Rotom-W (1/2) (New Format)

[SET]
name: Bulky
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Nasty Plot
move 4: Dark Pulse / Will-O-Wisp
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Levitate
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 84 Def / 108 SpA / 4 SpD / 60 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* This standard Rotom-W set combines its ability to take hits, pivot, and pose an offensive threat.

* Volt Switch is an important pivoting option on Rotom-W. While other Electric-type moves such as Thunderbolt and Discharge are viable, they do not have the utility of Volt Switch in creating momentum and generating positive matchup.

* Nasty Plot is a critical move on Rotom-W for its ability to boost its damage and pose an offensive threat. It is possible to overlook it in favor of a second Electric-type STAB move, but Nasty Plot provides a completely different utility and gives Rotom-W ability to pose a real offensive threat.

* Dark Pulse is a move that hits Dragapult and can be used as Max Darkness to drop the foe's Special Defense. On this set, it should only be used in conjunction with Nasty Plot.

* Will-O-Wisp lets Rotom-W cripple physical attackers at cost of offensive coverage.

* Sitrus Berry is the best item for letting Rotom-W stay as healthy as possible after the Nasty Plot for increased Dynamax efficiency.

* Iapapa Berry and other items are passable options if Sitrus Berry is contested due to Item Clause.

EV Spreads
========

* 252 HP / 124 Def survives a +2 Life Orb Mimikyu Play Rough. 252 HP / 84 Def survives a +1 Life Orb Max Overgrowth from Gyarados with Dynamax. 252 HP / 148 Def survives 2 Libero Cinderace High Jump Kick with Sitrus Berry.

* 60 Speed EVs let Rotom-W outspeed Adamant max Speed Tyranitar as well as neutral max Speed base 60s. 84 Speed EVs outspeed uninvested Mimikyu. Minimal investment in Speed is recommended if going for both the defensive and defensive benchmarks.

* 108 Special Attack EVs with Modest nature let Rotom-W OHKO Dynamaxed Gyarados with Max Lightning based on Volt Switch. 156 Special Attack EVs with Modest nature OHKO uninvested Dragapult with Max Darkness, and thus OHKO dynamax Dragapult with +2 Max Darkness. 180 Special Attack EVs with Modest nature OHKO uninvested Dynamaxed Togekiss and 252 HP / 0 SpD Corviknight with +2 Max Lightning based on Volt Switch.

* EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA Modest hits all the defensive benchmarks, and gets the OHKO on Gyarados.

* EVs: 252 HP / 84 Def / 156 SpA / 4 SpD / 12 Spe Modest hits the Gyarados defensive benchmark and the Dragapult KO.

* EVs: 252 HP / 68 Def / 180 SpA / 4 SpD / 4 Spe Modest hits all the offensive benchmarks, and remaining EVs are dumped into Defense to improve its ability to take physical attacks from Mimikyu, Gyarados, Darmanitan-G, and others.

* EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD Bold maximizes physical bulk. It should be used with Will-O-Wisp and is a viable spread for sets that forgo Nasty Plot.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Thunderbolt / Discharge
move 4: Dark Pulse / Trick
item: Choice Specs
ability: Levitate
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]

* Choice Specs lets Rotom-W hit as hard as possible with its good STAB coverage.

* Volt Switch is a mandatory pivoting option.

* Dark Pulse is a move that hits Dragapult and can be used as Max Darkness to drop the foe's Special Defense.

* An additional Electric-type moves such as Thunderbolt and Discharge allow Rotom-W to deal electric-type damage without being forced to switch out. Thunderbolt allows Rotom-W to get the most out of the Choice Specs.

* Trick can be used to cripple defensive Pokemon such as Snorlax and Ferrothorn.

EV Spreads
========

* Maximum Special Attack let Rotom-W OHKO uninvested Dragapult with Dark Pulse.

* 60 Speed EVs let Rotom-W outspeed Adamant max Speed Tyranitar as well as neutral max Speed base 60s. 84 Speed EVs outspeed uninvested Mimikyu. Otherwise, minimal investment in Speed is recommended because a slow Volt Switch can be more advantageous in the mirror matchup.

* 252 HP / 124 Def always survives a +2 Life Orb Mimikyu Play Rough. 252 HP / 84 Def survives a +1 Life Orb Max Overgrowth from Gyarados.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Discharge / Thunderbolt / Will-O-Wisp
move 4: Trick / Dark Pulse
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Choice Scarf allows Rotom-W to outspeed important Airstream sweepers, namely Gyarados and Togekiss.

* Volt Switch is a mandatory pivoting option on Rotom-W. It also prevents loss of momentum from being locked into a move.

* Dark Pulse is a move that hits Dragapult and can be used as Max Darkness to drop the foe's Special Defense.

* An additional Electric-type moves such as Thunderbolt and Discharge allow Rotom-W to deal electric-type damage without being forced to switch out. Discharge has an important chance to paralyze, but Thunderbolt has chance to do more damage.

* Trick can be used to cripple defensive Pokemon such as Snorlax and Ferrothorn.

* Will-O-Wisp can be a decent utility move, especially in conjunction with Trick because it can be momentum draining to lock into a status move.

[SET]
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Discharge / Thunderbolt
move 4: Dark Pulse
item: Assault Vest
ability: Levitate
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 180 SpA / 12 SpD / 60 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Assault Vest lets Rotom-W trade favorably against Togekiss, Lapras, opposing Rotom-W, and Primarina, and retain the ability to switch moves.

* Volt Switch is a mandatory pivoting option.

* Discharge allows Rotom-W to deal strong Electric-type damage without being forced to switch out. Discharge has an important chance to paralyze, but Thunderbolt gets important offensive benchmarks, such as being able to 2HKO Dynamaxed Togekiss after Stealth Rock damage.

* Dark Pulse is a move that hits Dragapult and can be used as Max Darkness to drop the foe's Special Defense.

EV Spreads
========

* 12 SpD EVs let Rotom-W avoid a 2HKO from unboosted Togekiss Max Starfall.

* 60 Speed EVs let Rotom-W outspeed Adamant max Speed Tyranitar as well as neutral max Speed base 60s. 84 Speed EVs outspeed uninvested Mimikyu. Otherwise, minimal investment in Speed is recommended because a slow Volt Switch can be more advantageous because this set does not have the ability to outspeed the opposing Rotom and KO it with a +2 Max Lightning.

* Remaining EVs should be dumped into Special Attack.

[General Team Options]

* Ask not what Rotom-W's partners can do for it - ask what it can do for them.

* Rotom-W appreciates teammates to cover its weakness to Mold Breaker Excadrill and Grass-types. Strong attackers are great at taking advantage of free switches from Volt Switch, but every Pokemon appreciates it.

Excadrill Checks: :corviknight: :ferrothorn: :hippowdon:

Good work, way to be the change you wanna see :psysly:

Few things to consider
1. Bulky spread should have a max defense spread. Or at least one that can take things like Band Darmanitan Superpower.
2. On Choice Specs, Thunderbolt is the standard over Discharge. Hitting as hard as possible to turn 2HKOs to OHKOs is the goal. Discharge is fine as a secondary slash.
3. I dont like the defensive investment on Specs as a main spread. Its absolutely not a main spread, its usually fully HP/SpA with speed investment as needed. You should have spreads as follows: Main (High or Max HP/SpA), midspeed spread (creep to 60 or so), high speed spread, and your defense investment one can be fine as another alternate spread.
4. I dont like it that much, but a lot of Choice Scarf sets do use trick wisp with Hydro Pump and Volt switch. Needs to be slashed in or mentioned as an OO. This S6 team (#3) as an example: https://nemunemu-poke.hatenadiary.jp/entry/2020/06/01/125816
5. Team options should include incineroar, probably under grass checks.

Same deal with Ferrothorn, I think Rotom remains largely unchanged post-DLC but I'm not super comfortable giving this QC 2/2 just yet unless we're all comfortable with this as is. Not sure how worthwhile it is to adjust the bulky Rotom spreads for Cinderace since Libero HJK is a problem for it, and the given spreads account for plenty of options anyway.

Obviously update the partners a bit with some of the relevant DLC options, but I can't think of much more to add here. Conkeldurr and Durant are taking a hit this meta so probably change those for other strong wallbreakers instead (Scizor and/or Single Strike Urshifu perhaps?), otherwise I like this as is.
