seen recently.

oh, btw, I changed azumarill to this set, because of KyleCole's recomendations

azumarill.png

Nathanael (Azumarill) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 160 HP / 96 Spd
Serious Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Waterfall
- Protect

EDIT: I'm taking timid shaymin just because of landorus + shaymin without fearing greninja

Oh and now i have three weaknesses to rock and ice :D
