[SET]
Iron Defense (Garganacl) @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Iron Defense / Curse
- Body Press / Heavy Slam / Earthquake
- Salt Cure
- Recover
[SET COMMENTS]
Garganacl's great bulk and exceptional ability in Purifying Salt allow Garganacl to be a threatening bulky setup sweeper that is immune to many of the status conditions that would ordinarily impede it, while also being able to check threatening Pokemon such as Iron Moth, Aegislash and Blacephalon. Iron Defense makes Garganacl very difficult to overcome, even with super effective physical moves, while also boosting the power of Body Press, its main tool when sweeping. Curse is an alternative over Iron Defense to also boost Salt Cure's power at the cost of a lower gain in Defense, as well as allow it to beat certain Pokemon that would otherwise check it when using alternative moves over Body Press. Salt Cure is invaluable, allowing it to wear down potential checks, such as Rotom-W, Serperior, and Iron Crown, generate progress for its team, and punish Pokemon attempting to boost alongside it. Heavy Slam is an alternative option that allows Curse sets to beat Magic Guard Clefable, who is otherwise immune to Salt Cure's secondary effect and can boost up along side it with impunity to beat Garganacl. Earthquake allows it to more reliably threaten Swords Dance variants of Aegislash, which can keep up with Iron Defense sets and threaten Garganacl with Close Combat.
This Garganacl set is best suited to balance teams, which appreciate it checking Pokemon that threaten it such as Iron Moth and special variants of Aegislash, while acting as a capable win condition that can make progress for its team. Since it beats most physical attackers after a boost or two, Garganacl highly values teammates that can handle the powerful special attackers that threaten it, namely Hydrapple, Keldeo, and Serperior, so Pokemon like Celesteela, Mega Latias, and Slowking make for valuable partners. Despite its impressive bulk, Garganacl's lack of useful resistances, low speed and large number of weaknesses to common attacking types mean it often struggles to come in safely, so slow pivots such as Scizor, Slowking, and Pecharunt are important allies to get it in without jeopardising its ability to set up. Pecharunt in particular can spread Toxic via Malignant Chain, amplifying the progress Salt Cure generates, and create more setup opportunities via Parting Shot. Powerful physical attackers with super effective STAB moves, such as Buzzwole, Rillaboom, and Life Orb Mienshao can threaten Garganacl even at +2, so Garganacl appreciates partners that can deal with these threats, such as Mega Venusaur, Skarmory, and Clefable. Knock Off can eliminate Garganacl's passive recovery, so Knock Off absorbers such as Clefable and Z-Move users are good choices to have. Knock Off users on Garganacl's side, however, can remove Leftovers from opposing Pokemon that might otherwise limit Garganacl wearing the opposing team down with Salt Cure. Rillaboom's Grassy Terrain can create additional setup opportunities against Mega Aerodactyl and Toxic Hippowdon, while giving some passive healing, letting it remain slightly healthier during the sweep, while Rillaboom itself can Knock Off the opposing team for it and offer additional pivoting support via U-turn.

Defensive Stealth Rock (Garganacl) @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 32 Def / 224 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Salt Cure
- Recover
- Protect
[SET COMMENTS]
Garganacl can instead opt to be an effective Stealth Rock setter, using Salt Cure to punish common hazard control options like Rotom-W and Excadrill that would otherwise switch into it looking to deny hazards, as well as generate decent progress for its team, at the cost of its ability to be a win condition. Protect is run in order to stall for additional rounds of Salt Cure damage and gain additional Leftovers recovery, additionally letting it scout out moves that might threaten it from Pokemon like Tyranitar's Superpower and Iron Moth's Energy Ball. The 32 Defense EVs allow it to avoid being OHKOd by Choice Band Tyranitar's Superpower.
This set is best suited to balance teams looking for a reliable Stealth Rock user that checks special-attacking Aegislash sets and Iron Moth. As it is mostly reliant on Salt Cure's secondary effect to do damage, Garganacl is commonly exploited by Pokemon that either ignore or don't mind the chip damage such as Magic Guard Clefable and Regenerator users like Hydrapple and Mienshao. Therefore, Pokemon that check or exploit these threats, such as Celesteela, Iron Crown, and Iron Moth are valued support. Garganacl struggles to switch in directly to many Pokemon due to its plethora of weaknesses to common types, so pivots such as Scizor, Pecharunt, and Slowking are greatly appreciated to enable it to setup entry hazards or chip something with Salt Cure. Meanwhile, Garganacl can wear down the other team either via entry hazards or Salt Cure, giving these pivots an easier time forcing a switch to gain momentum for other teammates. Knock Off absorbers such as Z-Move users and Clefable are good picks, ensuring that Garganacl can retain its passive recovery while using Protect. Conversely, Knock Off users such as Clefable, Rillaboom, and Mienshao can support it by removing Leftovers from opposing Pokemon, which might otherwise dampen the passive damage of Salt Cure. Rillaboom in particular supports Garganacl with its Grassy Terrain, increasing its passive recovery even further and weakening Earthquakes that may otherwise threaten Garganacl, while being able to get Garganacl in via U-turn.
