VGC Salamence-M Team

I've been trying to work out a VGC-ish team built around Salamence-M, and this is the result. This team is completely untested and I keep getting this feeling that I'm missing something or it could be better. Keep in mind that I am new to VGC and such. Also, sorry for the lack of creative name.

Gus (Amoonguss) (M) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Bold Nature
- Giga Drain
- Spore
- Rage Powder
- Protect
Amoonguss is here at Lucina09's recommendation. Amoonguss takes Lucario's role as the one to redirect any potentially threatening moves, and has Spore to put threats to sleep.

Parfum (Aromatisse) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Healer
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Heal Pulse
- Wish
- Protect
Aromatisse is here to keep everyone else alive and healthy with Heal Pulse and Healer.

Miekka (Scizor) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bug Bite
- Bullet Punch
- Feint
- Swords Dance
I'm running Scizor for dealing with Fairies and with Protect, Wide Guard, Quick Guard, and anything like that with Feint.

Hades (Chandelure) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Heat Wave
- Energy Ball
- Trick
I have Chandelure here mainly for revenge-killing, but also to cripple potential threats with Trick. I'm running Heat Wave over Flamethrower/Fire Blast for the ability to hit multiple targets.

Sora (Salamence) (F) @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate -> Aerialate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dragon Pulse
- Hyper Voice
- Heat Wave
- Protect
The star of the team, Salamence. I'm running a special-based moveset for the STAB Hyper Voice, and so I can have more EVs to invest, as opposed to running a mixed set.

Oscar (Sableye) (M) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Fake Out
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
Sableye is here for Fake Out and for getting rid of items, as well as crippling physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp and stalling with Recover.

For Lucario, personally, I would say that its not a good Pokemon to make use of Follow Me as its frail and has no actual recovery move. Instead, I would use Amoonguss. I mean with Rage Powder, and Spore, and Great Defense and Sp.Def stats, it makes for a very annoying, very good support pokemon in the VGC. Despite Talonflame being its main problem, you can just switch into Chandelure to gain the boost from Fire attacks cause of Flash Flare.
Amoonguss is great bait in allowing for sweepers to sweep or set up.

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
Evs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Nature: Bold
- Giga Drain
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Protect/Sludge Bomb

Thanks for the suggestion!

Hm. . . first off is Lucario. If you decide to keep it, I'd change the item to a Focus Sash, and go for Close Combat over Drain Punch. Lucario is NOT a bulky Pokemon, and it's no use trying to make it bulky. Ammonguss is better, but it is really weak to Talonflame which it is supposed to be beating. Pachi is a good Follow Me user that causes Talon issues, but your best bet might be Togekiss. While Toge is currently not legal, it most likely will be during OR/AS. Toge can completely absorb Dragon attacks directed at Mega-Mence, and it just a good support Pokemon in general. You do have to be wary of Rock Slide if you do decide to use it, though.

Next, Aroma doesn't seem to be bringing much to the team. If you want Heal Pulse, I'd go for Clawitzer or Goth. Clawitzer's Mega Launcher allows Heal Pulse to return 75% of the target's health, but I'd really go with Goth personally. It does everything Aroma does, but it has more bulk and can be used for trapping with Shadow Tag. A good Goth set is 252 HP / 12 Def / 244 SpD with a Sassy Nature. That was the set Aaron "Cybertron" Zheng used to win Philly Regionals. The EVs let it take Modest Specs Hydreigon Dark Pulse 100% of the time. As for the moves, you could use Trick Room to give your team options (set it up and then wreck with Scizor), Tickle for more support, Heal Pulse of course, and then Psychic or Psychock as your offensive move. Goth also gets both Light Screen and Reflect, and Protect is always a viable option.

Bug Bite Scizor is currently illegal, and Scizor in general is pretty weak in the current format. Still, for OR/AS it should be better, so you should be fine. The one change I suggest there is to replace Feint with Protect, just because Feint is a very niche call and Protect is better for general use.

Chandelure also seems fine. I personally prefer Modest for the power it gives Chandy, but Timid is also good.

Mega-Salamence seems fine as well, but you need to be aware that it has Base 145 Attack and only Base 120 SpA. Does that mean that physical Mence is better? No, it doesn't. It's just something to be aware of. Also, Heat Wave Mence is currently illegal in VGC, but next format it might be legal. Finally, since you already have Chandelure you might want to use Draco Meteor instead of Heat Wave. Draco gives you instant power, and can allow you to win some 1v1s that you would otherwise lose. Still, Draco vs Heat Wave is your own choice, and they both have merit.

Finally, Sableye is an interesting choice. While priority W-o-W is indeed powerful, Sableye doesn't seem to be bringing much else to the table. Fake Out support IS always good, but Weavile would give you a faster Fake Out and a way to hit scarf Mence hard with Ice Shard. Really, scarf Mence laughs at your entire team bar Aroma (which isn't even good). Good Weavile sets are self explanitory (252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HP, Jolly). Life Orb is a good item for it, but since Scizor already has that you could use Pickpocket/Focus Sash to tank a hit and steal an opponent's item.

So, those are my suggestions, pick and chose what you want. Good luck with your team man!

Vgc 2015 isn't even out yet but

So wth is this. Seems like you're slapping protect onto singles style pokemon. First, idk what you're doing with wish on aromatisse. Aromatisse has more of a niche as a trick room setter. If you're looking for support role pokemon with heal pulse, gothitelle is the way to go, plus it has a nice ability in shadow tag.

Gothitelle @ leftovers/chesto berry

252 HP / 12 Def / 244 SpD with a Sassy Nature

-tickle

-heal pulse

-psyshock

-rest/protect

Chandelure shouldn't be using a choice item in this format, you need it to take care of mega mawile but you get wrecked by sucker punch.

Chandelure @ focus sash

252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spd

Modest nature

-heat wave/overheat

-shadow ball

-protect

-energy ball/overheat

In vgc2015 the only thing you're really hitting with energy ball is mega swampert but in a rain team it outspeeds and hits chandelure super effectively so might as well use overheat for immediate power. Also, overheat OHKO 252 HP/ 4Sdef aegislash while heat wave does not, and you run the risk of activating aegislash weakness policy, although you have a sash.

You have priority recovering for sableye, so I think sites berry is redundant, put that on Amoonguss so you get better longevity than black sludge.

Chandelure shouldn't be using a choice item in this format

Woah woah, hold the phone. Choice Chandelure is amazing. I'll admit, I prefer Choice Specs, but there's nothing wrong with his Choice Scarf Chandelure (actually, come to think of it, HP Ice is probably better than Trick, but that's not the issue here). Sure, Mawile can be a bit of an issue, but he has Heat Wave Mega-Mence. Scarf gives him the speed to turn Chandelure's base 145 SpA and good type coverage into a weapon of mass destruction. I'll admit, you need to use Choice Chandelure properly, but if it is used properly it is more than viable.

Trick shouldn't be run on it, that's sort of a gimmick in VGC, and much more viable in singles. I think I should have stated, don't run scarf+trick

Yeah, I do have to agree that Trick simply isn't worth it in VGC. While it would work occasionally, Garchomp is on about 50% of VGC teams which makes HP Ice a much better option. If you don't want to breed a HP Ice one, you could use Psychic as coverage, or just message me. I might actually be able to hook you up because I used a HP Ice Chandelure at Philly Regionals. It all depends on if I can find the time to breed another one. . .

firstly, your rmt falls short of what the rmt rules require; you need increased descriptions for each individual pokemon trying to explain why you chose them, what roles they play on the team, what the sets do, and how they work with each other

next, vgc 2015 doesn't have an officially-released format so nothing is entirely confirmed no matter how "likely" the format may seem, so currently any rmts for this would simply be speculation and isn't necessary for now

if you want to learn vgc, smogon has people who can tutor you in the battling 101 forum (but bear in mind they'll teach it with a vgc 2014 mindset until the 2015 format is announced), and you can also check out the resources over at nugget bridge too
